As the Museum of Fine Arts pays tribute to prolific fashion designer Oscar de la Renta, local style icons look back on his impact on both their lives and the world. By Michele Meyer The first major fashion exhibit at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston began with one phone call, when philanthropist Lynn Wyatt rang up Museum Director Gary Tinterow. Having seen a tribute to the late, great Oscar de la Renta at San Francisco’s de Young museum, Wyatt believed Houston should stage its own showcase of the dapper designer. After all, he’d often visited our city and had clad not only Audrey Hepburn, Taylor Swift, Oprah Winfrey and every first lady of the United States—from Nancy Reagan to Michelle Obama— but also many local fashionistas, Wyatt among them. Needless to say, Tinterow agreed. Rest assured that the resulting exhibit, The Glamour and Romance of Oscar de la Renta—on view through Jan. 28—is no knock-off. Not only did de la Renta’s heirs and French label Pierre Balmain share corporate and personal archives, but some of Houston’s best-dressed denizens opened their own closets to the MFA. Each section features gorgeous garb loaned by Wyatt; former Mayor Bob Lanier’s wife, Elyse Lanier; fine arts patron Rosanette Cullen; anesthesiologist Yvonne Cormier; and former first lady Laura Bush. “He told me he had a special affection for the women of Houston because they had style and wore their clothes beautifully,” Cormier says. -

The problem is on the rise and many designers are taking hits due to the frequency and success of the culprits. While large retailers such as Forever 21, Zara, Topshop and H&M are soaring, many young designers are struggling to survive. -

What is the Museum’s role in the 21st century? What have we learned from history? What must be done? What can we do as individuals? 2006 Closing the ANNUAL REPORT ExpandingAchievement Opportunities for Children and Gap Adults with Learning Disabilities National Center Learning Disabilities, Inc. The power to hope, to learn, and to succeed The National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) works to ensure that the nation’s 15 million children, adolescents and adults with learning disabilities have every opportunity to succeed in school, work and life. NCLD provides essential information to parents, professionals and individuals with learning disabilities; promotes research and programs to foster effective learning; and advocates for policies to protect and strengthen educational rights and opportunities. Our Mission As NCLD looks back at 2006—our 29th year—we acknowledge two important realities for individuals with learning disabilities (LD): ■ Message First, children and adults with LD are achieving more FROM THE CHAIRMAN success than ever before—whether in school, at work or AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR in life. Trends in many key performance areas are positive. Dropout rates are lower, more students are graduating with a standard high school diploma and more are attending college. ■ Second, children with LD continue to perform far below their peers. Two-thirds of students with learning deficits, whether in math or in reading, fall three or more grade levels behind their classmates—a recipe not only for academic failure, but for poor self-esteem, as well. These achievement gaps are unacceptable. They demand attention, innovative solutions based on scientific research and a larger infusion of financial support from both private and public sources. In the past year, NCLD has renewed its efforts to help close gaps like these—by developing and implementing research-based programs, by strengthening public policy and by providing parents and educators with the information they need to make good decisions for their children. -
