Visibility was therefore very bad, and this was the origin of a regrettable incident which cast a cloud over this event. At the end of the first heat the principal champions were all very close. There were fourteen competitors with less than a second between them. Probably the tracing was not sufficiently selective, so that competition was relentless on the second part which consisted of 70 sticks, traced by the Italian NOGLES. Jean-Claude KILLY achieved at 50"36 a performance which for some time was improved on only by the Swiss GIOVANOLI. However, the race was full of surprises as two men were faster than Jean-Claude KILLY and therefore preceded him in the final classification—the Swede MJOEN with 49"27 and the Austrian Karl SCHRANZ whose time was 49" 53. It was soon learnt that MJOEN was disqualified for having missed out sticks 18 and 19 like the course opener. However, the case of SCHRANZ was much more complicated and took on larger propor- tions. He had also missed out the sticks 18 and 19 the first time but he stated that he had been disturbed by someone damming between sticks 20 and 21 when he arrived there. He was allowed to ski again, subject to an enquiry. However, the jury after examining the film, concluded that SCHRANZ had really missed the sticks 18 and 19 and that this error was not due to the presence of a third party lower down the track; his disqualifi- cation was therefore pronounced.
