Towards Excellence ANNUAL REPORT 2014 Hillel’s Mission Enriching the lives of Jewish students so that they may enrich the Jewish people and the world. Hillel’s Vision We envision a world where every student is inspired to make an enduring commitment to Jewish life, learning and Israel. Dear Friends, First, thank you. As we reflect on the past year, all of us in the global Hillel movement extend our gratitude for supporting our work as we build the future of the Jewish people. Everything we do every day on every campus, and in every community we serve in North America and around the world, is for that singular purpose. It is only thanks to your generosity that Hillel International is able to provide the programs and services to develop the next generation of the global Jewish people. Our mission is vital. Our work is neverending. We recently concluded the inaugural Hillel International Global Assembly in Orlando, Florida. The more than 600 Hillel professionals in attendance hailed from the United States, Canada, Israel, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Russia and Ukraine. Today, Hillel operates on five continents in 18 time zones. Just before we gathered in Orlando, we traveled to Berlin to announce the historic launch of Hillel in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This year we also celebrated Hillel’s 20th year operating in Russia and the former Soviet Union. This report provides a snapshot of what Hillel, with your generous contributions, has accomplished over the past year here in North America and around the world. But as we all know, there are many human victories we win daily that begin with a call to a rabbi or a cup of coffee with a dedicated Hillel professional. Those stories are as numerous as the stars themselves. Looking back on this past year, Hillel celebrated its 90th anniversary of serving Jewish college students, culminating in our most successful Renaissance Gala ever, held at the Pierre Hotel in New York City, honoring Mark R. Shenkman, Tulane University President Scott S. Cowen and Tulane University Executive Vice President Yvette Jones, and Rabbi Jeffrey Summit, Neubauer Executive Director of Tufts University Hillel. This year we spent much time and effort developing “The Drive to Excellence,” our new strategic implementation plan, that poses one core question: How can we become truly excellent across our entire global Hillel movement? We believe that the global Jewish community deserves nothing less than excellence. Our college students and young adults deserve nothing less. We have a responsibility to ensure excellence for this generation of students, our children and grandchildren, and our future leaders. We must ensure that they have every opportunity to develop a strong Jewish identity and to experience a rich, vibrant Jewish life. That is what Hillel International is committed to doing. With your continued assistance, we will do it together … for the future of the Jewish people. Eric D. Fingerhut Randall R. For some of us, lighting the candles may be motivated by wishing to carry out mitzvot, but for me, participating in Hillel is more about fostering community. It allows for a meeting of the minds, for people of a shared heritage to come together, to honor our people’s past and to think about how to shape the future with Jewish values of tikkun olam and tzedek.” — Jaclyn Shaw, SUNY Geneseo Hillel, in The Times of Israel “Hillel has created the opportunity for us to fulfill the Jewish vision for everlasting Jewish community, no matter where we have been, where we are, and where we are going. You make Jewish journeys possible.” — Maayan Vazana, Engagement Intern, Stony Brook Hillel The Meyerhoff Center for Jewish Experience is the innovator and educational engine of the global Hillel movement. The Meyerhoff Center: • Provides Jewish learning opportunities and educational training critical to the advancement of Hillel professionals and their work with students. • Engages with vast numbers of students, providing them with rich Jewish content. • Gathers, curates and disseminates Jewish content for the Hillel movement. “Knowledge of Jewish ideas and a fluent understanding of them are critical to the flourishing of the Jewish people. It is our role to help Hillel professionals and students achieve this fluency.” — Abi Dauber Sterne, Hillel International Vice President for Jewish Education & Director of The Meyerhoff Center “As we chanted the Kol Nidre prayers, I briefly stayed silent and listened to the combination of voices that surrounded me. The variety of voices gave me the chills, and made me smile at the beautiful sound of our community. Whether they were voices of those I could recognize or not, each and every single person’s voice and passion contributed to that sound. I encourage all members of the community to join us on Friday nights at Hillel, where each voice has its place and meaning; and serves to make us a more harmonious community. — Susie Klein, student leader of Hillel at The Claremont Colleges “Israel is a place of beauty, vibrancy, and love, even in a time of war, and that is true strength. I feel lucky to have seen the strength of this country and its people, and I cannot wait to return.” — Rachel Zuckerman, 2014 Taglit-Birthright Israel Hillel participant and Princeton University Class of 2017 • More than 100,000 students have traveled to Israel on Hillel-led trips. • Hillel is the #1 organizer of Taglit-Birthright Israel trips in the former Soviet Union, with 6,500 participants since 2001. • In partnership with Masa Israel Journey, Hillel connects Jewish students to more than 200 opportunities for an immersive and life-changing 5-12 months in Israel. “The opportunity to tell my Israel story, to share my Jewishness with the students, and to represent the Jewish people in this journey was really incredible. It strengthened my sense of connection to and love for the Jewish state as the cornerstones of my personal Jewish identity.” — Amir Sagron, Jewish Agency for Israel Fellow at the Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale University • Israel Engaged Campus, a new partnership between Hillel and the Jewish Agency for Israel, aims to ensure that every Jewish college student can develop a strong relationship to Israel and Israelis, and that the campus environment is supportive of Israel. • In a first-of-its-kind partnership between Hillel International and Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP), Boston’s Jewish Federation, 5 major universities are participating in the first national pilot to expand CJP’s successful Israel Campus Initiative: IACT – Inspired, Active, Committed, Transformed. Building on the success of Taglit-Birthright Israel by providing support and inspiration to students before and after their trip, the new program recruits more Jewish students to participate in Taglit-Birthright Israel trips and better engages them in Jewish life when they return. This year’s pilot campuses include: University of Florida, University of Maryland, University of Texas, the Ohio State University, and the University of California at Santa Barbara. • Our group of Senior Jewish Educators and Campus Rabbis has grown from 12 to 34. • 85 professionals participated in core Jewish learning and professional development through small-group learning settings, including web-based learning and immersive experiences run by Hillel and by partner organizations. Hartman iEngage Fellowship for Campus Professionals • In our second year of collaboration with the Shalom Hartman Institute, 12 senior Hillel professionals took part in the Hartman iEngage Fellowship for Campus Professionals, a yearlong study of a values-based Israel curriculum. • Over the course of three years, more than 40 professionals will have experienced this transformative program. This learning has created a more nuanced and educational approach to Israel on campus, informing the development of programs such as Northwestern University Hillel’s “Jews, Power, and Purim: What does Shushan have to teach us about Modern Israel?” and Williams College Hillel’s “Is Zionism Still a Jewish Ideal?” 350 professionals and 250 students took part in the 2014 Hillel Institute in St. Louis. “Rabbi Josh has been a crucial mentor and guide in the expansion of my Jewish identity and learning. He has challenged me to examine Jewish texts and practices and consider how they should fit into my life.
