It is generally accepted that what we now possess is the growth of family or tribal histories, which, from being transmitted down, from generation to generation, give us fair accounts of actual events. The Tales that are here given are only a few out of very many hundreds embedded in the vast quantity of Old Gaelic manuscripts hidden away in the libraries of nearly all the countries of Europe, as well as those that are treasured in the Royal Irish Academy and Trinity College, Dublin. An idea of the extent of these manuscripts may be gained by the statement of one, who perhaps had the fullest knowledge of them the late Professor O'Curry, in which he says that the portion of them (so far as they have been examined) relating to His- torical Tales would extend to upwards of 4000 pages of large size. This great mass is nearly all untrans- lated, but all the Tales that are given in this volume have already appeared in English, either in The Publications of the Society for the Preservation of the Irish Language] the poetical versions of The IV A LAND OF HEROES. The Celtic World ENGL 393 Professor Farina TuTh 2:30-3:45, Clark 200 The ancient Celts have fascinated many people who came after them—not only their own descendents but writers, artists, and historians from the 11th century to the present. These distant and somewhat enigmatic people have a strong hold on our own popular imagination: contemporary film, television, comic books, and romance fiction abound with Celtic-inspired fantasy. This course provides an introduction to the literature, art, and history of “Celtic” peoples before 1600: i.e. the Irish, Welsh, Scots, Cornish, and Bretons. “Celtic” is here in quotes because one of our main inquiries will be whether there was or is something like a truly pan-Celtic identity. In order to understand whether “Celticness” is an ancient or modern phenomenon, we will also discuss how the early Celts have been represented in later periods. Other topics to be discussed include: the Celtic hero (particularly Cú Chulain and King Arthur); the Celtic Otherworld; Bardic poetry; and Celtic Christianity. Culture, Tourism, Europe and External Relations Committee Scotland’s Screen Sector Written submission from Caledonia TV Introduction Glasgow based Caledonia TV is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. We make quality popular factual programmes for all the major UK broadcasters and have a growing international slate. Caledonia has produced hundreds of hours for the BBC – Channels 2 and 4, Scotland, Alba, Wales, Northern Ireland and BBC America - ITV, Channel 4, Five, Sky, Foxtel, The History Channel Europe, USA and Australia, the Crime & Investigation Channel and Germany’s ZDF. We now employ 14 people full time, along with various freelancers. We currently have a four year output deal for 24 hours per year of programming from BBC Alba. Leadership, Strategy and Support How can the industry successfully implement the recommendations outlined in the Screen Sector Leadership Group report? The core message of the SSLG recommendations is increased investment. There is no doubt Scotland has creativity, business expertise and talent. But Scotland is also lagging behind, not just the rest of the world, but other parts of the UK. In our submission, we focus on our experiences of previous investment – good and bad - and strategies for the future. How can we ensure that the Screen Unit has the remit and responsibility for providing the strategic vision and leadership across the sector? The screen sector – with its own wide range of conflicting remits from cultural to commercial – sits within a still wider arts body Creative Scotland (CS). It is critical that the Screen Unit (SU) adopts a coherent targeted approach to our complex and fast changing industry with its different, sometimes competing, priorities. -

Having spent a millennium or more as a sovereign nation-with its own culture, economy, laws, and even monarchy-Scotland joined with England (and Wales) in creating the United Kingdom of Great Britain by ratifying the Articles of Union with the passage of the Union with England Act of 1707 (the Union).' Within a few years of the Union, however, Scots fought to restore their independence.2 For many, the fight continues today. With the U.K.'s massive constitutional overhaul of the past two decades,' including the re-establishment of the Scottish Parliament and the devolution to Scotland of some aspects of national governance and sovereignty (under the Scotland Act of 1998),5 the issue of independence has gained renewed significance.' In the 2007 Scottish parliamentary elections, for instance the Scottish National Party (SNP) made an incredible showing; a "central plank" of the SNP platform is a referendum for independence.7 Parallel developments across the U.K. -

