The Price Library of Judaica Ruth Gruber Pamphlet Collection Located in the Judaica Suite, Smathers Library (East), 2nd Floor The media attention that Dr. Ruth Gruber’s passing away at the age of 105 generated in November 2016 is comparable only to the interest with which the public had been following her reporting from all over the world throughout the long decades of her stellar career. Born to Russian Jewish immigrants in on September 30, 1911, at an early age she had expressed her wish to become a writer. Acting on this wish, she graduated from high school at the age of 15. Five years later, in 1931, she earned a from the University of , . As all her biographies and obituaries note, at that time Dr. Gruber was the youngest doctor of philosophy in Germany. Instead of academia, however, she chose journalism and later she described her experience in Germany as that of a witness of the Nazi regime’s rise. Her first major success as a journalist came in 1935, not long after her return to the . Thanks to a Guggenheim fellowship and the Tribune that granted her journalist credentials, like no other Western journalist before, she flew to the Gulag to gather material for her reportage on women living under communism, fascism, and democracy. Over seven decades later, Dr. Gruber was still actively writing, testified (literarily) by her book Witness: One of the great correspondents of the twentieth century tells her story, published in 2007. Following the sad news of her death, her son David Michaels offered the volumes, mostly pamphlets, that now form the Price Library of Judaica Ruth Gruber Pamphlet Collection. These items hold a mirror to Dr. Gruber’s exceptional carrier, her relentless desire to explore, and her preparedness on the issues she has been covering, such as the plight of the Oswego refugees in 1944, the work of the Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry on , the Nuremberg Trials, the tragic journey of SS 1947, and the Yemenite, Ethiopian, and Iraqi Jewish refugees’ flight to . Accordingly, among the volumes patrons can find materials on and all over the world, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the relations between the and Arabic states, Jewish life in Arabic countries, Israel and , Israel’s relations with its Arabic neighbors, , Jewish refugees and immigration to Israel, Judaism and culture in Israel, and more in different languages. The majority of the volumes in the collection is in English, and there are items in French, Spanish, German, Yiddish, and Hungarian. With the exception of a few periodicals in Library West, the items are arranged in growing Library of Congress call number order in six boxes in the Judaica Suite. The box numbers are indicated in the first column of the following list. Patrons will find interesting the relative high number of pamphlets published by executive authorities in various countries. For example, a description of the economic, political, and social conditions in the under Egyptian rule, Gamal over Gaza: Egyptian neocolonialism in Gaza - a record of twenty years of oppression was published by the Information Division of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs in October 1968, that is a year after Israel replaced Egypt occupying the Gaza Strip. On a completely different note, Children Art in the U.S.S.R. was published in Moscow in 1939 by the Foreign Languages Publishing House and discusses the artwork produced by children living in the Soviet Union. “The drawings of Soviet children, like their games, reflect the great work of construction and renewal going on in their country,” the author S. Marshak notes (p. 6).
