EXPERIENCE: Library Activities

University Librarian and Associate Provost. , 2014 - . Chief executive for the UGA Libraries, which include five principal facilities: the Ilah Dunlap Little Memorial Library (main library), Science Library, Zell B. Miller Learning Center, Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries, and Health Sciences Campus Carnegie Library. The UGA Press and literary journal report to the university librarian, as does the Center for and Education at Wormsloe and the Georgia Capitol Museum. The UGA Libraries are comprised of 16 departments, with approximately 70 librarians, 160 staff members and 190 student assistants. An Association of Research Libraries member organization, the Libraries have a $23 million annual budget and encompass the technical staff and systems for the statewide GALILEO and GIL virtual library initiatives.

Deputy University Librarian. University of Georgia, 2009-2014. Participated in the development and implementation of the mission, goals and broad policy directions for the UGA Libraries, including strategic planning, administration and resource allocation. Assumed overall responsibility for the Libraries in the absence of the University Librarian, and oversaw library development/fund-raising, UGA’s six off-site research facility libraries, and the Digital Library of Georgia.

Director, Hargrett Rare Book & Manuscript Library. University of Georgia, 2008-2014. The Hargrett is the leading repository of rare books and manuscripts on Georgia history and culture; it also includes UGA Archives and Records Management. The Hargrett sponsors the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame and administers the Lillian Smith Book Awards. The position included administrative responsibilities at the Russell Special Collections Building, including oversight of facilities management, security, operation of the building’s high-density storage vaults, and supervision of 22 FTE. The Russell building holds 70K cubic feet of archives, 200K volumes, and 200K media items and offers facilities for research, instruction, public programming, exhibitions, and digital conversion. The building has hosted more than 1,100 events and class meetings since it opened in 2012.

Director, Digital Library of Georgia. University of Georgia, 2003-2014. The DLG and its companion resources provide free, open access to educational material receiving more than 4.5 million page views each year by users in nearly every community in Georgia as well as every state and many other countries.

The DLG is GALILEO’s initiative to collaborate with libraries and other cultural heritage organizations to digitize and provide Web-based access to key resources on Georgia history and culture (http://dlg.galileo.usg.edu). The DLG also operates the Athenaeum@UGA scholarly repository (http://athenaeum.libs.uga.edu), the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL) Civil War portal (http://american-south.org), and the Georgia Newspaper microfilming project. The DLG director co- directs the Civil Rights Digital Library (http://crdl.usg.edu), an award-winning nationwide portal on the African American Civil Rights Movement. The DLG also serves as one of six regional hubs for the Harvard- based Digital Public Library of America (http://dp.la). The operation includes 14 FTE (5 faculty and 9 paraprofessionals) co-funded by UGA Libraries, GALILEO, grants, and other external revenue.

Head, Special Collections. McCain Library & Archives, University of Southern Mississippi, 1999-2003. Managed operations of Archives and Manuscripts, de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection (among the top two such collections in the U.S.), Mississippiana collection, rare books, public services, and digitization. Developed the federally funded Civil Rights in Mississippi Digital Archive, providing online access to archival material and oral histories. Led planning and secured federal grant funding for the Mississippi Digital Library, the state’s collaborative digitization program. Supervised 11 FTE (5 faculty and 6 paraprofessionals).

Mississippiana Curator and Special Collections Librarian. McCain Library & Archives, University of Southern Mississippi, 1998-1999. Collection management for the Mississippiana, Rare Books, and other special collections. Collection development liaison to the History Department. Supervised operation of the Reading Room, provided reference service, and supervised 2 FTE.

Graduate Assistant. W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library, University of Alabama, 1995-1996. Developed the "CSS Alabama Digital Collection," The UA Libraries’ first digitization project.

GRANTS:

Grant-related activity amounts to about $5.5 million, including serving as principal proposal author for three National Leadership Grants (NLG) from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services, which supported digitization of civil rights materials in Mississippi, founding of Mississippi’s statewide digital library program, and development of the nationwide Civil Rights Digital Library at UGA. Service as co- principal investigator on a fourth NLG seeded the development of the Georgia Knowledge Repository, which promotes open access and digital scholarship across the University System of Georgia. Since 2013, three private foundations have awarded the Digital Library of Georgia $450K to support its participation in the Digital Public Library of America. Grant awards include:

Lead digital production for Georgia HomePLACE (Providing Library and Archives Collections Electronically), a multi-year project to enhance access to local and family history resources and to forge partnerships between public libraries and the Digital Library of Georgia. Awarded $1.7M FY03-FY13. Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL), 2010. DLG awarded $43K raised by ASERL member institutions to build a shared portal of digital content on the Civil War. National Historical Publications and Records Commission, Digitizing Historical Records Grant, 2010. The DLG is the metadata, image processing, and delivery partner for this $78K award to the Auburn Avenue Research Library for African American Culture and History. Atlanta History Center, 2010. DLG awarded $8.2K to configure and host Archivist’s Toolkit and XTF database for distribution of online finding aids. Breman Jewish Heritage Center, Atlanta, 2009. Awarded $26K raised privately by Breman Center to digitize the Southern Israelite newspaper. Historic Augusta, Inc. and the Colonial Dames of America in Georgia, 2009. Awarded $4K for digitization of material from the and Clarinda Lamar papers.

National Leadership Grant for Libraries, Institute of Museum and Library Services, 2008. Co-Principal Investigator and co-proposal author for GALILEO Knowledge Repository initiative to establish scholarly digital repository services for Georgia colleges and universities. is the lead institution, awarded $884K. Georgia Humanities Council/National Endowment for the Humanities, 2007-2008. DLG awarded $100K to create metadata for media and articles in the New Georgia Encyclopedia. National Leadership Grant for Libraries, Institute of Museum and Library Services, 2005. Proposal author and principal investigator for the “Civil Rights Digital Library Initiative.” The Initiative resulted in: 1) digital video archive of historic news film from WSB (Atlanta) and WALB (Albany, Ga.), 2) Web-based learning objects to contextualize the video segments, and 3) civil rights digital library portal providing seamless access to digital collections on a national scale. Partners are: University of Georgia, Georgia Humanities Council, and Georgia Public Broadcasting ($761,427). National Leadership Grant for Libraries, Institute for Museum and Library Services, 2003. Lead proposal author of a grant to fund a collaborative digital effort in Mississippi. Resulted in the creation of a digital archive of primary sources documenting the civil rights movement in Mississippi. Partners are the University of Southern Mississippi, Tougaloo College, Jackson State University, Delta State University, Mississippi Department of Archives and History, and the University of Mississippi ($463,322). Mississippi Humanities Council Mini-Grant, 2003. Funded a public program on 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer associated with the re-publication of the Letters from Mississippi book and the Faces of Freedom Summer photograph exhibition ($1.1K). National Leadership Grant for Libraries, Institute of Museum and Library Services, 2001-2003. Primary proposal author and director of a two-year project funded by IMLS to build the Civil Rights in Mississippi Digital Archive, an Internet-accessible database of primary sources held by the USM Libraries that document the history of race relations in the state ($204,680). National Endowment for the Humanities, 2000-2002. Directed the Encoded Archival Description portion of a grant project to arrange and describe original collections from the de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection ($228K). National Endowment for the Humanities, 2002-2003. Served on project team for a civil rights oral history preservation/digitization project conducted as a collaboration among the University of Southern Mississippi, Mississippi Department of Archives and History, and Tougaloo College ($280K).
