Tymczasem w krajach zachodniej Eu- ropy – w Niemczech, Francji, Wielkiej Brytanii, Holandii – rozkwitały ju ż coraz intensywniej naukowe zainteresowania skie- rowane poza jej granice, a przeczucia uczonych, i ż Europejczy- ków z odległ ą Persj ą czy Indiami ł ączy wi ęcej, ni ż mo żna by podejrzewa ć, znajdowały coraz cz ęś ciej naukowe podstawy wraz z rozwojem nowo żytnych dyscyplin badawczych, w tym nade wszystko j ęzykoznawstwa porównawczego i historycznego. Bezsprzecznie na gruncie polskim za pioniera naukowych bada ń nad Indiami uzna ć nale ży autora prezentowanej tu pracy, Walentego Majewskiego herbu Skorochód. Urodzony w 1764 r. na Podlasiu w rodzinie drobnoszlacheckiej, od najmłodszych lat „bystrym obdarzony umysłem” 4 i przejawiaj ący szczególne za- interesowanie j ęzykami obcymi, uko ńczył w 1785 r. – mimo perturbacji osobistych i dziejowych – warszawskie kolegium pijarów, w którym podj ął zaraz potem prac ę nauczyciela, porzu- caj ąc jednocze śnie my śl o dalszym kształceniu uniwersyteckim. Na stanowisku tym pozostał, jak sam pisze, przez „jeszcze par ę lat dla wydoskonalenia si ę w j ęzykach francuzkim i niemieckim, tudzie ż dla czerpania ze źródeł na miejscu łatwiejszych wy ż- szych nauk” 5 i sam doka ńczał własn ą edukacj ę, w czym nieoce- nion ą pomoc stanowiła dla ń „[ł]atwo ść dostania dzieł potrzeb- nych z zamo żnego ksi ęgozbioru tego ż Zgromadzenia i Bibliote- ki publicznej Załuskich, a nawet od wielu […] Dobroczy ńców” 6. Dla Majewskiego, uczonego pasjonata, mo żliwo ść korzy- stania ze źródeł wiedzy stanowiła taki sam życiowy imperatyw, co obowi ązek zarabiania i utrzymania rodziny. Kiedy wi ęc w 1797 r. otrzymał posad ę najpierw tłumacza, a nast ępnie sekre- tarza w tzw. komisji trzech dworów, „długi Najja śniejszego 4 A. Metryki Królestwa Pol- skiego) – mógł zacz ąć w pełni realizowa ć swe zainteresowania, jednocze śnie przyczyniaj ąc si ę wydatnie do rozwoju polskiej archiwistyki 8. Uczestniczył te ż czynnie w pracach Towarzystwa Warszawskiego Przyjaciół Nauk, na którego forach od 1809 r. wygłaszał odczyty – pocz ątkowo po świ ęcone archiwistyce, pó ź- niej za ś tak że jego najwi ększej naukowej pasji, jak ą stało si ę zgł ębianie dziejów słowia ńszczyzny oraz wykazanie zale żno ści pomi ędzy światem słowia ńskim a indyjskim 9. To wła śnie na jednym z posiedze ń Towarzystwa 3 czerwca 1830 r. miał Majewski okazj ę spotka ć si ę z Alexandrem von Humboldtem, z którego bratem Wilhelmem, wybitnym niemiec- kim j ęzykoznawc ą, pozostawał wcze śniej w kontakcie listowym. X | Agnieszka Kuczkiewicz-Fraś wynika z niego jasno nie tylko wielkie naukowe zaanga żowanie polskiego badacza, ale i fakt, i ż podejmowane przez niego wy- siłki stawiaj ą go w równym rz ędzie z innymi ówczesnymi uczo- nymi europejskimi: Równie go [Majewskiego] zajmowały postrze żenia brata [tj. Wil- helma von Humboldta] o samskrycie – o liczbie dualnej u Sło- wian przez uczonych zabaczonej, ale przez lud dot ąd u żywanej – wreszcie o dziele w samskrycie z król. pruskiego ksi ęgozbioru wydanem wspomniał. Erudycya naraz przez Majewskiego w roz- mowie z Humboldem [sic ] rozwini ęta uderzyła uczonego pisarza, odrzekł mu więc: że brat jego (minister) filologii si ę oddaje; że i jego samskryt równo z wielu dzisiejszymi badaczami pruskimi zajmuje, że Bopp profesor j ęzyka samskryckiego wiele cieka- wych pism w tym przedmiocie wydał, że jego „Nalus” 10 po raz ju ż trzeci z druku wychodzi, w którem dziele przy ko ńcu składni samskrytu ma zamiar niemało ułamków mowy tej staro żytnej umie ści ć, lecz że nam zbywa na słowniku dokładnym owego dya- lektu, obok trudno ści w wymawianiu i czytaniu; na co Majewski odrzekł: i ż dawne swe materyały do Gramatyki Samskrytu wła- śnie według Boppa poprawia, a dzieła przeze ń wspomniane w cz ę- ści mu s ą znane. Wspomniał te ż o swojej drukarni samskryckiej, któr ą podług wzorów gramatyki Kuraja 11 w Serampurze, bada ń azyatyckich i propagandy de fra. Paulino 12 , za u życiem mniej biegłych krajowych artystów przed laty 20 zacz ętą, wzorami ber- li ńskiemi pó źniej uzupełni ć si ę starał, a co do Dziewa-Nagary 13 berli ńskiej, to ta wcale odpowiedzi ą nie jest. Instances of the confusion can be found in the writings of distinguished Orientalists such as William Jones and also of a number of other Europeans now less well known and less highly regarded.

