The Case of the Jungfrau- Aletsch-Bietschhorn World Heritage Site in Switzerland Astrid Wallner1, Stephan Rist2, Karina Liechti3, Urs Wiesmann4 Abstract The Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn World Heritage Site (WHS) comprises main- ly natural high-mountain landscapes. The High Alps and impressive natu- ral landscapes are not the only feature making the region so attractive; its uniqueness also lies in the adjoining landscapes shaped by centuries of tra- ditional agricultural use. Given the dramatic changes in the agricultural sec- tor, the risk faced by cultural landscapes in the World Heritage Region is pos- sibly greater than that faced by the natural landscape inside the perimeter of the WHS. Inclusion on the World Heritage List was therefore an opportunity to contribute not only to the preservation of the ‘natural’ WHS: the protected part of the natural landscape is understood as the centrepiece of a strategy | downloaded: 1.10.2021 to enhance sustainable development in the entire region, including cultural landscapes. Maintaining the right balance between preservation of the WHS and promotion of sustainable regional development constitutes a key chal- lenge for management of the WHS. Local actors were heavily involved in the planning process in which the goals and objectives of the WHS were defined. This participatory process allowed examination of ongoing prob- lems and current opportunities, even though present ecological standards were a ‘non-negotiable’ feature. Therefore the basic patterns of valuation of the landscape by the different actors could not be modified. Nevertheless, the process made it possible to jointly define the present situation and thus create a basis for legitimising future action.

FRANK,HENNING FREUND,WERNER BELLWALD,BURKHARD NEUWIRTH, MARCUS NÜSSER and JAN ESPER Zusammenfassung: 700 Jahre Siedlungs- und Baugeschichte im Lötschental, Schweiz Alle 2.317 gegenwärtig im Lötschental existierenden Gebäude wurden inventarisiert, zeitlich eingeordnet und kartiert. 1.432 von diesen Gebäuden konnten mit Hilfe von Inschriften, Jahrringen und/oder Archivdokumenten jahrgenau datiert werden. 885 Gebäude wurden durch Schätzungen zeitlich in Jahrhunderte eingeordnet. Diese Datierungen dienen als Grund- lage für die Erstellung einer Karte, welche erstmals die Gebäudealter eines gesamten alpinen Tales im Überblick darstellt. In der Karte, welche als Ergebnis einer interdisziplinären Untersuchung unter Einbeziehung lokaler Wissenssysteme und Bezeichnungen verstanden werden muss, werden sowohl Wohn- als auch Wirtschaftsgebäude integriert. Zusätzlich wurden 116 lokale Flurnamen aufgenommen und die Gebäudealter zurück bis AD 1299 in einem Histogramm dargestellt. Die Zusammenarbeit von Historikern, Volkskundlern und Geographen sowie die aus den jahrgenauen Datierungen ge- wonnenen Erkenntnisse zu geschichtlichen Bauformen und Konstruktionstechniken ermöglichten die zeitliche Einordnung von Objekten. In diesem begleitenden Text beschreiben wir die Datierungsmethoden, wesentliche Bautypen und Konstruk- tionstechniken und diskutieren alte Siedlungsmuster und ausgewählte Gebäude. Die Ergebnisse werden unter Berücksichti- gung des Kulturlandschaftswandels und der die siedlungsgeschichtlichen Entwicklungen steuernden Faktoren wie Lawinen, Dorfbränden und sozioökonomischen Prozessen diskutiert. Summary: All 2,317 current buildings within the Lötschental were registered, chronologically assigned and mapped. Annual construction dates of 1,432 of these objects based on inscriptions, tree-ring dating and/or documentary evidence were derived.

Besonders begrüsst er Scheibler Peter von der Kantonalen Jagdabteilung, das Ehrenmitglied Schwestermann Alex, Altstaatsrat Willy Schnyder, die Wildhüter Amacker Walter, Bellwald Richard und Imboden Thomas sowie die Altwildhüter Bellwald Anton, Brunner Anton und Rieder Willy, der Vertreter der Gemeinde Vizepräsident Meyer Karl und den Dianafähnrich Roth Gilbert. Kassa- und Revisorenbericht Die Jahresrechnung wurde von Kassier Bellwald Richard verlesen. Die Einnahmen belaufen sich auf Fr. 16'089.10 und die Ausga- ben auf Fr. 14'561.45. Das Vermögen beträgt neu Fr. 38'304.85 Der Revisorenbericht wurde vom Revisor Gattlen Joachim verlesen, er beantragt dem Kassier Entlastung zu erteilen. Die Kassa wurde mit Applaus genehmigt. 5. Jahresbericht des Präsidenten Der diesjährige Jahresbericht wird wie in den letzten Jahren üblich in zwei Teile aufgeteilt. Im ersten Teil lässt Präsident Manfred das verflossene Jahr kurz Revue passieren. Insbesondere erwähnt er, dass an der DV in Mörel des Oberwalliserjagdverbandes mit Daniel Ferdinand Lauber aus Zermatt ein neuer Präsident gewählt wurde.
