It seems that the designation, to distinguish the movement from the activity of the Chovevei Zion, was first used by Matthias Acher (Birnbaum) in his paper “Selbstemancipation,” 1886 (see “Ost und West,” 1902, p. 576: Ahad ha – ‘Am, “Al Parashat Derakim,” p. 93, Berlin, 1903). Biblical Basis The idea of a return of the Jews to Palestine has its roots in many passages of Holy Writ. It is an integral part of the doctrine that deals with the Messianic time, as is seen in the constantly recurring expression, “shub shebut” or heshib shebut,” used both of Israel and of Judah (Jer. xxx, 7,1; Ezek. Xxxix. 24; Lam. Ii. 14; Hos. Vi. 11; Joel iv. 1 et al.). Main 2008 Dateiabruf unter: www.burschenschaft.de Dateiabruf unter: www.burschenschaft.de Der Student im Garten* von Harald Lönnecker 1924 veröffentlichte die Deutsche Studentenschaft, der öffentlich-rechtliche Zusammenschluß der Allgemeinen Studentenausschüsse in Deutschland, Österreich, Danzig und dem Sudetenland, im Göttinger Deutschen Hochschul-Verlag ein 194 Seiten umfassendes Buch mit dem Titel: „Rosanders, des lieblich floetenden Schaeffers und klirrend Gassatim gehenden Purschen Studentengartlein, worinnen derselbe manichmahl mit seinen Confratibus und Liebsten mit sonderer Ergezzlichkeit sich erlustiret, spazziret und maniche sueß-dufftende Bluhme sich abgebrochen“.1 „Gassatim gehen“ oder „gassatieren“ bedeutete in der Studentensprache seit dem ausgehenden 17., beginnenden 18. Jahrhundert, sich lärmend, musizierend und singend nachts auf den Gassen und Straßen herumzutreiben. Dies geschah in der Regel „klirrend“ von Sporen und Raufdegen, der gern lautstark und herausfordernd als „Gassenhauer“ an Steinen und Häuserecken gewetzt wurde. „Pursch[e]“ oder „Bursch[e]“ war die gängige Bezeichnung für den Studenten, „Burschenschaft“ hieß nicht mehr als „Studentenschaft“. Erst nach 1815 bezeichnet das Wort einen bestimmten Korporationstypus.2 Das „Studentengartlein“ lehnt sich an Johannes Jeeps (1581/82-1644) erstmals 1605 bzw. 1613 erschienenes „Studentengärtlein“ an, ein Studentenliederbuch, entstanden an der Nürnberger Hochschule zu Altdorf und ihren Studenten gewidmet, das eine Tradition der einfachen Strophen- und Melodiegestaltung für das säkulare Studentenlied begründete und für rund zweihundert Jahre wegweisend und stilbildend für den studentischen Gesang wurde.3 * Zuerst in: Eva-Maria Stolberg (Hg.), Auf der Suche nach Eden. Edited by Günter Bischof, Anton Pelinka, Erika Thurner, New Brunswick 1998 (Contemporary Austrian Studies, volume 6), 164–173. In his admirable article, Tony Judt has succeeded in portraying the essential characteristics of postwar Austrian politics, including the main problems of the country’s domestic and foreign affairs. He has also dealt with the status and function of Jörg Haider’s FPÖ, and attempted to place all these dimensions of Austrian political life in a European framework. While finding no fault with Judt’s narrative or analysis, we consider it worthwhile to illuminate some key aspects of the development, structure, and politics of Haider’s FPÖ. This is a democratic necessity, as Haider is adept at camouflaging his hidden agenda by dressing up his policies in democratic Austrian garb, thus deceiving not a few politicians and scholars at home and abroad. In the following pages, we attempt to show Haider’s movement in its true colors, revealing the specifically Aus- trian contours of this “Ghost of the New Europe.” 1986: The Shift Towards Racism and Right-Wing Extremism The Innsbruck party congress of the FPÖ in September 1986 must be seen as a milestone in Austrian domestic politics. The change in the leadership of the FPÖ signaled a marked shift of that party to the extreme right, led to the termination of the SPÖ-FPÖ coalition government, and affected the ensuing general election, which produced a socialist-conservative administration of the SPÖ and ÖVP. -

Carroll ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT CHRISTINA CARROLL: Cultural Memory and National Representation: The Franco- Prussian War in French and German Literature, 1871-1900 (under the direction of Lloyd Kramer) This thesis examines the memory of the Franco-Prussian War in nineteenth-century French and German literature from a transnational and comparative perspective. It focuses on how four writers – Alphonse Daudet, Émile Zola, Theodor Fontane, and Detlev von Liliencron – used representations of the war to construct visions of their respective nations, which they defined against the enemy “other” and delineated in political, social, gendered, and racial terms. As it makes clear, although these authors directed their texts at a national audience, many of their works crossed the border – so even as the writers posited themselves against each other, they remained in dialogue. The thesis also incorporates reviewers’ responses to these writers’ representations, and considers the scope of their popular appeal. It contends that this ongoing, contested, and transnational process of negotiation between writers, reviewers, and readers helped shape the memory of the war and understandings of nation in nineteenth-century France and Germany. -

