Welcome to Hutt Park for our final home game of the season. Our title hopes are still alive even after our disappointing last 5 minutes against Wellington United two weeks ago which saw us steal defeat from the jaws of victory! Gutting for coaches, players and sup- porters alike but there’s character in this squad and it was a pleasing return to form—and another clean sheet that saw the team back on track and sitting in third.

A gutsy 1 nil victory against Olympic in freezing temperatures on the Wakefield turf means we are still in with a chance to win the tile– albeit a slim chance.

Today we welcome newly promoted Wainuiomata. The first round match saw a flattering 5—nil victory however Wainui have improved markedly. They’ve clawed their way back to be ninth , three points and one place higher above cellar dwellers Wests CL / reserves and it must be noted with a significantly better goal average that Wests. And bear in mind that it will only need the Capital Premier champions to beat their Central Federation equivalent and the 9th place team in Capital Premier will be safe.

No guessing who the Stop Out club would prefer to be in that 9th place spot! We have always had a lot of respect and a great relationship for our near neighbours from ‘over the hill “ and over the years there have been many players that have played for both clubs. Today is no different!

Around football circles there’s always a lot of discussion around “reserve teams” being allowed into our top leagues and the talk is always more heated when the issue of re-grades is mentioned. Player re- grades pose an ethical question of what is right and what is fair in the makeup of teams on a week to week basis. The ruling when used correctly supports the rotation of players on form and fitness, as well as allowing youth development. Sadly there are times when it is used for the survival of poor teams.

With all that said, both sides today have no concerns with re-grades. I’m sure Wainui are looking to get one back over us and move safely away from the drop zone but Besim’s boys are focused on 3 points!

3 Good luck to both sides and enjoy our Stop Out hospitality. Chris Canton, President

Round 14 vs Wellington United 2-3 loss (ASheikh RSteele)

Wellington United came to Hutt Park for this all important season defining fixture.

With captain Steve and Jamie serving suspensions we used the full depth of our squad with full confidence in securing winning result.

The first half was a bit tentative from us perhaps adjusting to a few positional changes and after a minor lapse defensively we found ourselves going in 1-0 down at half time.

We had finished the half very strongly and Sam‟s near post shot late on proved we could get in behind the Utd defence.

The second half started superbly from us by getting the ball down and passing efficiently and quickly. Great ball speed and movement allowed us to attack Utd time and time again.

We got level when Abass hit a dipping left foot shot in from the edge of the box which gave us the initiative to push on. Soon after we gained a penalty when Sam was brought down and Regan slid in a fine penalty for 2-1.

Mike then got through from a great build up but hit his shot and narrowly over the bar.

With 10 minutes to play we strug- gled to maintain our shape and uncharacteristically retreated towards our goal holding our lead.

This proved costly as with 5 minutes to play their deadly striker equalised and only 2 minutes after our misplaced free kick Utd scored a winner in the 89th minute.

A devastating blow for us in our title challenge. The team worked so hard against a hugely difficult opponent and for that I was proud.

Round 15 vs Wellington Olympic 1-0 win (SGulley)

Last weekend we travelled to Wakefield Park for our first match on the turf in 3 years last week. With the temperature a cool 2 degrees and wind chill factor in the negatives this was never an easy fixture. We started superbly though getting the ball down and creative clear cut chances. Fisem came close on 2 occasions and Steve managed to hit the inside of both posts only to have the ball come out!

Olympic proved tough opponent‟s though and it was only through some fine wing play by Brenton and Sam that we managed to open them up. Brenton crossed the ball for Steve at the far post to chip into the net aided by desperate defenders. At 1-0 up we kicked on for the second goal and near misses to James, Steve, Fisem and Brenton kept us nervous until the end. We were not to be undone and our solid defensive unit continued its fine work by keeping another clean sheet for a valuable 1-0 victory. MOM- Steve Gulley

Today we see our final home fixture for 2011. I want to thank all of the supporters who come along each week, rain or shine to support the players. I am impressed by the numbers we get week in week out and this season we have had larger numbers each week. I want to thank the President and Executive Committee for all their fine work this season. Every member has contributed greatly towards us moving forward as a club. I want to also thank all of our superb Sponsors as your contributions are so valuable to us.

As the Senior season comes to a close I hope many of you can continue your support of our next generation of players by coming along to watch our Under 19s as we embark on another journey towards the Nationals in Napier in October. Thanks for a great season you Stop Outs.

Tawa B 13 3 4 6 21 23 13 Olympic 12 2 4 6 13 25 10 But bear in mind they have a game in hand and still have two games to Seatoun 12 1 2 9 9 24 5 play against leaders University. Tip “Uni” over twice and they’re back in the mix!

But first up today it’s all about their clash with cellar dwellers Seatoun. Seatoun it has to be said, are a very good side and belie their position at the bottom of the table. All season they have lost many of their matches by the odd goal and will be more than competitive this afternoon on Hutt Park 2.

Apart from the top three teams who have watertight defences, Seatoun are in a group of 6 teams who have a respectable goals against total with on average only two goals goal conceded each game. Waikanae courtesy of our 9 nil thumping have the worst defensive record.

It would be fair to say though that goal scoring is Seatoun’s problem area with just the nine so far this season. In the first round game against Seatoun on the turf at Te Whaea, we were all tied up 1 –1 with just a few minutes to go before we snatched a late winner and the 3 points. There’s no question that today’s game will not be a cake walk!

Coaches Jase and Paul are still focused on promotion and are looking at their developing young side to keep the pressure on with another good performance. Good luck!

