CHURCH OF ST.

Rev. William B. Leone: Pastor 207 Garfield Street Rev. William Endres: In Residence East Rochester, NY 14445 Deacon Dermot Loughran http://stjeromerochester.org/ Deacon Thomas Ecker—Retired Sr. Clare Brown, SSJ: Pastoral Associate MISSION STATEMENT We, the members of the Church of St. Jerome, believe in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. Empowered by this belief, we seek through the celebration of the Mass, to be Christ’s presence in the world. Having celebrated the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist in the Holy Mass, we strive to build Christian community through prayer and service. We humbly place all our efforts under the special patronage of the January 13, 2019 Blessed, ever Mary, the Mother of God and our mother in the faith.

Dear Parishioners, Thank you for the many greetings and gifts you have so generously given this Christmastime. I appreciate your thoughtfulness and love. You continue to be an inspiration to me by your lives. And now I would like to share some good news with you. In the several parish churches that had undergone renovations and had relocated tabernacles to side chapels are now moving them back to where they once were. The desire after Vatican Council II was to focus everyone’s attention on the altar during the celebration of Mass. In the process tabernacles were moved aside. A downside to moving tabernacles aside was that belief in Christ’s divine presence in the Church diminished. Remember when you didn’t talk in Church out of reverence for Christ’s presence there? It is true that the reserved Sacrament in the tabernacle is primarily for ministration to the sick; and to provide a place where people can come and adore God who is truly present there. But it is also true that the proximity of the tabernacle to the altar, and the centrality of the tabernacle in the sanctuary are powerful reminders that the grace of the Holy Mass continues for us even when the Mass is finished. Indeed Christ is truly present! Belief in this truth has diminished over the years since many tabernacles were relocated or moved totally out of sight. Recently in our diocese several churches have begun to reevaluate things, and have begun to put tabernacles back near the altar of Sacrifice. I am happy to tell you that we at St. Jerome are among that number. The crucifix has been repositioned in anticipation of this change. When the pedestal for the tabernacle is finished, we will move our Lord Jesus Christ back to the center of His Church. The space where the tabernacle is now will become a shrine to our patron St. Jerome, and a place of special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, who I think will be pleased at the honor we are rendering her Son. What mother does not like her child to be honored? God bless you and your families, and let us pray that our love for the Mass, and the Divine Lord who is with us always, may increase daily. Come every Sunday to Mass. There is no better way to worship God than by actively participating in Holy Mass.

Respectfully,

Fr. Leone
