A colleague and I had spent some pleasant moments with the local custodian of an archaeological site. Finally the Sicilian’s curiosity prompted him to inquire of me “Are you Chinese?” Frank M. Snowden, Blacks in Antiquity (1970) The ancient confusion between Ethiopia and India persists into the late European Enlightenment. Instances of the confusion can be found in the writings of distinguished Orientalists such as William Jones and also of a number of other Europeans now less well known and less highly regarded. -

SIRKIN SHORTLY AFTER THE DEATH OF JAMES MILL) HORACE HAYMAN Wilson brought out a new edition of Mill's History of British India, In which he footnoted what he thought to be Mill's errors. Review ing these events in a recent survey of nineteenth-century Indian historians, Professor C. H. Philips comments: It is incredible that he should not have chosen to write a new history altogether, but possibly his training as a Sanskritist, which had accustomed him to the method of interpreting a text in this way, had something to do with his choice.' But why? Professor Philips might as well have asked why he did not write his own books on Hindoo law and on Muslim law instead of bringing out a new edition of Macnaghten; or why he did not collect his own proverbs, instead of editing the Hindoostanee and Persian proverbs of Captain Roebuck and Dr. Hunter; or why he did not write his own book on travels in the Himalayas, instead of editing Moorcroft's; or why he did not write his own book on Sankhya philosophy, instead of editing H. T. Colebrooke's : or why he hid not write his own book 011 archaeology in Afghanistan, instead of using Masson's materials.. To suggest Mr. Wilson might have written his OWll History of British India is to suggest that' he was a scholar and that he was interested in the subject. As to the latter, he never wrote again on the subject. As to the former, his education had not prepared him for it, Educated (as the Dictionary of National Biography reports) "in Soho Square," he then .apprenticed himself in a London .hos pital and proceeded to Calcutta as a surgeon for the East India Company. -

Reviewed by Leonid Kulikov (Universiteit Gent) The present volume contains more than fifty letters written by two great scholars active in the first decades of western Indology, the German philologist and linguist August Wilhelm von Schlegel (1767–1789) and the British Indologist Henry Thomas Colebrooke (1765–1837). It can be considered, in a sense, as a sequel (or, rather, as an epistolary appendix) to the monograph dedicated to H. T. Colebrooke that was published by the editors one year before (Rocher & Rocher 2012). The value of this epistolary heritage left by the two great scholars for the his- tory of humanities is made clear by the editors, who explain in their Introduction (p. 1): The ways in which these two men, dissimilar in personal circumstances and pro- fessions, temperament and education, as well as in focus and goals, consulted with one another illuminate the conditions and challenges that presided over the founding of western Indology as a scholarly discipline and as a part of a program of education. The book opens with a short Preface that delineates the aim of this publica- tion and provides necessary information about the archival sources. An extensive Introduction (1–21) offers short biographies of the two scholars, focusing, in particular, on the rise of their interest in classical Indian studies. The authors show that, quite amazingly, in spite of their very different biographical and educational backgrounds (Colebrooke never attended school and universi- ty in Europe, learning Sanskrit from traditional Indian scholars, while Schlegel obtained classical university education), both of them shared an inexhaustible interest in classical India, which arose, for both of them, due to quite fortuitous circumstances. -

History Of The Mackenzies Alexander Mackenzie THE HISTORY OF THE MACKENZIES. ORIGIN. THE CLAN MACKENZIE at one time formed one of the most powerful families in the Highlands. It is still one of the most numerous and influential, and justly claims a very ancient descent. But there has always been a difference of opinion regarding its original progenitor. It has long been maintained and generally accepted that the Mackenzies are descended from an Irishman named Colin or Cailean Fitzgerald, who is alleged but not proved to have been descended from a certain Otho, who accompanied William the Conqueror to England, fought with that warrior at the battle of Hastings, and was by him created Baron and Castellan of Windsor for his services on that occasion. THE REPUTED FITZGERALD DESCENT. According to the supporters of the Fitzgerald-Irish origin of the clan, Otho had a son Fitz-Otho, who is on record as his father's successor as Castellan of Windsor in 1078. Fitz-Otho is said to have had three sons. Gerald, the eldest, under the name of Fitz- Walter, is said to have married, in 1112, Nesta, daughter of a Prince of South Wales, by whom he also had three sons. Fitz-Walter's eldest son, Maurice, succeeded his father, and accompanied Richard Strongbow to Ireland in 1170. He was afterwards created Baron of Wicklow and Naas Offelim of the territory of the Macleans for distinguished services rendered in the subjugation of that country, by Henry II., who on his return to England in 1172 left Maurice in the joint Government. -

