NINETY-FOURTH ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT MAY 8TH TWO THOUSAND TWENTY-ONE HISTORY OF CHESTNUT HILL COLLEGE Located at the northwestern edge of on 75 acres overlooking the , Chestnut Hill College opened in 1924 as a Catholic, four-year, liberal arts college for women. Founded as Mount Saint Joseph College by the Sisters of Saint Joseph, the College was renamed in 1938 as Chestnut Hill College. Since its inception, the College has offered a rigorous liberal arts education that provides students with a broad background in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The goal of Chestnut Hill College has been to prepare students for life’s challenges by helping them to grow intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, and socially. In keeping with the spirit of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, the curriculum has been modified over time to meet the ever- changing needs of higher education and society. The College originally awarded only the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees to young women of traditional college age. In 1972, a Continuing Education department extended opportunities for undergraduate study to mature women and men. With the addition of a coeducational graduate program in 1980, the College began to offer master’s degrees and, in 1997, added its first doctoral program. Today, students may earn master’s degrees in six disciplines and a doctorate in clinical psychology. Academic changes also included expansion beyond the physical limits of the campus. As a member of SEPCHE (Southeastern Consortium for Higher Education), Chestnut Hill pursues a collaborative approach to higher education with seven other local institutions. Through membership in the ACSSJ (Association of Colleges of Sisters of St. Joseph) Chestnut Hill is able to offer its students opportunities to enrich their educational experiences by studying at seven other colleges in the . Study-abroad programs further extend the reach of a Chestnut Hill education and help prepare students for life in a global society. November 2001 proved to be an historic time for Chestnut Hill College. The announcement that men would be admitted to the traditional-age, full-time undergraduate program in fall 2003 marked the end of the 78-year-old College for Women. In choosing to pursue this new direction, the College makes a tradition of excellence and a history of success available to a wider audience. On August 2, 2006, College President Carol Jean Vale, SSJ, Ph.D. announced one of the most transformational moments in the College’s history, the acquisition of the SugarLoaf estate from the Albert M. Greenfield Foundation. The purchase of SugarLoaf Hill offered the College a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to nearly double the size of its campus and allow for expansion to accommodate a growing student body. The existing structures at SugarLoaf have all been renovated and are currently being used as classroom space, lodging for undergraduate students and for conferences and social events. In the long-term, the property will be expanded to include additional residential and academic buildings in accordance with the College’s Master Plan. In August 2007, College President Carol Jean Vale, SSJ, Ph.D., announced the College’s reclassification from NCAA Division III to NCAA Division II and full membership in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). Chestnut Hill College, a member of the NCAA Division III since 1996, has enjoyed unprecedented success in its athletics program since going coed in 2003. The Chestnut Hill campus provides an atmosphere conducive to teaching, learning, and reflection for the entire college community. The decades of expansion in academic programs were matched by corresponding growth and change in the campus, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For many years the main buildings were St. Joseph Hall, with its six-story Greco-Roman rotunda and French Gothic exterior, Fournier Hall, a jewel of Italian Romanesque architecture, and Clement Hall, with its classrooms and swimming pool. The additions of Logue Library, Fontbonne Hall, and Barbara D’Iorio Martino Hall meet the needs of a growing college community. In the fall of 2006, Mary Jackson Fitzsimmons ’35 Hall opened as a residence hall to help alleviate a housing shortage on the campus. In 2012, the Jack and Rosemary Murphy Gulati ’61 Complex was dedicated. This renovated Clement Hall space now includes a state-of-the-art fitness center, a sleek entrance pavilion and the inviting Michael and Margaret Carney McCaffery ’77 Lounge (formerly the Social Room). Each new structure was carefully designed to preserve the architectural integrity of the campus while addressing specific educational or student life needs. The last decade has seen an emphasis on providing the technology that is essential to today’s students. Renovated science facilities and computer laboratories helped to create a teaching/learning environment appropriate for the 21st century. Martino Hall includes “smart” classrooms and seminar rooms that are part of the campus- wide network. Visitors to the grounds have long enjoyed the grotto with its charming fountain, the House of Loretto, and the elegant main chapel that was inspired by Sainte Chapelle in Paris. More than 11,000 individuals have earned degrees from Chestnut Hill College since 1924. The list of accomplished graduates includes numerous representatives in medicine, law, research, education, business and social service workers. Alumni are also well known for their commitment to volunteerism