  • The Paleolithic and Mesolithic Occupation of the Isle of Jura, Argyll
John MERCER, Edinburgh THE PALAEOLITHIC AND MESOLITHIC OCCUPATION OF THE ISLE OF JURA, ARGYLL, SCOTLAND The occupation sequence about to be described has been built up from a dozen sites concentrated in N-Jura (Mercer, 1968-79).It is based on local land-sea relationships, site stratification, pollen analysis, drifted-pumice dating and radiocarbon assay. The paper 1 will begin with a discussion of the inter-linked shorelines and climate, then give an impression of the main sites and, finally, describe and compare the stone implement typology. Late Glacial habitat 2017 Jura is a vast island (fig.1) some 80 km (50 m) long.It rises to about 780 m (2500ft) Biblioteca, in the south and 470 m (1500 ft)in the north. Several recent papers have shown that W-Scotland was suitable for human habita ULPGC. tion from 11,000 or 10,500 BC. Kirk and Godwin (1963) described an organic level por at Loch Drama (Ross and Cromarty) which, with a C14 date of 12,810 ± 155 be (Q-457), had not since been overlaid by ice, although in a through valley.Kirk com realizada mented: "In view of its location on the exposed, north-west Atlantic rim of Scotland one would except ...an onset of milder oceanic conditions at an earlier date than localities in the English Lowlands or the North European Plain." He concluded his Digitalización contribution: " ... it would appear that in Northern Scotland the process of degla ciation was not unlike that established for Scandinavia, namely an early and rapid autores. los melt of the ice in western fjords and a longer survival in uplands east of the Atlantic watershed. The significance of such a possibility for plant, animal and human coloni sation needs no stressing." documento, Del Coope (summarised in Pennington, 1974), working on beetle remains, noted that © early in Zone I (12,380-10,000 BC) there was a rapid rise in temperature, from less than 10° C as a July average to almost 17° C, though winters may have remained cold.

  • Stories from Early Irish History
1 ^EUNIVERJ//, ^:IOS- =s & oo 30 r>ETRr>p'S LAMENT. A Land of Heroes Stories from Early Irish History BY W. LORCAN O'BYRNE WITH SIX ILLUSTRATIONS BY JOHN E. BACON BLACKIE AND SON LIMITED LONDON GLASGOW AND DUBLIN n.-a INTEODUCTION. Who the authors of these Tales were is unknown. It is generally accepted that what we now possess is the growth of family or tribal histories, which, from being transmitted down, from generation to generation, give us fair accounts of actual events. The Tales that are here given are only a few out of very many hundreds embedded in the vast quantity of Old Gaelic manuscripts hidden away in the libraries of nearly all the countries of Europe, as well as those that are treasured in the Royal Irish Academy and Trinity College, Dublin. An idea of the extent of these manuscripts may be gained by the statement of one, who perhaps had the fullest knowledge of them the late Professor O'Curry, in which he says that the portion of them (so far as they have been examined) relating to His- torical Tales would extend to upwards of 4000 pages of large size. This great mass is nearly all untrans- lated, but all the Tales that are given in this volume have already appeared in English, either in The Publications of the Society for the Preservation of the Irish Language] the poetical versions of The IV A LAND OF HEROES. Foray of Queen Meave, by Aubrey de Vere; Deirdre', by Dr. Robert Joyce; The Lays of the Western Gael, and The Lays of the Red Branch, by Sir Samuel Ferguson; or in the prose collection by Dr.

  • Mega Conferences
Non-revenue sports Football, of course, provides the impetus for any conference realignment. In men's basketball, coaches will lose the built-in recruiting tool of playing near home during conference play and then at Madison Square Garden for the Big East Tournament. But what about the rest of the sports? Here's a look at the potential Missouri Pittsburgh Syracuse Nebraska Ohio State Northwestern Minnesota Michigan St. Wisconsin Purdue State Penn Michigan Iowa Indiana Illinois future of the non-revenue sports at Rutgers if it joins the Big Ten: BASEBALL Now: Under longtime head coach Fred Hill Sr., the Scarlet Knights made the Rutgers NCAA Tournament four times last decade. The Big East Conference’s national clout was hurt by the defection of Miami in 2004. The last conference team to make the College World Series was Louisville in 2007. After: Rutgers could emerge as the class of the conference. You find the best baseball either down South or out West. The power conferences are the ACC, Pac-10 and SEC. A Big Ten team has not made the CWS since Michigan in 1984. MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY Now: At the Big East championships in October, Rutgers finished 12th out of 14 teams. Syracuse won the Big East title and finished 14th at nationals. Four other Big East schools made the Top 25. After: The conferences are similar. Wisconsin won the conference title and took seventh at nationals. Two other schools made the Top 25. MEN’S GOLF Now: The Scarlet Knights have made the NCAA Tournament twice since 1983.