The Mackenzie Collection Exhibition at Lews Castle Museum and Archive
The Mackenzie Collection exhibition at Lews Castle Museum and Archive: 19th August 2017 will see the mounting and opening in Stornoway at the Lews Castle Museum and Archive (the town of Colin Mackenzie’s birth) the first ever exclusively Mackenzie Collection exhibition. Curated from items on loan from the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Library, the exhibition will mark the first occasion material from the collection has been displayed outside of London. Bringing to our local audience and visitors an exhibition of material from a rich and renowned collection of South Asian arts, which, quite astonishingly, is firmly part of the history and heritage of the Outer Hebrides. Given the significance of the Mackenzie collection we also anticipate drawing a wide national and international audience to this exhibition. Indeed, the exhibition will be a momentous occasion for this 200 year old collection. Signature Music Composition and Audio-Visual, Multi-Instrumental Performance exploring the connections and heritage of Gaelic Psalms from the Isle of Lewis and Indian Raags, Tabla and Sitar from South Asia: Yatra, meaning journey. This will involve commissioning a contemporary, multi- instrumental score charting the journey of Colin Mackenzie from the Hebrides to India. The work will tell the story of Mackenzie through music and audio-visual imagery. The product will be a multi- instrumental piece combining the Gaelic traditions and Indian classical music traditions. The score will be accompanied by visual imagery which will take the audience on a journey from Stornoway across seas into India then charting a visual and musical experience through the culture and traditions of India as viewed and documented by this man from the isle of Lewis. -
The Absent Vedas
The Absent Vedas Will SWEETMAN University of Otago The Vedas were first described by a European author in a text dating from the 1580s, which was subsequently copied by other authors and appeared in transla- tion in most of the major European languages in the course of the seventeenth century. It was not, however, until the 1730s that copies of the Vedas were first obtained by Europeans, even though Jesuit missionaries had been collecting Indi- an religious texts since the 1540s. I argue that the delay owes as much to the rela- tive absence of the Vedas in India—and hence to the greater practical significance for missionaries of other genres of religious literature—as to reluctance on the part of Brahmin scholars to transmit their texts to Europeans. By the early eighteenth century, a strange dichotomy was apparent in European views of the Vedas. In Europe, on the one hand, the best-informed scholars believed the Vedas to be the most ancient and authoritative of Indian religious texts and to preserve a monotheistic but secret doctrine, quite at odds with the popular worship of multiple deities. The Brahmins kept the Vedas, and kept them from those outside their caste, especially foreigners. One or more of the Vedas was said to be lost—perhaps precisely the one that contained the most sublime ideas of divinity. By the 1720s scholars in Europe had begun calling for the Vedas to be translated so that this secret doctrine could be revealed, and from the royal library in Paris a search for the texts of the Vedas was launched. -

SAALG / SEALG – Paris, 3 rd July 2015 Missionaries, Travelers, and Scholars: the Building of an Indian Manuscripts Collection in the National Library of France Jérôme Petit (BnF) It seems to me that there are two points of view when we make the history of a collection. The first one is a look back on the different entries that constitute de collection: gifts, acquisitions, givers, owners, sellers, geographical provenances. It is certainly the more common way to build efficiently the history of a collection. The second one is to make the history of the catalogues available in the history: who were able to catalogue Indian manuscripts, to whom such a catalogue should be published, etc., are important questions for us, librarians, archivists, gathered together for this symposium. If you allow me to do so, I would like to make the history of the Indian manuscripts collection at the National Library of France through these two points of view. The National Library keeps one thousand eight hundred seventy eight manuscripts in the “Sanscrit” collection and one thousand sixty four manuscripts in the “Indien” collection. Through the term “Indien”, taken as a language or a group of languages, we find manuscripts in Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Punjabi, Hindoustani, etc., that had been gathered under a single collection at the beginning of the twentieth century. I hope to make clear this point during my presentation as I will talk about catalogues and their implications. The heart of the collection beat for the first time at the beginning of the eighteenth century, in the years seventeen thirties, when the Abbey Jean-Paul Bignon, librarian of the King Louis 1 SAALG / SEALG – Paris, 3 rd July 2015 the fifteen, asked Etienne Fourmont, the figure of the orientalist at that time, to form a collection of Chinese and Indian books. -

Candi Perwara, Bokoharjo, Prambanan, Kabupaten Sleman, Daerah Istimewa UNESCO World Heritage Site Yogyakarta 57454 Indonesia unesco | 1 PRAMBANAN THE LEGEND The astonishing temples of Prambanan, believed to be the proof of love from Bandung Bondowoso to Princess Loro Jonggrang, are the best remaining examples of Java’s extended period of Hindu culture. Located 17 kilometers northeast of Yogyakarta, the temples boast of a wealth of sculptural detail and are considered to be one of Indonesia’s most phenomenal examples of Hindu art. Legend says that there were once a thousand temples standing in the area, but due to a great earthquake in the 16th century, accelerated by the treasure hunters and locals searching for building material, many of the temples are gone now. Initiatives to restore the temples have been conducted to some extent, though many stand in ruin today. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Prambanan Temple Compounds. PHOTO BY MICHAEL TURTLE prambanan | 2 prambanan | 3 CONSTRUCTION The Prambanan temple is the largest Hindu temple of ancient Java, and the first building was completed in the mid-9th century. It was likely started by Rakai Pikatan as the Hindu Sanjaya Dynasty’s answer to the Buddhist Sailendra Dynasty’s Borobudur and Sewu temples nearby. Historians suggest that the construction of Prambanan probably was meant to mark the return of the Hindu Sanjaya Dynasty to power in Central Java after almost a century of Buddhist Sailendra Dynasty domination. The construction of this massive Hindu temple signifies that the Medang court had shifted its patronage from Mahayana Buddhism to Shaivite Hinduism.
