www.stopout.org.nz . The First Word My blood is red… and gold!

It’s an exciting time for the Stop Out club…

For the first time in our club’s history, our Women’s first team are champions of Capital Premier after an extraordinarily successful season. We have extended articles in this issue to celebrate the achievement. Fantastic result and next year? Well who knows.

And our Men’s Capital Premier team have quietly moved up the table after the losing their first two games! Scoring goals wins games but with nine clean sheets already this year, Vinny and his back four are doing a fine job of halting opposing teams, but make no mistake our visitors today can score goals!

Wellington United are still in the hunt for the title. As one of the pre-season league favourites “Diamonds” are sitting just in behind us in the table, and have a game in hand. Whatever the result is today it is wonderful for our supporters that we will finally see a footballing team come to Hutt Park and look to play “creatively”.

Wellington Diamond United and Stop Out have had a long and proud rivalry and respect over many decades. From those early days the Dutch and European flair has shaped the style of the club and it’s no different in the way we look to play.

As a young fella I still remember watching Stop Out playing Hungaria (who later merged to form WDU) at Te Whiti Park in the National League. And players like Julius Beck and Imre Kiss were legendary footballers back then. And skill… amazing!

I find it puzzling that many clubs in local footballing circles play a less than open style of play—okay let’s be straight up—the long ball approach with a

negative defensive focus! Why?

Surely the more creative teams are the most successful teams. It’s a philosophy we have at Stop Out and that won’t change. Attractive football is more enjoyable to play, and for the diehard Stop Out supporters, McReadie, Maggs and Blair in the crowd —it’s better to watch!

Enjoy our hospitality and tonight we will make a special3 presentation to salute our successful Women’s Premier team. See you at 5pm for a knees up and happy hour—and apparently shots on the bar! Chris Canton, President

Besim’s match reports

Round 13 vs Island Bay 2-0 win (SBlackburn SGulley)

Island Bay were our visitors for this all important match in the race for the title. Island Bay started strongly and with us not settling we were caught out a few times and after some poor defending Island Bay had a penalty which Vinnie saved superbly with his feet having dived away to his left.

This spurred us on and was the kick in the butt that we needed. We gained the ascendency and were well on top by winning the midfield battle. Close opportuni- ties fell to Sam and Brenton which really should‟ve been goals. Sam then gave us a deserved halftime lead when beautifully chipping the keeper when through on goal. Halftime 1-0.

The second half was well controlled by us as Island Bay started chasing the game. Controlled possession allowed us to open up their defence and after Fisem was upended by their keeper Steve put home the penalty for a superb 2-0 victory.

Another determined display saw us move to 2nd on the table and within reach of the league leaders.

Round 14 vs Western Suburbs 5-0 win (RSteele 2 SGulley3)

Always a tricky fixture at this stage of the season is the one where any team travels to Endeav- our Park to play Western Suburbs. Any team fighting relegation is a difficult opponent and Wests proved no different.

We started the match superbly passing the ball well and getting into good goal scoring oppor- tunities but our finishing was very poor where open goals were being squandered.

Not allowing frustration to creep in we re-grouped at the half and asked for patience in the final third and composure in front of goal.

The players displayed this and after a fortunate decision to play on Regan rounded their keeper to give us the lead and from there on there was only one winner.

We opened their defence up at will and a fine hat-trick to Steve and good near post finish to Regan saw us round out 5-0 winners.

Another 3 points away from home were gained with some quality football and keeps us chip- ping away towards the top of the table. MOM- Regan Steele

As Director of Football I want to congratulate the Women‟s Premier Team on securing the title this year after their 1-0 victory last week.

This is a fantastic achievement for the team and for the club. I want to personally thank the coaches and management team on this superb achievement and wish you the very best for the playoff match for promotion to Central League.

I‟d encourage all club members and supporters to get behind the team for this very important match. Good luck girls. Besim

Dairy Flat’s opinion

Life-long Stop Out fan Michael Barton shares his views on football

Market thinking.

Most Saturday mornings I head off to the market at Riverbank car park. Prices are good and, beyond that, it is a good place for bumping into people and having a chat.