Women’s Promotion

KELLY CUP As we are all aware our Women’s sides have been hugely suc- cessful over the last four years. With a stream of promotions, Stop Out vs Marist the club has moved from a single team in the lowest division to Kilbirnie Park @ 1pm now one of the strongest Women’s football clubs in the Capital Football region. Sunday 31st July

With 3 teams at Stop Out here’s a snapshot of how the group has succeeded in 2011.

We have already celebrated the success of our 1st team. Promoted into Capital Premier at the end of the 2010 season we have seen them in 2011 being crowned champions in their first year at this level.

The possibility of playing in the Central League for 2012 is on the cards depending on the desire of any Central region club ready to enter a playoff series against us to earn the right to play in the Central League! It could be a long wait though as the playoff series—if it does eventuate— is planned for September 3rd & 10th!

And with that achievement of winning Capital Premier, this Sunday sees the team entered into the Kelly Cup. First up is a challenging match against top Central League side Marist.

2011 has also seen success for our other Women’s teams. Our second team promoted into Division2 at the end of the 2010 season have already gained promotion into Division 1 for 2012. With a match remaining against lowly Upper Hutt they need just a point to become Champions!

What a fantastic season and similar to Womens Div2 P W D L GF GA Pt our first team, this side is littered with Stop Out 6 5 1 0 24 11 16 talented footballing teenagers with the Wainui 6 4 1 2 22 10 13 “world at their feet”!

Lower Hutt 6 4 0 2 14 6 12 Division 1 in 2012 will of course be challenging but look out for this side to KCU 6 3 0 4 26 13 9 compete favourably against some older 6 3 0 4 14 13 S Valley 9 and more physical teams. Petone 6 3 0 8 20 22 9 We also wish Wainui Ziggy’s well and 6 1 0 9 10 41 Upper Hutt 10 3 hope they too get promoted into Island Bay 6 0 0 12 5 19 0 Division 1 for 2012.

Women Div 3 P W D L GF GA Pt And yes there’s more! Wgtn Utd 7 6 0 1 26 11 18 In 2011 the Women’s group grew to Waikanae 7 5 1 1 25 15 16 three teams. Porirua 7 3 2 2 15 8 11 Starting in the lowest division—Division Paekakariki 7 3 0 4 12 22 9 4, the team after a slow start got to grips Nth Wgtn 7 2 2 3 11 11 8 with the physicality of senior football and earned promotion after Round 1 of Stop Out 7 2 1 4 15 17 7 the season. Wests 7 2 1 4 15 21 7

Starting the second half of the season in Naenae 7 1 1 5 6 20 4 Division 3 the girls have worked hard to compete against some strong sides and have been successful in staying out of the bottom two and automatic relegation. Last weekends nil all draw against North Wellington in the mud at Alex Moore was enough to get ahead of Western Suburbs on goal difference.

Its interesting to note that Wests won Division 4 ahead of Stop Out after the first round.

What that means is Wests and Naenae are relegated to Division 4 and our mighty young side retain their spot in Division 3 for 2011.

So overall the season has been a huge success. Three teams and three promotions!

With promotions tucked away in the back of players, coaches and supporters minds, it’s now of course onto the Cup Competitions! The Cup brings on different challenges with knockout football and potential penalty shoot-outs. The pressure is off though and what’s exciting with this bunch is every game they play the 45 players are becoming better, stronger and smarter footballers!

Women’s football is alive and well at Stop Out and the club is Women’s Division 2: fully supportive of the success of this group. Stop Out vs Upper Hutt For 2012 the aim is Hutt Park 2 @ 1pm to strive for more Sunday 31 July success across the club. Life-long Stop Out fan Michael Barton shares his views on football The season ends!

Do you ever wonder about a lot these new fangled ideas? Things like the horseless carriage and the wireless. It seems to me that some of them will just never catch on. One idea I have been look- ing at and I believe just may catch on is this idea of playing foot- ball on artificial grass. Really! Artificial grass, I mean who thinks these things up?

Flippancy aside it strikes me that these pitches are going to be a huge boon for the game in the Wellington area. There is, from my dim memory, no worse feeling than getting ready all week to find out that the weather has set in and the pitches have become bogs. And we all know that there are real pressures for pitches in our playing area.

Wellington City Council reminds us, in the Wakefield Park case that “The two upgraded fields will help relieve some of that pressure. The all-weather surface means that grounds can be used for training and games for more than 60 hours a week in high demand times over the weekend and weekday evenings. In comparison, grassed sports fields are often only usable for six to 12 hours a week. Clearly at some times of the year those six to twelve hours reduce even further.

The pitches themselves are pretty clever in that they firstly involve the installation of a rubber -styled shock pad then the rolling on of the grass carpet and, yes, gluing it. The surfaces are then finished off with a layer of sand and crumbled rubber from recycled tyres. Even before that I believe, in the Wakefield Park case, something like 5000 cubic metres of topsoil had to be scraped off. Yes, there is a big commitment needed to finance, construct and run these surfaces. Given time we should see one, maybe more, down here at the Hutt Park.

The big, huge, bonus besides regular playing time is that players get to play on good con- sistent surfaces week in and week out. This means ball skills improve because, let us be hon- est, those heavy wet muddy pitches don‟t encourage them do they? The end result being play- ing standards RISE!! ,

And just before we go for the season, I found this, in Begin to Dig a health and fitness blog, for all of the couch potatoes out there. „Taken together, recreational football appears to ef- fectively stimulate musculoskeletal, metabolic and cardiovascular adaptations of im- portance for health and thereby reduces the risk of developing life-style diseases’.

Providing you don‟t get injured, of course, as that means you end up rejoining the couch. Thinking that way is, perhaps, using the negative check list in any case, so ignore that and in the words of a „rapacious‟ multi-national –Just Do It!
