Geirangerfjord Is Under Constant Threat of Erosion Into the Fjord from Åkerneset The fjord is one of Norway’s most visited tourist sites. This fjord is surrounded by some of the steepest moun- tains on the entire west coast. It is very narrow and has no habitable shore area. Foaming waterfalls plunge into the fjord from jagged peaks. The two most notable waterfalls in the Geiranger Fjord are Seven Sisters Falls and the Suitor. Both falls face one another across the fjord, and the Suitor is said to be trying to woo the sisters opposite. GeirangerFjord is under constant threat of erosion into the fjord from Åkerneset. Draft Concept Paper: World Heritage Site Manager Workshop, Denmark 21 24 April 2009 Enhancing Our Heritage Toolkit The Heritage Agency of Denmark has generously decided to host a workshop on the Enhancing Our Heritage Toolkit (EoH). Representatives from all the Nordic sites are invited to attend. Nordic World Heritage Foundation will in cooperation with the Danish authorities organize this workshop in April 2009. The workshop is a result of the recommendations from the Periodic Reporting process. 1. Background and objectives The European Periodic Report was submitted to the World Heritage Committee at its 30th meeting in Vilnius 2006. The Nordic Baltic sub-regional report, annexed to the regional report, identifies a number of challenges for the implementation of the World Heritage Convention in the sub-region. Periodic Reporting is widely recognised as an important tool to strengthen and maintain the integrity and credibility of the World Heritage concept. The Periodic Reporting process has so far been successful in developing international cooperation and in providing an account of the status of World Heritage sites. This workshop follows the recommendations from the meeting between the Nordic and Baltic States Parties in 2007 (see Annex I Recommendations from the meeting on Periodic Reporting, Helsinki 3-4 May 2007 no: 6, 7 & 12). The World Heritage Committee will examine the Periodic Reporting follow-up activities for the European region at its 34th session in 2010. The Enhancing Our Heritage Toolkit contains twelve practical tools. Although it has been developed with a focus on natural properties, the initiative also has potential value as a tool to assist site managers of cultural properties.

Last updated: 04.03.2021 This is a “Travel like the locals” tour. The tours use public transport, i.e. regular buses, ferries and boats, but we have done the planning for you so that you can concentrate on enjoying your trip. You travel on your own - there is no guide or tour leader. On most of our tours you must change several times between different buses/ferries/boats, and it is up to you to make sure you catch your connections – truly travelling like a local! (The tours are set up so that the buses, ferries and boats connect.) Round trip Stryn - UNESCO Geirangerfjord Stryn – Hellesylt – Geiranger – Hellesylt - Stryn On this trip you can explore the charming village of Hellesylt, experience a wonderful ferry cruise on the Geirangerfjord and have a wander around Geiranger. You start in Stryn, and after about 20 minutes the bus drives past Hornindalsvatnet lake. This lake is known for being the deepest in Northern Europe (514m), and since “the old days” stories has been told about what creatures exist in the depth. Maybe you get lucky and will see a sea monster when you drive past? When you arrive at Hellesylt, you have some time to look around. Between the bus stop and the ferry harbour you find the Hellesyltfossen waterfall. This is a mighty waterfall and is one of the most photographed sites in the area. It’s an impressive sight early in the summer when all the snow melts. At Hellesylt you also find the Per Gynt Galleri. The main purpose of the gallery is to present the enormous wooden reliefs by artist and woodcarver Oddvin Parr (1933 - 2010).

  • West Norwegian Fjords – Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord Norway
WEST NORWEGIAN FJORDS – GEIRANGERFJORD AND NÆRØYFJORD NORWAY The starkly dramatic Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord are classic examples of the upper sections of two of the world’s longest and deepest fjords. They are pristine well-developed examples of an active glacial landscape. Their sheer rock walls, hung with waterfalls and old transhumant farms rise 1,400m directly from sea level to a quite different landscape of glaciated mountains. COUNTRY Norway NAME West Norwegian Fjords – Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord NATURAL WORLD HERITAGE SERIAL SITE 2005: Inscribed on the World Heritage List under Natural Criteria vii and viii. STATEMENT OF OUTSTANDING UNIVERSAL VALUE [pending] The UNESCO World Heritage Committee issued the following statement at the time of inscription: Justification for Inscription Criterion (viii): The West Norwegian Fjords are classic, superbly developed fjords, considered as the type locality for fjord landscapes in the world. They are comparable in scale and quality to other existing fjords on the World Heritage List and are distinguished by the climate and geological setting. The property displays a full range of the inner segments of two of the world’s longest and deepest fjords. Criterion (vii): The Nærøyfjord and Geirangerfjord areas are considered to be among the most scenically outstanding fjord areas on the planet. Their outstanding natural beauty is derived from their narrow and steep-sided crystalline rock walls that rise up to 1400m direct from the Norwegian Sea and extend 500m low sea level. Along the sheer walls of the fjords are numerous waterfalls while free-flowing rivers rise up through deciduous and coniferous forest to glacial lakes, glaciers and rugged mountains.
