THE VIENNA PROJECT: JEWISH COMMUNITIES OF LEOPOLDSTADT AND ALSERGRUND Site 1A: Introduction to Jewish Life in Leopoldstadt Leopoldstadt, 1020 The history of Jews in Austria is one of repeated exile (der Vertreibene) and return. In 1624, after years and years of being forbidden from living in Vienna, Emperor Ferdinand III decided that Jewish people could return to Vienna but would only be allowed to live in one area outside of central Vienna. That area was called “Unterer Werd” and later became the district of Leopoldstadt. In 1783, Joseph II’s “Toleranzpatent” eased a lot of the restrictions that kept Jews from holding certain jobs or owning homes in areas outside of Leopoldstadt. As a result, life in Vienna became much more open and pleasant for Jewish people, and many more Jewish immigrants began moving to Vienna. Leopoldstadt remained the cultural center of Jewish life, and was nicknamed “Mazzeinsel” after the traditional Jewish matzo bread. Jews made up 40% of the people living in the 2nd district, and about 29% of the city’s Jewish population lived there. A lot of Jewish businesses were located in Leopoldstadt, as well as many of the city’s synagogues and temples. Tens of thousands of Galician Jewish refugees from Eastern Europe made their home there, and brought many of their traditions (such as Yiddish literature) with them. Questions to Consider Look up the history of Jewish eXile and return in Vienna. How many times were they sent away from the city, and why did the city let them return? What were some of the restrictions on Jewish life in Vienna before the “Toleranzpatent” in 1783? What further rights did Jewish people gain in 1860? How did this affect Jewish life and culture in Vienna in the late 1800s and early 1900s? Describe the culture of Leopoldstadt before 1938. -

The German democrat and champion for freedom, one of the most well-known members of the Frankfurt National Assembly, thus died on a heap of sand in Brigittenau, a Viennese suburb. The bullets ended the life of a man who had fought tirelessly for a Germany unified in justice and in freedom – as a political publicist, publisher and founder of the Schillerverein in Leipzig, as a parliamentarian in the Paulskirche in Frankfurt, and finally with a gun in his hand on the barricades in Vienna. To the very last, Robert Blum fought for a German nation-state in the republican mould, legitimised by parliamentary structures. He campaigned for a brand of democracy in which civil liberties and human rights were accorded to one and all. And he fought for a Europe in which free peoples should live together in peace, from France to Poland and to Hungary. His death on 9 November 1848 marked one of the many turning points in our history. By executing the parliamentarian Robert Blum, the princes and military commanders of the Ancien Régime demonstrated their power and sent an unequivocal message to the Paulskirche National Assembly. -

In 250 wines, 33 grape musts and 45 musts in fermentation, no limit values were exceeded, but in some cases high levels (>0.100 mg/L) of single residues were found, meaning that a reduction of these levels before bottling could make sense. In the course of this study, a white and a red wine were spiked with a mix of 23 pesticide residues from the group of fungicides (including botryticides), herbicides and insecticides. The influence of the following treatments on residue concentrations and volatile profiles were investigated: two activated charcoal products, a bentonite clay, two commercial mixed fining agents made of bentonite and charcoal, two yeast cell wall products, and a plant fiber-based novel filter additive. The results of this study show that all the agents tested reduced both residues and volatile compounds in wine, with activated charcoal having the strongest effect and bentonite the Citation: Philipp, C.; Eder, P.; weakest. Sie wurzelte in den Freiheitskriegen, stand unter dem Einfluß von Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, Ernst Moritz Arndt und Johann Gottlieb Fichte, war geprägt durch eine idealistische Volkstumslehre, christliche Erweckung und patriotische Freiheitsliebe. Diese antinapoleonische Nationalbewegung deutscher Studenten war politische Jugendbewegung und die erste gesamtnationale Organisation des deutschen Bürgertums überhaupt, die 1817 mit dem Wartburgfest die erste gesamtdeutsche Feier ausrichtete und mit rund 3.000 Mitgliedern 1818/19 etwa ein Drittel der Studentenschaft des Deutschen Bundes umfaßte.2 Die zur nationalen Militanz neigende Burschenschaft, zu einem Gutteil hervorgegangen aus dem Lützowschen Freikorps, setzte ihr nationales Engagement in neue soziale Lebensformen um, die das Studentenleben von Grund auf reformierten. Dr. Kurt Finger, der mich auf einen Text von Ludo Moritz Hartmann mit dem Titel „Demokratie und Volksbildung“ (1921) aufmerksam machte. Die darin angesprochene Verbindung von demokratischen Implikationen für die Erwachsenenbildung in ihren Anfängen um die Jahrhundertwende vom 19. zum 20. Jahrhundert weckte mein Interesse, und veranlasste mich, mich auf eine pädagogische Spurensuche und -sicherung zu begeben. Die Relevanz dieses historischen Themas ankerte in der Frage, ob und inwieweit die Hartmannsche Bildungsidee für die gegenwärtige Erwachsenbildung einerseits ein Korrektiv darstellen könne und andererseits das Potenzial innehat, diese neu zu inspirieren. Ich bedanke mich bei Mag. Dr. Kurt Finger für die anregenden und inspirierenden Diskussionen sowie die ausgezeichnete, geduldige Betreuung. Besonderer Dank gilt Herrn Direktor Mag. Christian H. Stifter und seinen Mitarbeiter vom Österreichischen Volkshochschularchiv in Wien für die hervorragende und hilfreiche Unterstützung bei der Recherche für die vorliegende Arbeit.