Last weekend whilst checking out the bok choy (pretty good) and the spring onions ( so so ) I bumped into a friend. He was at a loss as his match was off. “due to some overnight precipitation”. I guess that means it rained and the pitch was wet. It turned out that, to fill that void, he wanted to go and watch our first team play but they were playing Western Suburbs, on the Sunday, at Endeavour Park.

This then messed his plans up. Mostly because he didn‟t want to drive over but secondly be- cause he said that he found the idea of watching a first team play a reserve team at that level (the second tier) of local football hard to watch. This wasn‟t something that I had given much thought to so much to his wife‟s bemusement we started restructuring the local game. I will try and give you a flavour of our thinking.

By this stage we had got down to the stall that sells very good pears. The stall owner is not too much of a football fan and did not really contribute too much to our ideas. Fair to say, we did give him the opportunity and he did contribute this thought. He told us to remember that ad- ministrators of local sports tend to get a ten cents worth from every person and their dog, and they should be shown respect. That was us told then. To be honest I am sure we had not crossed any disrespect lines. Perhaps it was some kind of well disguised hint that we did not buy any of his reasonably priced pears.

By this stage we were looking at the „ethical choice‟ sticker on some bananas and asking the question of whether that was fair and accurate to describe them that way. Anyway our plan, which you can see was part of a wide ranging discussion (in the sense we walked and talked most of the market), was to make the top four tiers of local football strictly first team only. Se- cond teams could play up to the fifth tier only from that point they could no longer be consid- ered for promotion.

Just for clarity, the top four tiers would include Cen- tral League. Our thinking being, that if you really wanted first team football you would have to go and seek it out.

Homes of Distinction The idea being that first team football in Football Registered Certified Builder Central Premier League has got to be better than of new homes, alterations and additions. second team football in the same league. Do you get that? I didn‟t at first but my friend said, while buy- 021 781 691 ing6 chillis, that “if you look deep down it is all about the spirit of football” and further “it’s about inner status”. It was about here that I remember I wanted some radishes...

NME Electrical - 10 Supporters of Stop Out Women 2011 Premier League Waikanae v Stop Out Rnd 13 - 10 July, Jim Cooke Park 1-0 win: Gabby R The JC is in pretty good nick, we have 3 officials for the game & there's a decent breeze coming from the coast & whipping down the pitch. The team talk is about playing our football, on the deck will negate any impact from the wind & OK somewhere in there there's a little note about the maths at the top of the table for those without an abacus. Despite a limited warm up in our away strip we do settle well from the word go - the training session on crosses taken on board it seems - down the left with a couple of early attacks and within in a few minutes Gabby has the ball in the net when the defence misjudge their clearance under pressure from Tara.

Over the 1/2 hour the contest is ripe - Waikanae keen for the contest and it's a good game of football, once or twice they fashion chances - but they can't convert. Our back four with keeper Kath playing well grow in confidence. Always a pleasure to see Soph', Kathryn, Cathy, Dan' & Kels' looking to play the ball out - and they couldn't do it without the support of 2008 Original Steph B Steph' & Phoebe who are both having bright games on the flanks of the midfield. The engine room is purring now, 'Tash playing with great energy and the work in tandem with Mel' Mac is a pleasure to watch. We have a number of corners through the half - and again lessons of the past few weeks are taken on board even if the score does remain unchanged into half time. A good crowd has gathered, great to have so many Reds supporters make the trip up SH1 - though we're in Yellow, Russ catches himself shouting the wrong colour. At the break we talk about closing down their shooters, knowing that 30 - 40 yards will be considered in range for some with a strong shot - and there's encouragement to support each other, up the talk, up the noise and hustle and harry them for "just" 45 more minutes.

The second half is in most part a repeat of the first, Mel' O back in the mix & she covers acres of space making sure Waikanae have no free ride up the pitch - Gabby torments as always up the right, and there's a handful of half chances we can't quite finish - a couple shot wide, a couple shot high and their defence is well organised.

Waikanae do try and sneak a 12th player on the field - but since it has four legs and a collar the ref' stops that lark after a couple of minutes of light humour. Humour or not I'm still biting nails, crossing fingers and where's my "nerve soothing" chewing gum? Into the last 15 minutes - and as much as we know a draw should suffice to wrap up the title we don't want to have to sweat it out - we get a little rub of the green that maybe was missing last week, a cracking shot of theirs hits the bar and their influential defender sadly limps off.

