    Pionier Henk van der Grift bezorgde Nederland schaatskoorts (door David Bakker en Jan van Pelt) Mocht er ooit één man ‘verantwoordelijk’ worden gehouden voor de vele Nederlandse schaatssuccessen, dan is het wel Henk van der Grift. De in Breukelen geboren en getogen schaatser maakte pas in 1960, op 25-jarige leeftijd, zijn internationale debuut tijdens het Europees kampioenschap allround in Oslo. Mede door een misslag op de 500 meter, wist hij zich niet te kwalificeren voor de slotafstand, de 10.000 meter. Op het daaropvolgende wereldkampioenschap in Davos lukte dat wel en werd Henk fraai 11e in het eindklassement. Vanwege de ijsloze winters eind vijftiger jaren verhuisde hij, samen met zijn verloofde Reyka van Zijtveld, naar het Noorse Fagernes, zo’n 190 km ten noordwesten van Oslo. Op een zelfgemaakt baantje, zowat 150 meter lang, in een adembenemend decor, kon de specialist op de kortere afstanden in alle rust schaven aan zijn conditie en duurvermogen. De trainingsarbeid betaalde zich al direct uit op het eerstvolgende EK in de Finse hoofdstad Helsinki, waar Henk als tweede eindigde achter de Rus Viktor Kositsjkin. Twee weken later veroverde de Breukelaar zelfs de wereldtitel in het Zweedse Göteborg. De laatste die dit kunstje flikte voor ons land was Coen de Koning in 1905. Nederland was op slag schaatsgek met Henk van der Grift als de ultieme held. Onwillekeurig legde hij hiermee het fundament voor de successen van Ard en Keessie en de volgende generaties topschaatsers. Stobbeklûners Jan en David togen naar Henks huidige woonplaats Hedel om één van hun eerste schaatshelden te bevragen over zijn rijke schaatsverleden en de schaatssport an sich.

Nowadays it is appropriate and entirely justified to talk about the emergence of the foot- ball industry. Basically, modern soccer can be viewed as an international business, since global player trans- fers are made on a regular basis and international professional tournaments are organized. Moreover, soccer leagues may be now rightfully classified as separate commercialized industries. Certain football tournaments perform much better than their competitors in a business sense. In this work, the Russian Premier League in particular is discussed. The aim of the study is to investigate the historic and current issues of Russian soccer, the reasons for their emergence, and the present state. Furthermore, the commercial prospects and possibilities for local football’s business development are inspected. Potential solu- tions to the outlined problems are demonstrated as well.

No matter what the catalogue may include or not in­ clude there is no law that says what the collector must have in his album. It is his own possession to build and expand as he chooses. It is only when the collector wishes to exhibit for competition that certain maxims come into play; then the collector loses some of the freedom he had before. Yet exhibiting need not enjoin a collector from remaining individualistic in his approach, nor does his collection have to be a carbon copy of other similar exhibita This is especially noticeable when viewing exhibits of Olympic Games stamps. Excluding the early Greek Olympic stamps, a collector would not find it too difficult or too expensive to put together a 'complete* collection of the basic stamps. How, then, can an enthusiast put his individual touch on his own exhibit except through a different type of mounting? In my opinion, there are enough unusual items on the philatelic marketplace that a collector could add for nearly every Olympiad, some expensive but many rather nominal in price, that would add sparkle to an exhibit. All of the items mentioned below are listed in various books and guides, in­ cluding Ira Seeoacher's Handbook of Sports Stamps. However, I would like to point out some of these that seem to be overlooked in many of the exhibits.

Change that to everyone in the hockey world knows someone to put them in touch with everyone and you’re speaking the truth. This was particularly the case in 1988, when John and Lyn Erickson from Fargo purchased the International Hockey School in Detroit Lakes. A couple of years later, John used his friendship with Fargo’s Scott Bye, a financial adviser for NHLers, to meet Blackhawks goalie Ed Belfour, who had been working with Vladislav Tretiak, a part-time goalie coach in Chicago, and Belfour told Erickson that he might be able to hire the Russian legend as the star attraction for his goalie camp in Detroit Lakes. And in June 1991, Tretiak and his wife, Tatiana, were staying at the Fairyland Cottages (modeled after those seen in the film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”) on the northern shore of Detroit Lake, and getting ready for his first day at the Minnesota camp. Bill Manuel, a former goalie at Wisconsin-Stout and Lyn Erickson’s brother, recalls the first meeting when Tretiak relayed his message through Anna Goruven, his business agent and interpreter, and then agreed to take questions from campers. “We had five or six goalie instructors and had been saying, ‘OK, who is going to be the first to ask?’?” Manuel said. “Meaning, who among us was going to be the first to ask Tretiak about getting pulled as the Soviet goalie in the loss to the U.S.
