Every bend has its own name, most of them named for one of the foremen that led the construction gangs that built the road. The bends and curves bear witness to the skill of the constructors, built up on the base rock of the steep mountainsides, or hewn by hand into the mountain itself. The road is narrow with a gradient of 9 %, but passing pockets have been incorporated and traffic normally flows without problem. The longest permitted length of vehicles is 13.1 metres. Trollstigen is both fascinating and a test of the nerves, and if you don’t have a good head for heights perhaps you should let someone else drive. The road, which is closed during the winter months, is currently visited by in the region of 600 000 travellers and tourists between June and October/November, making it one the most popular tourist venues in Norway. The road at its a highest point is 852 masl, and lies on the municipal boundary between Rauma and Norddal. From the north, Trollstigen is the gateway to Destination Geirangerfjord –Trollstigen’s geographic area. The road is usually opened at the turn of the month May/June and closes when the snows arrive, usually at the turn of the month October/November. Trollstigen, with its characteristic waterfall, Stigfossen, is encircled by mighty mountains, reaching an impressive 1600 masl. To the west you can see Mount Bispen (1462 masl), Kongen (1614 masl) and Dronninga (1544 masl). To the east the rocky Stigbottshornet (1583 masl) and Storgrovfjellet (1629 masl). The old pack road has been restored and is favourite and exciting footpath for those who wish to experience Trollstigen on foot.

The road swings through 11 hairpin bends up from the Geirangerfjord and to the highest point on the stretch, 620 metres above sea level at Korsmyra. The road was officially opened on 15th September 1955 and gave the village of Geiranger year-round road access.
The road was an attraction from the very first day, and was called Eagle Road because at its highest point it passed through terrain that had traditionally been the domain of a large number of eagles.
The name also reflects the wildness, the spectacular that tourists and others using the road will experience, especially if they stop at Ørnesvingen, the highest of the hairpins. Facilities have been provided here for visitors to take in the magnificent panorama over Geiranger, the Geirangerfjord, the Seven Sisters Falls and the alpine farm Knivsflå, or to gaze down on the many cruise ships that traffic the fjord far below.
The viewpoint has been recently upgraded, and was officially opened on 21st June 2006 with a simple ceremony as part of the project “Nasjonal Turistveg” (National Tourist Roads) under the auspices of Statens Vegvesen, - The Norwegian Public Roads Administration.
Ørnevegen has a one in ten incline at its steepest, and can test both drivers and vehicles that traffic the road in the winter months. Private and commercial vehicle branch interests use the road as a test bed to improve the road-holding capabilities of vehicles in winter conditions. The longest vehicle length permitted is 15 metres.

From here, the mountain of Dalsnibba can be approached via a minor road. The road descends through a series of hairpin turns northwards towards the village of Geiranger, offering views of the Geirangerfjord in the process. From Geiranger, the road ascends the mountainside through another series of hairpin turns; this section of road is known as the Ørnevegen ("Eagle Road") and reaches a height of 620 metres (2,030 ft) above sea level.[3]
