Dear Fellow Alumnus,

I want to make a unique appeal to you. Please consider making a gift of $10 or more to Saint Mary’s before 31st.

In these challenging economic times, it is tempting to withhold making a gift of any size. In reality, these are the times that St. Mary’s needs our generosity the most. It is tempting to think that we will only make a gift when we can make a big gift. In reality, a gift of any size makes a big difference. A gift of $10 or more allows us to count you as a donor and raises our participation level. It sends a message that you are grateful for your St. Mary’s education and that you want to be part of the cycle of generosity.

To date, 33% of our gifts this year are from first time donors. This is an exciting new trend. Whether you are a past donor and just have not made a gift to date, or are thinking about making a gift for the first time, every gift of any amount increases participation and supports St. Mary’s future. Can we count on you?

Please consider making a gift of $10 or more to St. Mary’s before August 31, 2009. You can make a gift online at www.stmaryalumni.ws by phone at 516 627 4605 or send your gift to St. Mary’s Alumni Association 51 Clapham Avenue, Manhasset, New York 11030. Your gift makes at difference at St. Mary’s.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Dear Fellow Alumnus,

The Saint Mary’s High School Alumni Association completed another successful year of accomplishments critical to the success of our school.

After the annual Don Monti Golf Classic, small groups of alumni gathered in Manhattan for a breakfast reception and in Garden City for an evening reception. These were informal gatherings that enabled alumni to network with one another and to receive an update on our school. In February, alumni were treated to a special networking event at Bar Nine in Manhattan. Kieran Blake ‘89 and manager of Bar Nine, worked with Director of Alumni Relations, Jay McDonnell, to put this event together. It was a very successful evening and Jay is already hard at work for a similar reception to be held during the summer in Manhattan.

We have just come off of our flagship event, the Hall of Fame and Annual Spring Alumni Reception at the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan. It was a warm picturesque evening when alumni of various years gathered to mix and mingle on the Club’s ninth floor terrace with views of the Manhattan skyline and Central Park. Our 2009 Hall of Fame honorees were Sister Barbara Jablonski, IHM ‘59, Brother John Klein, FMS ‘65, Lee ‘62, and Rosemary Hoban ‘81.

Honoring Sister Barbara and Brother John was not only a testament to their success and distinguished religious careers, but also what alumni have achieved due to the guiding principals taught to us by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Marist Brothers. Lee Hayes has succeeded in business while taking the time and energy to give back to a number of charitable causes, especially his Alma Mater. And Rosemary Hoban has succeeded in the medical field by serving the less fortunate in third world countries in the midst of disease and political strife. All four of our Hall of Fame honorees are role models to us and the students of St. Mary’s. They represent What Is St. Mary’s.

In closing, I would like to welcome into our ranks the newest class of alumni, the Class of 2009. I congratulate them on their hard work and achievements in completing a rigorous and challenging academic program and wish them success in the next chapter of their lives.

I extend to you and your family best wishes for a restful and safe summer and I look forward to meeting you at our upcoming events.

With best wishes,

Andrew F.J. Della Ratta ‘88 in the spotlight

Siedlick encouraged students to “do good with what you know.” He said that today’s 24/7 news coverage which usually presents us with the worst in human behavior, it’s sometimes hard to see how much good is really being done. The Long Lost Ring by Carol Alutto McCarthy

In February 2009, Theresa Balos and her sister, Dorothy Pfrang came to the school with a unique alumni situation. They were cleaning out their late mother’s house, and stumbled upon a St. Mary’s Boys’ High School ring that their mother had found in St. Mary’s Church approximately 30 years ago. The only clue as to the ring’s rightful owner were the initials JRS and the inscribed class year of 1980. It was a long shot, but these two women were committed to having the ring returned to its rightful owner.

After a search through the 1980 yearbook, we narrowed the potential candidates down to Jeffrey R. Schaefer, the only 1980 graduate with the correct initials. We sent Mr. Schaefer a letter alerting him of the situation, and hoped for a good outcome. A month later, Mr. Schaefer called the alumni office to say that he believed the ring was his, even though he had not seen it for almost 30 years. After some coordination, Mrs. Balos and her sister ultimately met Mr. Schaefer’s father and returned his son’s ring. Against all odds, one proud St. Mary’s alumni had reclaimed his high school ring thanks to the determination and good deed of two very kind women.