That's not to say we clung on by any means - we're good for a series of corners in the last few minutes & there's some comfort knowing every minute down at the right end of the pitch is one minute closer to full time. And then it's all over - our win brings about all manner of celebrations on and off the pitch, I could swear I heard fireworks go off - & our gracious opponents congratulate us on our season.

The next few hours are spent in a silly grin funk - texts flying up & down the country - and we savour the hospitality of Waikanae. We're the last out the door for the crawl home down the coast road. Hard to separate Scorer of the winner! players - on such an occasion, but special mention for the superb play of 'Tash (3pts) as11 the skilled accomplice of Mel' in the midfield, Soph' (2 Gabriella Ranford pts) great in her cover but also her distribution from the back - while Gabby collects 1pt for another 90 minutes as the smiling assassin!

The team’s last loss in league competitions was on Sophie Burley 12 46 May 9th 2010, over 1 year ago. Steph Bremner 12 53

Steph McMillan 2 39 Since 2009 the Premier team has been undefeated at Hutt Park. The last lost was on June 28th 2009, over13 Tara Connell 12 27 2 years ago.

The oppositions view point Let’s review the match from Waikanae’s perspective. Waikanae Women‟s football team saw their hopes of winning the Premier Division blown away in Sunday‟s windswept match at Jim Cooke Park. Facing undefeated division leader Stop Out, Waikanae Women succumbed to an eighth minute goal mouth scramble to lose 1-0. Waikanae started the match strongly, pressing forward and forcing Stop Out into conceding an early free kick. Stop Out pushed back and had a couple of chances that were dealt with easily by goalkeeper Sasha Haskell. An attacking throw- in lead to the Stop Out goal which had a hint of being kicked out of Haskell‟s hands.

Waikanae were probably the better team for the rest of the half with strong runs by Raven McCall, Sophie Abbott and Bonnie Laws and good work in midfield from Sam Reading. It was end to end football for much of the game with neither team being able to penetrate to the net.

Substitute Ngaire Dolman, Danielle Thorne having scored a goal in the earlier Division Three match, Tara Connell came on to the right wing to- wards the end of the half in a player of the day performance but not even the confidence of the youngster could break Stop Out‟s defence.

The second half saw Waikanae playing with the wind but unable to capitalise as Stop Out‟s physical attitude saw them prefer to concede numerous free kicks. Dolman, McCall and Reading all saw shots go wide while Hunt had a thundering long shot smack off the crossbar. Super boot!

It’s a stat to die for. 16 year old Nicola Bowden has scored 40 senior goals this season! This now brings her tally to 82 goals in 51 games for the club.

A superstar in the making Nicola isn’t cruising in the lower leagues of Women’s Divisions—far from it.

In 2011 she has scored 6 goals in 6 appearances for14 the “Prems”. She’ll be a goodie when she grows up!

The Div 2 girls hit the road to Stokes Vegas for a must win match to keep in front on the points table The sun was shining but the field was muddy and the wind was blowing a gale down the pitch We played into the wind in the first half and started with no reserves( luckily Nicola arrived back from holiday 10 mins in)

We started slow again and conceded a quick goal Then we built our momentum based around speed of play and skill These young girls really can put on a show when things come together I just love watching it Our defense soaked up the pressure Dan/ Rachel/ Jess/ Amelia and last minute keeper Georgia worked really hard with the help of a gutsy midfield to keep S/V at bay.

1 nil down we started to attack our midfield of Courtnee/ Amalia/ Emma and Bri flicked the switch on to attack and supported Alysa and Katreena up front as we dominated play scoring 3 goals. 2 powerfully struck shots from Amalia and great goal from Kat.

Half time score 3 to 2 The second half we switched into 4 3 3 Nicola/ Alysa and Kat up front peppered the goal all half and we were unlucky not the get another 3/4

But midway through the half Nic scored to secure the game a great second half by all the players who actually did what the coach asked. Well done girls 3 points clear at top of the table.

PoD Emma 3 pts worked hard all game.