  • The Absent Vedas
    The Absent Vedas Will SWEETMAN University of Otago The Vedas were first described by a European author in a text dating from the 1580s, which was subsequently copied by other authors and appeared in transla- tion in most of the major European languages in the course of the seventeenth century. It was not, however, until the 1730s that copies of the Vedas were first obtained by Europeans, even though Jesuit missionaries had been collecting Indi- an religious texts since the 1540s. I argue that the delay owes as much to the rela- tive absence of the Vedas in India—and hence to the greater practical significance for missionaries of other genres of religious literature—as to reluctance on the part of Brahmin scholars to transmit their texts to Europeans. By the early eighteenth century, a strange dichotomy was apparent in European views of the Vedas. In Europe, on the one hand, the best-informed scholars believed the Vedas to be the most ancient and authoritative of Indian religious texts and to preserve a monotheistic but secret doctrine, quite at odds with the popular worship of multiple deities. The Brahmins kept the Vedas, and kept them from those outside their caste, especially foreigners. One or more of the Vedas was said to be lost—perhaps precisely the one that contained the most sublime ideas of divinity. By the 1720s scholars in Europe had begun calling for the Vedas to be translated so that this secret doctrine could be revealed, and from the royal library in Paris a search for the texts of the Vedas was launched.

    SAALG / SEALG – Paris, 3 rd July 2015 Missionaries, Travelers, and Scholars: the Building of an Indian Manuscripts Collection in the National Library of France Jérôme Petit (BnF) It seems to me that there are two points of view when we make the history of a collection. The first one is a look back on the different entries that constitute de collection: gifts, acquisitions, givers, owners, sellers, geographical provenances. It is certainly the more common way to build efficiently the history of a collection. The second one is to make the history of the catalogues available in the history: who were able to catalogue Indian manuscripts, to whom such a catalogue should be published, etc., are important questions for us, librarians, archivists, gathered together for this symposium. If you allow me to do so, I would like to make the history of the Indian manuscripts collection at the National Library of France through these two points of view. The National Library keeps one thousand eight hundred seventy eight manuscripts in the “Sanscrit” collection and one thousand sixty four manuscripts in the “Indien” collection. Through the term “Indien”, taken as a language or a group of languages, we find manuscripts in Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Punjabi, Hindoustani, etc., that had been gathered under a single collection at the beginning of the twentieth century. I hope to make clear this point during my presentation as I will talk about catalogues and their implications. The heart of the collection beat for the first time at the beginning of the eighteenth century, in the years seventeen thirties, when the Abbey Jean-Paul Bignon, librarian of the King Louis 1 SAALG / SEALG – Paris, 3 rd July 2015 the fifteen, asked Etienne Fourmont, the figure of the orientalist at that time, to form a collection of Chinese and Indian books.

For the provincial literati, emphasizing Bihar as an “organic” entity cultivated a sense of common belonging that was remarkably novel for the period, particularly because it implied that an administrative region had transformed into a cohesive cultural unit. The transformation is particularly revealing because the claims to a “natural” Bihar was not based upon a distinctive language, ethnicity or religion. Instead this regional assertion was partially instigated by British colonial politics and in part shaped by an emergent Indian national imagination. The emergence of a place-based Bihari identity therefore can only be explained by situating it in the context of 19th century colonial politics and nationalist sentiments.

Reconstructing such debate among Company officials and critics from the 1770s to the 1830s, the study makes several further interventions. It argues against what has been perhaps the dominant narrative about Company and British-imperial ideology in this period, a narrative of reorientation from “Orientalist” to “Anglicist” cultural attitudes. It shows instead how the Company shifted from a commercial idiom of sovereignty, concerned with conciliating elites through scholarly patronage, to a territorial idiom, concerned with cultivating popular affection through state-sponsored education.