in countless civic, cultural, educational, and religious organizations. Their spirit continues to animate the campus through the generous support of and dedication to their alma mater that they loyally demonstrate. Faithful to its rich history, Chestnut Hill College will continue to meet the challenges of a changing society while maintaining its commitment to values-oriented education and its Catholic heritage. Future graduates of the College will continue to be people who use their education to transform the world as they join their predecessors in dedicating themselves to the College motto of Fides, Caritas, Scientia. Being a pioneer often comes with the responsibility of paving the way for others. Dr. Irene W. Gaskins, founder of the Benchmark School, has been a pioneer par excellence. Not only is she the founder of the illustrious Benchmark School where she devised an innovative approach to help struggling readers, but she led the way for all teachers to recognize that children with learning differences could, in fact, become successful readers and writers. Her dedication to reading instruction gave hope, often for the first time, to generations of children and their families. In the 1960s, Irene worked as a research assistant at the Reading Clinic at the University of Pennsylvania while she was working on her doctorate. She tracked the characteristics of struggling readers in Penn’s study on dyslexia, leading her to become intrigued as to why some children have difficulty learning how to read despite their high intelligence. As a result of her research, Irene founded the Benchmark School in Media, Pennsylvania, in 1970. She was truly a woman ahead of her time. As Irene continued to refine her approach to research-based, reading instruction, Benchmark School continued to grow and flourish. Under her guidance, the results of the effectiveness of various reading strategies, instructional approaches, and innovative programs have been published in various journals such as, The Reading Teacher, Reading Research Quarterly, Journal of Reading Behavior, Language Arts, Elementary School Journal, Remedial and Special Education, and Journal of Learning Disabilities. The impressive, ground-breaking work being done at Benchmark School did not go unnoticed by those in the field of Education. Under Irene’s leadership, Benchmark School was recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a School of Excellence in 1986. Irene has been the recipient of many prestigious awards including the William S. Gray Citation of Merit for Lifetime Achievement from the International Reading Association, Distinguished Educator by The Reading Teacher journal, and the Janet L. Hoops Award from the Pennsylvania branch of the International Dyslexia Association. She was also cited by the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education as one of the “Twelve Women Pioneers” in its history. To day, it is with great esteem that we recognize the illustrious career of Dr. Irene Gaskins − a pioneer who transformed the future of education and who paved the way for countless children to become independent readers and confident leaders − by conferring upon her the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from Chestnut Hill College.

6 NYDIA HAN, B.S. Nydia Han is 6ABC’s Consumer Investigative Reporter and co-anchor of Action News Sunday mornings. She is dedicated to exposing scams, protecting consumers, and encouraging businesses to do the right thing. She teaches us by her good works to use our voices to create change. An Emmy award-winning journalist, Nydia is also the creator of the documentary series, #ThisIsAmerica, a provocative look at who we are as Americans. As the world turned in 2020, America found itself in the midst of an unprecedented global pandemic and, sadly, unprovoked backlash against the Asian American community. In response, Nydia moderated a panel of community leaders that resulted in a call to action to stop hate. With her documentary series, #ThisIsAmerica, Nydia hopes to inspire us to celebrate our differences. To pause on self-righteousness to consider what else might be learned about another. To get to know each other’s unique American stories, check our own biases, and be brave enough to stand for humanity. Amanda Gorman, the youngest inaugural poet in U. S. history, asks of us, in her notable poem, The Hill We Climb, not just to see the light in what feels like ever-ending shade, but to be the light. I believe that Nydia Han is that light. Prior to joining Actions News in 2002, Nydia worked as a TV news reporter for KTRK-TV, the ABC station in Houston, Texas, and KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City. She started her career as a reporter at KIFI-TV in Pocatello, Idaho, after earning a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. Always ready to speak up where it counts, Nydia is dedicated to helping our communities in a myriad of ways. She is a mom of two, a wife and volunteers her time for causes she is passionate about such as raising funds for lung cancer research, after the passing of her mother. She also serves on the Asian American Women’s Coalition Advisory Board and mentors aspiring journalists. A friend of the College, Nydia participated in the College’s Cultural Awareness Series in 2019, offering insights to our students from her TEDx talk on ways to bridge our divide in our communities and in our world. To day, we stand in unity with Nydia Han and acknowledge with great admiration her light and works by conferring upon her the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from Chestnut Hill College.

