The First Word My blood is red… and gold! It’s an exciting time for the Stop Out club… For the first time in our club’s history, our Women’s first team are champions of Capital Premier after an extraordinarily successful season. We have extended articles in this issue to celebrate the achievement. Fantastic result and next year? Well who knows. And our Men’s Capital Premier team have quietly moved up the table after the losing their first two games! Scoring goals wins games but with nine clean sheets already this year, Vinny and his back four are doing a fine job of halting opposing teams, but make no mistake our visitors today can score goals! Wellington United are still in the hunt for the title. As one of the pre-season league favourites “Diamonds” are sitting just in behind us in the table, and have a game in hand. Whatever the result is today it is wonderful for our supporters that we will finally see a footballing team come to Hutt Park and look to play “creatively”. Wellington Diamond United and Stop Out have had a long and proud rivalry and respect over many decades. From those early days the Dutch and European flair has shaped the style of the club and it’s no different in the way we look to play. As a young fella I still remember watching Stop Out playing Hungaria (who later merged to form WDU) at Te Whiti Park in the National League. And players like Julius Beck and Imre Kiss were legendary footballers back then. And skill… amazing! I find it puzzling that many clubs in local footballing circles play a less than open style of play—okay let’s be straight up—the long ball approach with a negative defensive focus! Why? Surely the more creative teams are the most successful teams. It’s a philosophy we have at Stop Out and that won’t change. Attractive football is more enjoyable to play, and for the diehard Stop Out supporters, McReadie, Maggs and Blair in the crowd —it’s better to watch! Enjoy our hospitality and tonight we will make a special3 presentation to salute our successful Women’s Premier team. See you at 5pm for a knees up and happy hour—and apparently shots on the bar! Chris Canton, President Besim’s match reports Round 13 vs Island Bay 2-0 win (SBlackburn SGulley) Island Bay were our visitors for this all important match in the race for the title. Island Bay started strongly and with us not settling we were caught out a few times and after some poor defending Island Bay had a penalty which Vinnie saved superbly with his feet having dived away to his left. This spurred us on and was the kick in the butt that we needed. We gained the ascendency and were well on top by winning the midfield battle. Close opportuni- ties fell to Sam and Brenton which really should‟ve been goals. Sam then gave us a deserved halftime lead when beautifully chipping the keeper when through on goal. Halftime 1-0. The second half was well controlled by us as Island Bay started chasing the game. Controlled possession allowed us to open up their defence and after Fisem was upended by their keeper Steve put home the penalty for a superb 2-0 victory. Another determined display saw us move to 2nd on the table and within reach of the league leaders. Any team fighting relegation is a difficult opponent and Wests proved no different. We started the match superbly passing the ball well and getting into good goal scoring oppor- tunities but our finishing was very poor where open goals were being squandered. Not allowing frustration to creep in we re-grouped at the half and asked for patience in the final third and composure in front of goal. The players displayed this and after a fortunate decision to play on Regan rounded their keeper to give us the lead and from there on there was only one winner. We opened their defence up at will and a fine hat-trick to Steve and good near post finish to Regan saw us round out 5-0 winners. Another 3 points away from home were gained with some quality football and keeps us chip- ping away towards the top of the table. MOM- Regan Steele As Director of Football I want to congratulate the Women‟s Premier Team on securing the title this year after their 1-0 victory last week. This is a fantastic achievement for the team and for the club. I want to personally thank the coaches and management team on this superb achievement and wish you the very best for the playoff match for promotion to Central League. I‟d encourage all club members and supporters to get behind the team for this very important match. Good luck girls. Most Saturday mornings I head off to the market at Lower Hutt Riverbank car park. Prices are good and, beyond that, it is a good place for bumping into people and having a chat. Last weekend whilst checking out the bok choy (pretty good) and the spring onions ( so so ) I bumped into a friend. He was at a loss as his match was off. “due to some overnight precipitation”. I guess that means it rained and the pitch was wet. It turned out that, to fill that void, he wanted to go and watch our first team play but they were playing Western Suburbs, on the Sunday, at Endeavour Park. This then messed his plans up. Mostly because he didn‟t want to drive over but secondly be- cause he said that he found the idea of watching a first team play a reserve team at that level (the second tier) of local football hard to watch. This wasn‟t something that I had given much thought to so much to his wife‟s bemusement we started restructuring the local game. I will try and give you a flavour of our thinking. By this stage we had got down to the stall that sells very good pears. The stall owner is not too much of a football fan and did not really contribute too much to our ideas. Fair to say, we did give him the opportunity and he did contribute this thought. He told us to remember that ad- ministrators of local sports tend to get a ten cents worth from every person and their dog, and they should be shown respect. That was us told then. To be honest I am sure we had not crossed any disrespect lines. Perhaps it was some kind of well disguised hint that we did not buy any of his reasonably priced pears. By this stage we were looking at the „ethical choice‟ sticker on some bananas and asking the question of whether that was fair and accurate to describe them that way.
