C HILDREN Home is Holy: Living as Christians We are called to live as Christians, not just when we are at “religious” events at church, but all of the time. This is not easy. We don’t want to offend others by telling them they should convert to our religion. But we are called to be imitators of Jesus and how he included everyone, for- gave those who were doing wrong, and worked to bring care and hope to the poor, sick, and lonely. St. Paul tried to imitate Christ and asked his readers to be imitators of Christ with him. Today we are called to do the same. Today, and throughout Lent, children at the 9 am Mass will receive a special children’s bulletin “For God so Loved….” This bulletin reminds us of the jour- ney of faith our ancestors traveled, and helps children to reflect on God’s love for them every day. This week children will also receive a magnet with the image of a shamrock, reminding us that this beloved symbol of Ireland was St. Pat- rick’s tool for teaching about the Holy Trinity. First Communion Mass Choice Parents of children who will be celebrating First Communion in May 2019 will receive an important e-mail on Tuesday, March 19, at noon. The e-mail will include a link to the on- line form to sign up for First Communion Retreats and Masses. This e-mail will be sent to those families who have attended the required First Communion Parent Sessions. If you do not receive the e-mail, contact Margaret Johnson immediately. Religious Education Class Schedule for March Religious Education classes, preschool-Grade 8, will NOT meet March 24 through April 6, due to the Religious Educa- tion Congress in Anaheim March 22-24, followed by PV Schools’ Spring Break. Classes resume Sunday, April 7.

Confirmation Classes Year 1 Confirmation Classes Keep working on your Lenten JAS service and PEW experiences for the second semester reflection paper due in May. Year 2 Confirmation Classes Sunday, March 17 at 2:50 pm Candidates Only in the Gym OR Monday, March 18 at 6:50 pm Candidates Only in the Gym Gospel Recap: Do You Deeply Pray or Merely Escape? After powerful retreats, teens get very inspired and don’t ever want to leave. Peter feels this same way in today’s Gospel. The Transfiguration of Jesus can be a bit baffling for some people, but for these 3 disciples during this time of prayer, they realize the importance of Jesus and his mission. They connect his mission to historic religious leaders like and . They feel God’s presence and Peter wants to stay longer on the mountain. Our prayer life should help us to be Christ’s presence to all people— from the people in our daily life, to the people in faraway lands. If our prayer life doesn’t do this, then prayer becomes little more than an escape from reality. Lent is a good time to evaluate your prayer and worship life. Is it merely an escape, or is it a fueling station for your journey as Jesus’ ?

St. John Fisher Catholic Community FAITH ENRICHMENT SCRIPTURE STUDY SERIES 2019 GROWING IN THE WORD: GALATIANS AND ROMANS Did you know that many of the books in the New Testament are actually letters? In the days of the early Christian church, it was not possible for the apostles to actually visit each Christian community, instead the teachings of the faith were shared in the form of letters written to specific congregations and then circulated among the many other Christian communities. These letters, also known as epistles, provide instructions to the individual congregation being addressed in addition to containing the teachings of the Christian faith.

In this bible study we will look at two of these epistles, Galatians and Romans, written by the apostle Paul. In Galatians, Paul writes to the Christian communities in Galatia, many of which were established by him during his missionary travels. Paul is concerned about the growing controversy in regards to Gentile Christians and the Mosaic Law among the Galatia community of believers. In Romans, Paul writes to introduce himself to the community in and also to address issues of mounting tension between the Jewish-Christians and the Gentile-Christians regarding certain practices of the faith.

Join us in this five week study as we learn about the struggles and challenges faced by early Christian communities.