7 REV. JAMES J. MARTIN, SJ, M.A., M.DIV. “Hold Hope High” is a call and commitment often heard at Chestnut Hill College. Reverend JamesJ. Martin, SJ, embodies this imperative in so many distinctive ways, among them, his genuine spirit of humor, humility and courage. It is indeed an honor to offer even a glimpse of how Father Martin counters these difficult times with encouraging and inspiring doses of faith and wisdom. Born and raised in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, Father Martin attended Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School before earning his undergraduate degree from the prestigious Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Well-prepared for a successful life in corporate America, Father Martin began his career working in for General Electric. After six years of seeking to make a life as well as a living, he found the courage to admit that the business world was not where he would discover and become his true self. It was at this time that his spiritual journey began in earnest and guided him down a different path leading to his entering the in 1988. As a Jesuit he studied philosophy at Loyola University Chicago, earned master’s degrees in divinity and theology from Boston College and was ordained to the priesthood in 1999. Father Martin is an award-winning author, an internationally renowned speaker and columnist, and editor- at-large of the Jesuit magazine, America. In addition to his work at America, he has written or edited more than 20 books, all of which reference his personal experiences and life journey with Jesus, as he encourages his readers to find God by finding themselves, and to find themselves in finding God. This firm conviction that God desires a personal encounter and relationship with each of us grounds his newest book, Learning to Pray: A Guide for Everyone. As a faithful Jesuit and follower of Ignatius, Father Martin is adept at finding God in all things and bringing God into every place he goes, even virtually. After an initial hesitation to become involved in the world of social media, Father Martin came to see it as a form of ministry, saying, “It’s reaching people where they are. Jesus went to where the people were and spoke to them in their language. And he was always going to the margins.” Today, Father Martin has a strong social media presence, with close to a million followers on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, where he often does live sessions, offering readings and book discussions and/or scripture reflections and shares his own Catholic perspective on the day’s events. Father Martin is widely seen as a progressive voice on Catholic issues, including the Church’s inclusion of LGBTQ persons. One of his recent books, Building a Bridge: How the and the LGBT Community Can Enter into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion, and Sensitivity, has been endorsed by cardinals, bishops and church leaders including Cardinals Joseph Tobin of Newark, , Wilton Gregory of Washington, DC and Blaise Cupich of Chicago, who in appreciation of all Father Martin is doing wrote: “He really is one of, if not the foremost evangelizer in the Church today, especially for young people.” In the midst of so much opposition from far-right Catholics, Father Martin’s desire to build bridges of relationship, rather than walls of division, to go to the margins with Jesus to welcome all to the table, is one of the most compelling signs of the hope he holds high for all of us in our fractured world and church today. Is it any wonder that Pope Francis appointed Father Martin as a consultant to the Vatican’s Secretariat for Communications in 2017. Today, it is with great admiration that we recognize the Reverend James J. Martin, SJ for his untiring commitment to hold hope unwaveringly high as an author, communicator, minister of the gospel and prophetic witness of our true, human identity as unique reflections of the Divine, by conferring upon him the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from Chestnut Hill College.