CUBA AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF ALTERNATIVE GLOBAL TRADE SYSTEMS: ALBA AND FREE TRADE IN THE AMERICAS LARRY CATÁ BACKER* & AUGUSTO MOLINA** ABSTRACT The ALBA (Alternativa Bolivariana para los Pueblos de Nuestra América) (Bolivarian Alternative for The People of Our America), the command economy alternative to the free trade model of globalization, is one of the greatest and least understood contributions of Cuba to the current conversation about globalization and economic harmonization. Originally conceived as a means for forging a unified front against the United States by Cuba and Venezuela, the organization now includes Nicaragua, Honduras, Dominica, and Bolivia. ALBA is grounded in the notion that globalization cannot be left to the private sector but must be overseen by the state in order to maximize the welfare of its citizens. The purpose of this Article is to carefully examine ALBA as both a system of free trade and as a nexus point for legal and political resistance to economic globalization and legal internationalism sponsored by developed states. The Article starts with an examination of ALBA’s ideology and institutionalization. It then examines ALBA as both a trade organization and as a political vehicle for confronting the power of developed states in the trade context within which it operates. ALBA remains * W. CELTIC INTERNATIONAL FUND BBC ALBA (with funding from MG ALBA), S4C, TG4 and Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund (ILBF) are delighted to announce the second round of the ‘Celtic International Fund’, a yearly joint-commissioning round between the indigenous Celtic language television broadcasters and funders of Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland The aim of the ‘Celtic International Fund’ is to promote co-development and then co-production through Scottish Gaelic, Welsh and Irish, and to encourage a broader European and worldwide internationalisation of productions which are originally conceived in those Celtic languages. The Celtic International Fund hopes to provide film-makers with an opportunity to co-develop and coproduce distinctive, ambitious works to enrich primetime programme schedules, to have a national impact with audiences in the territories of Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland and seek to reach audiences worldwide. This call-out encompasses three genres, Factual, Formats and Drama. For all projects, we envisage a development phase where funding would be provided to develop ideas but also to develop the co- production framework which must have a production element in Scotland, Wales and either Ireland or Northern Ireland. Feedback from producers regarding genres to be included in ensuing Celtic International Fund call-outs is welcome. Kingdom of Strathclyde From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Strathclyde (lit. "Strath of the Clyde"), originally Brythonic Ystrad Clud, was one of the early medieval kingdoms of the Kingdom of Strathclyde Celtic people called the Britons in the Hen Ogledd, the Teyrnas Ystrad Clut Brythonic-speaking parts of what is now southern Scotland and northern England. The kingdom developed during the ← 5th century–11th → post-Roman period. It is also known as Alt Clut, the Brythonic century name for Dumbarton Rock, the medieval capital of the region. It may have had its origins with the Damnonii people of Ptolemy's Geographia. The language of Strathclyde, and that of the Britons in surrounding areas under non-native rulership, is known as Cumbric, a dialect or language closely related to Old Welsh. Place-name and archaeological evidence points to some settlement by Norse or Norse–Gaels in the Viking Age, although to a lesser degree than in neighbouring Galloway. A small number of Anglian place-names show some limited settlement by incomers from Northumbria prior to the Norse settlement. Due to the series of language changes in the area, it is not possible to say whether any Goidelic settlement took place before Gaelic was introduced in the High Middle Ages. After the sack of Dumbarton Rock by a Viking army from Dublin in 870, the name Strathclyde comes into use, perhaps reflecting a move of the centre of the kingdom to Govan. In the same period, it was also referred to as Cumbria, and its inhabitants as Cumbrians. During the High Middle Ages, the area was conquered by the Kingdom of Alba, becoming part of The core of Strathclyde is the strath of the River Clyde. -

Ni{ i Vizantija V 513 Graham Jones PROCLAIMED AT YORK: THE IMPACT OF CONSTANTINE, SAINT AND EMPEROR, ON COLLECTIVE BRITISH MEMORIES Constantine, raised to Augustan rank by the acclaim of the Roman sol- diers at York in 306, was not the only emperor whose reign began in Britain. As one of Rome’s most distant territories, and of course an island (Fig. 1), Britain seems always to have been vunerable to revolt, as indeed were all the west- ernmost provinces to greater or lesser degree.1 As early as 197, Albinus seized power in the West. Two generations later came the so-called Gallic Empire of Gallienus and his successors, in which Britain was involved together with Gaul, Spain and the Low Countries. It lasted for about twenty years in the middle of the third century. A series of usurpers – most famously Magnus Maximus, proclaimed emperor in Britain in 383, but continuing with Marcus in 406/7, Gratian in the latter year, and Constantine III from 408 to 411 – led the British monk Gildas, writing around 500, to describe his country as a ‘thicket of ty- rants’, echoing Jerome’s phrase that Britain was ‘fertile in usurpers’. Indeed, Constantine’s proclamation might not have happened at York were it not for the involvement of his father in pacifying Britain. Constantius crossed to Britain in 296 to end a ten-year revolt by a Belgian commander Carausius and his succes- sor Allectus. Constantius’ action in preventing the sack of London by part of the defeated army was commemorated by a famous gold medallion on which he is shown receiving the thanks of the city’s inhabitants as Redditor Lucis Aeternam (Fig. -
