Also, a special welcome to Douglas Villa and Stokes Valley competing in the masters tournament here today. Our Men’s First Team had a great 3-1 win against Stop Out two weeks ago but then a loss to Olympic. We are still in the relegation zone, but a win today would make us safe – or, if other results go our way we will also be secure – and can then start planning for next year in the Central League. COYB! All other leagues have finished so here is a quick summary of league placings. It was a busy schedule for our fabulous Junior Committee and Mark Allen, with separate presentations for each grade. Some very happy kids and their families celebrated a great season and now look forward to next year. With the start of the English Premier League we can now all relax, enjoy and dream of glory for our favourite team, before reality kicks in for many of us! Thank you to all our wonderful supporters and sponsors and our brilliant volunteers of which there are too many to call out individually. You all make our club so brilliant – THANK YOU! Hope to see you all at senior prize giving on October 17 at 7pm, and before that at our final game of the season against Lower Hutt on October 10. The Powerex Petone W-League Team managed to get 20 points during the season, which is almost three times the amount achieved last year. A few key injuries and a little bit of bad luck prevented the team from achieving a higher place in the league. The work done by the players and coaching staff show that the team continues to improve. Unfortunately, the season ended with a loss to Wairarapa in the Kelly Cup semifinals. It was a game in which we showed to be the superior footballing side, but with luck not on our side, we conceded an unfortunate goal with ten minutes left. I am extremely proud of our team and the way they played the game, their determination and grit. Even with everything not going our way the team fought until the final whistle. The Premier League Squad started the season with almost a brand new team from the previous year when they were playing in Division 1. It took them some time to blend together and find balance, but they managed to get five wins and ended up mid-table. The first year of Petone’s U18 Girls’ programme was a success with the team winning eight games. They also held the second-best defensive record. Over the year we saw them improve as individuals and as a team, winning their last three games. Overall it was an excellent season for the women’s programme and we would like to thank everyone who made this season happen, from the Petone executive to the sponsors that allow us to take the field. Kevin Torres Women’s First Team coach U17s Report ur U17 Talent Development Programme (TDP) Team managed to finish Otheir season on a high, winning 4-2 in the plate semifinal against Miramar in a battle of fifth versus eighth in the U17 Capital Development League. Unfortunately, the plate final against Western Suburbs Red was cancelled due to the horrendous weather last Sunday, so our chance at winning some silverware disappeared. Finishing with a win was an apt conclusion to our season, as the team’s improvement week on week finally produced a tangible result. We hadn’t won a game all season till that point, so Shea Stapleton and I were ecstatic for the group that their hard work paid off in the end. Our team managed to put up impressive periods or halves of football against some very talented teams, but while often falling short at the end. Although results often didn’t go our way, the growth of the players over the course of the season was evident and their application to training sessions and gamedays never wavered. Shea and I were very proud to have eight registered U17 players involved in the Men’s Reserve Team squad for large parts of the season. It demonstrates the quality of young players that we have coming through the system and proves that the U17 programme is doing its job in acting as a pathway for our young players to progress into senior football. We have a large, young core of the squad who are still eligible for the U17 programme next season and we have some talented players coming through from the U15s. Shea and I are both looking forward to working with this group again and building on the improvements made this year. It’s been a month since we played at Hutt Park. A tough away encounter at Wests, a Chatham Cup game in the polar wind tunnel at Wakefield Park against Island Bay and then another night game in freezing conditions against Lower Hutt at Fraser. Well it’s nice to be home and playing during the daytime — on grass! Season two back in Central League has seen an improved start to the campaign. In fact our last home defeat was close to a year ago on the 13th June 2015 against you guessed it — Napier City Rovers. This season has seen a host of yellows and reds being handed out—something like 8 reds in all games we’ve been involved in already! And that seems to be consistent with our Central and Capital Premier colleagues with a host of games being impacted in this way.

MATCH DAY PROGRAM 19th August 2017 Photo courtesy of AT Photo UPPER HUTT CITY VS WELLINGTON UNITED MAIDSTONE PARK - KO 1:00 PM A message from Gibby . We’ve managed 3 games in 11 days which has been a tough ask for this end of the season, but what an 11 days! First up we had PNM in the Knockout Cup Quarter Final. Leading up to this game we’d won a game apiece, and drawn 1-1 so it was always going to be a tight game. These games are always tough physical battles and this was no exception. Both teams were throwing everything they had into it, which was reflected in the half time score of 0-0. The second 45 was just as tough as the first, and we managed to get on the score sheet when PNM gave the ball away in their defensive third and Lena de Ronde capitalised by driving a cross into the 6 yard box and Emma Main nipped in front of her defender to tuck the ball away. 1-0. PNM are the sort of team that never gives up, and they struck back after a ball over the top was picked up by their striker and they slotted the ball into the far post tying the game up 1-1. Cup matches need a result, and so into extra time we went. Both teams were showing the effects of a long hard tussle, but through sheer grit and determination we pushed forward, and sent a cross into the box for Lena de Ronde to pop up at the far post driving the ball into the net to take us 2-1 up.

