IN FOCUS ENERGY

Living, working, being mobile – large cities such as Frankfurt shown here – demonstrate how enormous the energy requirements of modern societies are. IN FOCUS ENERGY

Traffic, industry, school, – nothing works without energy. The worldwide energy demand is currently being met by a mix of primarily fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal, as well as an increasing amount of renewable energies from sun, wind and water. When the prognosticated maximum of explorable oil reserves is reached in 2020, the composition of this mix will change. The share of fossil fuels will decline, while renewable energies will see a drastic rise. Voith technology is represented in virtually all kinds of power plants – increasingly also in wind power stations and thermic solar power stations.

The unanimity among climate researchers, energy authorities and politicians has never been greater: by 2020, the industrial nations have to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent below 1990 levels, if they want to limit the impact of the climate change. In order to secure sustainable future energy supplies, the worldwide energy mix (the utilization of various primary energy forms for energy provision) will have to undergo a change in the next 40 years. While the mix is currently dominated by fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas, the prognosis for 2050 looks entirely different: a large proportion will consist of the resources water, wind, solar and geothermics.

Expressed in figures by the “Bundes - anstalt für Geowissenschaften und Pipelines for energy supply – the energy mix is currently determined by fossil fuels Rohstoffe” (Federal Institute for such as natural gas and oil. Utilizing the Power of the Sun With Thermic Solar Power Stations

In the energy mix of the future, water, wind, bio and solar energy plants will run side by side, in order to meet the globally agreed climate goals and utilize existing resources prudently. The natural potential of the sun alone exceeds the world- wide energy requirements many times over. The radiation of the sun on Germany, for example, is 80 times the amount of power currently being consumed.

“Desertec” is one of the most prom- ising international projects in the field of solar energy utilization. On a surface of 16 900 square kilome- tres in the Sahara, solar-thermic power stations are to be set up and produce eco-friendly electricity. This equals ten times the area of the megacity New York. Goal for Industrial Nations

40% Less CO2

By 2020, the industrial nations have to reduce their CO2 emissions by 40% below 1990 levels. Only then, so scientists, politicians and the WWF believe, will it be possible to keep global warming below the danger level of 2° C. The western industrial states and Japan produce two thirds of the current emissions.

Interview with Stephan Kohler, Chief Executive of Deutsche Energie Agentur (dena) Power Supply from Regenerative Sources Alone Is Unrealistic at Present

Alongside its production in gas and coal-fired power stations and combined power-heat systems, electricity is increasingly generated in a mix covering wind power, bio mass and photovoltaic plants. The challenge is to utilize available energy more consciously and intelligently. Energy efficiency and regenerative energies are high on the agenda, not only in Germany and Europe, but also in China and Russia. With dena, Stephan Kohler is working on energy service strategies for governments and companies. The purpose is a worldwide sustainable and secure energy supply.

Why does it still make sense to campaign for fuels such as coal, oil and gas?

Stephan Kohler: Let me give you a figure: in the 2050s, the share of fossil energy carriers will still amount to some 40 percent. The reason for this is supply security. As far as grid feeding is concerned, energy from sun and wind – based on current technologies – is still highly fluctu- ating. If we want to expand further on regenerative energies, we need fossil power stations for providing secured outputs alongside new technologies for energy storage.

The EcoPack study provides individual components for this undertaking, for example the start-stop function or the EcoConsult driver assistance system. Voith also pursues the idea of hybridization. First Vorecons for Liquefied Gas Production in China A New LNG Transport Every Ten Minutes

Power generation, public transport, refinery products or private consumption – China needs huge amounts of natural gas. As the country’s settlement patterns are quite disjointed, an area-covering supply with a pipeline is not practical. The solution comes in the form of gas with a temperature of minus 162° Celsius, which can be liquefied and compressed to 1/600 of its volume. This allows it to be transported comparatively easily on ships or trucks. Over the next five years, Beijing wants to double the utilization of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Against this background, the Chinese energy supplier Ningxia Hanas Natural Gas is building a new LNG plant. For the first time, Voith will supply two Vorecons for coolant compressors for this site.

First Two Partners for Voith WinDrive in China Participating in the “Three Gorges of Wind Power”

Along the antique silk road in China’s windy north-west, a wind power boom is emerging: with the construction of a ten-gigawatt wind park near Jiuquan in the province Gansu, the government continues its energy policy outlined in the “11th five-year plan for the economic and social develop- ment of China.” Work on the wind park started in August 2009 and some of the wind power systems are to be fitted with the Voith WinDrive as centerpiece in the drive train. This decision was made by LEC, one of the leading manufacturers of electric drives and generators in China.