Read the speech online: www.bundespraesident.de Page 1 of 6 Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the inauguration of the Robert-Blum-Saal with artworks depicting Germany’s history of democracy at Schloss Bellevue on 9 November 2020 According to legend, the last words of Robert Blum were “I die for freedom, may my country remember me.” He was executed – shot – by imperial military forces on 9 November 1848, one day before his 41st birthday. The German democrat and champion for freedom, one of the most well-known members of the Frankfurt National Assembly, thus died on a heap of sand in Brigittenau, a Viennese suburb. The bullets ended the life of a man who had fought tirelessly for a Germany unified in justice and in freedom – as a political publicist, publisher and founder of the Schillerverein in Leipzig, as a parliamentarian in the Paulskirche in Frankfurt, and finally with a gun in his hand on the barricades in Vienna. To the very last, Robert Blum fought for a German nation-state in the republican mould, legitimised by parliamentary structures. He campaigned for a brand of democracy in which civil liberties and human rights were accorded to one and all. And he fought for a Europe in which free peoples should live together in peace, from France to Poland and to Hungary. His death on 9 November 1848 marked one of the many turning points in our history. By executing the parliamentarian Robert Blum, the princes and military commanders of the Ancien Régime demonstrated their power and sent an unequivocal message to the Paulskirche National Assembly. -

‚Lebenslange Gemeinschaft statt anonyme Massen- universität‘ – mit solchen Worten werben studenti- sche Verbindungen (auch Korporationen genannt) unter den Erstsemestern um Neumitglieder. Was nach Ersatzfamilie klingt, wird vor allem mit Traditionen und angeblich „zeitlosen Werten“ begründet. Zu diesen gehören bunte Mützen und Bänder, Degen und Wappen, rituelle Abendveranstaltungen und jahrhun- dertealte Lieder sowie eine Sprache, die für Außen- stehende kaum zu enträtseln ist. Die meisten dieser Verbindungen sind reine Männerbünde. Kritiker:innen werfen ihnen häufig eine elitäre und frauenfeindliche Haltung, nicht selten sogar explizit extrem rechte Einstellungen vor. Der StuRa der TU Dresden hat sich der Aufgabe gewidmet, Fakten von Klischees zu tren- nen und das deutsche Verbindungswesen allgemein wie auch vor Ort genauer unter die Lupe genommen. Band 2 schaut sich die Dresdner Situation an: Welche Verbindungen gibt es hier, wie sind sie untereinander vernetzt und wie positionieren sie sich öffentlich? Citizen and Burgher D Staatsbürger and Stadtbürger Whenever the German concept of citizenship is under study, the authors do not fail to hint to the etymological particularity that the German language lacks a term which manifests the roots of the concept in the city: etymologically the terms citizen, citoyen, cittadino and ciudades evidently point to some kind of belonging to the city. In the German language the analogous term is Staatsbürger. Kant, for instance, made it clear that when he spoke of the Bürger, he meant the "citoyen, d.i. Staatsbürger, nicht Stadtbürger, bourgeois". Equally Wieland, to whom the first usage of the German term Staatsbürger is frequently attributed, at least three different expressions: Staatsbürgerschaft, Staatsangehörigkeit, and Volksangehörigkeit express different elements of a status which, at least in the anglo-american tradition, is covered by the single word citizenship. If the political and juridical language uses certain distinctions it is safe to assume that they reflect significant material differences. The German triad Staatsbürgerschaft, Staatsangehörigkeit, and Volksangehörigkeit invokes the concepts of the 'state' and of the 'people' (Staat and Volk) and combines them with the term 'belonging' (Zugehörigkeit, Angehörigkeit), thus suggesting an affiliation of passive inclusion between the individual and the society rather than of active participation. Hence, when the German concept of citizenship is under scrutiny one should keep in mind that certain aspects of citizenship which are incorporated in a single concept in other countries may be disjoined in the German case and associated with separate terms and perhaps even different conceptions. -

BOWLING FOR FASCISM: SOCIAL CAPITAL AND THE RISE OF THE NAZI PARTY* Shanker Satyanath Nico Voigtländer Hans-Joachim Voth NYU UCLA and NBER University of Zurich and CEPR First version: June 2013 This version: January 2014 Abstract: Social capital is often associated with desirable political and economic outcomes. This paper contributes to a growing literature on its "dark side". We examine the role of social capital in the downfall of democracy in interwar Germany. We analyze Nazi Party entry in a cross-section of cities, and show that dense networks of civic associations such as bowling clubs, choirs, and animal breeders went hand-in-hand with a rapid rise of the Nazi Party. Towns with one standard deviation higher association density saw at least one-third faster entry. All types of associations – veteran associations and non-military clubs, “bridging” and “bonding” associations – positively predict NS Party entry. Party membership, in turn, predicts electoral success. These results suggest that social capital aided the rise of the Nazi movement that ultimately destroyed Germany’s first democracy. We also show that the effects of social capital were more important in the starting phase of the Nazi movement, and in towns less sympathetic to its message.
