CONCERNING RECOGNITION OF MILITARY, VETERANS, AND MIA/POW APPRECIATION DAY.

WHEREAS, has a proud and distinguished history of dedicated military service by men and women ofthis state whose courage, heroism, and sacrifice preserve the liberties and democratic way oflife set forth in our state and federal constitutions; and

WHEREAS, Colorado is home to a significant number of military installations, including , the Air Force Academy, Buckley Air Force Base, , Schriever Air Force Base, and Air Force Station, that contribute not only to the national security of our nation but to the economic health ofour state; and WHEREAS, Colorado benefits significantly from the presence and military service ofthe more than 53,000 men and women in our state who serve in the , Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard; the branch Reserves; the Colorado National Guard; and the Civil Air Patrol; and

WHEREAS, The men and women ofthe Colorado National Guard have served in defense ofour nation and as the first military responders in support of civil authorities during domestic emergencies and are celebrating their 156th anniversary this year; and

WHEREAS, In times of conflict around the globe, it is particularly .appropriate to recognize the Coloradans in all branches and components ofthe Armed Services who serve around the world to protect the security and peace ofour nation and other nations; and

WHEREAS, In addition to active members of the Armed Services, Colorado is the proud home ofmore than 391,000 military veterans who have served their country long and well and who bring great honor and distinction to the state; and

WHEREAS, Colorado is home not only to active duty service personnel and veterans but also to the countless family members ofthese men and women who display the same dedication, courage, and sacrifice; and

WHEREAS, We should also never forget the sacrifices made for us by the 94 men from Colorado declared missing in action or prisoners of war while defending the principles of liberty and justice in conflicts in Korea, Laos, and Vietnam; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the House ofRepresentatives ofthe Seventieth GeneralAssemblyofthe State ofColorado, the Senate concurringherein:

(1) That we, the members of the Seventieth General Assembly, hereby extend our heartfelt gratitude to our state's veterans, past and present, to all military men and women currently serving in the Armed

PAGE 2-HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 16-1003 Services, and to the family members ofactive dutypersonnel andveterans and that we remember and honorthose prisoners ofwar and those missing in action from previous conflicts;

(2) That we express our continued partnership with and support of Fort Carson and maintain our strong commitment to supporting ongoing military training at the Mountain Post; and

(3) That we encourage the citizens of Colorado to join in the celebration of Colorado's Military, Veterans, and MIAlPOW Appreciation Day on January 29, 2016, in recognition and honor ofthe thousands of fellow citizens in the military who protect and serve their communities, state, and country.