Welcome to Hutt Park. Another week off last weekend for our first team squad with our scheduled opposition Olympic playing in the Chatham Cup. It really does need some serious consideration from New Zealand Football with the impact on the league campaigns of those teams who are no longer in the Chatham Cup - which is of course the majority of teams around footballing circles! Last outing against Tawa was an unusual situation after a hard fought match and a good point. It was curious because it felt flat for many supporters as the result whilst admirable seemed insignificant; seeing we are already safely ensconced in the middle of the Central League pack after a tremendous start to the season. Over the last 3 or 4 years in Capital Premier we’ve always been near the top with our push for promotion back into Central League so every game seemed to have something riding on the result.

A quick recap of the last two weekends – our Liquid IT Men’s First Team had a loss and a draw and now sit mid-table, Reserves two good wins, Third Team two losses and Fourth Team two wins and sit nicely on top of the Wellington 3 table. Our Powerex Women’s First Team had two wins and sit near the top of the W-League, Reserves two losses and U18 Team a win and a loss, so this development team is going really well. Our closed-shop teams had a mix of results over the two weeks. But from the vibe in the clubrooms, they are all loving being out playing football again. With a full round of games for all of our teams except masters this week due to the school holidays, we have an exciting weekend ahead of us. The main game today is our Liquid IT Petone Men’s First Team against Waterside Karori – both teams needing points to rise up the league table. The curtain raiser is Petone Reserves versus Waterside Karori Third Team – so hopefully a lot of support for both teams here today. And continuing the theme, next weekend (July 18) our Powerex Women’s First Team also host Waterside Karori.

Still at the club from that day and in the first team mix are Jason Tipping, Brandon Tai, Matt Clarke, Damon Fussell and Alistair Yates. Plus the goal scorers that day Steven Gulley and Martin Packer who should be out on the park today which reinforces our club ethos of player loyalty. Nice to see but sadly not common around local footballing circles. Whilst some things remain constant quite a lot has changed since that day. The obvious one is that we’re now back in Central League and sitting comfortably in 5th place.

Well that was then and a season on we finally got the job done and have returned to Central League after our playoff series victory against Wanganui Athletic. It’s been a satisfactory start in Central League with 2 wins, 6 points and the side sitting in 5th spot. Two-and-a-half months later Wthan normal, but great to have a full season ahead of us playing through to October. The last few months have been crazy and I do hope everyone has kept active and well during this period. I also hope our Men’s and Women’s First Team squads have kept up their fitness, which they all worked so hard on up to lockdown – we’ll see how they hold up in the next few weeks :-) The club has assembled a great Men’s squad again who will be tested in the Central League this year and, as always, our ambition is to do well backing up our glorious promotion success last year. We welcome back old and new players to our squad as well as our new First Team coach Charlie Howe and his assistant Kieran Cripps. Our Women’s W-League Team has been strengthened with some new players enhancing our solid base from last year. We have strong ambition to also do well in the W-League and with coach Kevin Torres we are excited about the year ahead. We have had a good start, last week beating Wellington United 1-0 in the quarterfinal of the Kelly Cup – a good sign of things to come. Our Women’s Reserve Team has also strengthened this year to compete in the Capital Premier League with coach Roger Torres.

A great win for our Men’s Firsts against Wainui a couple of weeks back, getting some valuable points as we enter the second half of the season. Our Men’s Reserve Team had a valuable win last weekend against Kapiti Coast United showing that they can get back on track and pick up a lot more points in round two, after completing round one today against top-of-the-table Stop Out. Our Powerex Petone Women’s Firsts got another point against Victoria University a couple of weeks back, but got knocked out of the Kate Sheppard Cup on penalties last week. Currently in the middle of the table, some points today against the top team in the W-League are much sought after, following a very close loss away in the first round. Our very young Women’s Reserve Team continues to gain experience every week while striving for a solid second round in Capital Premier. As we are halfway through the season for most teams, here is a snapshot of where everyone is sitting: Men’s Thirds (Cap 3) – top by eight points (seven wins and one draw) Stonecutters (Cap 4) – sixth after seven games Argh Me Knees (Masters 1) – first-equal (six wins and one loss) Left Over Stews (Masters 4) – top by six points (eight wins out of eight) Mighty Masters (Masters 5) – seventh Dreamers (Master Over 45s) – eighth Women’s U18 – third TDP Under 17 – sixth 3 4 TDP Under 15 – seventh TDP Under 13 – fourth The Dave Agent Memorial Darts Night is on tonight and a big thank you to Greg Revell for organising.
