Some motivation

Strongly coupled theories beyond the Standard Model? Non-perturbative electroweak symmetry breaking High temperature: phase transition(s) in the early universe High density: phenomenology of neutron/ stars Precision tests of the Standard Model are only possible if hadron properties can be related to quark and gluon properties Understand QCD background in colliders Femto-chemistry: compute the hadron spectrum and structure Low energy constants and connection to nuclear physics

EU Programme Description

ITNs will be built on a joint research training programme, responding to well identified training needs in defined scientific areas, with appropriate reference to interdisciplinary and newly emerging supra-disciplinary fields. Training will be primarily focused on scientific and technological knowledge through research on individual, personalised projects, complemented by substantial training modules addressing other relevant skills and competencies. Examples include management and financing of research projects and programmes intellectual property rights and other exploitation methods of research results entrepreneurship ethical aspects communication societal outreach Gunnar Bali (Coordinator) STRONGnet 30 / 46 Outline Teams Management I Research Training Networking Management II Summary

STRONGnet implementation

The network as a whole undertakes to provide a minimum of 744 person-months of Early Stage and Experienced Researchers. The network offers trainees the opportunity to learn ideas and techniques that are applicable in a wide range of fields while participating in fundamental research. The unifying theme is the physics of strong interactions. The curriculum is supplemented by complementary skills elements. The APs will support this and sit on the supervisory board, assist to improve and to include generic elements into the training, actively contribute to the training provided in open network training events (summer schools and meeting), accept secondments or internships.

Gunnar Bali (Coordinator) STRONGnet 31 / 46 Outline Teams Management I Research Training Networking Management II Summary

Training elements Research project with secondment to another participant or AP Structured training provided locally (host based) and at central training events HPC training, locally and at two summer schools Generic Skills training in schools, including management (time, people, projects), communication (presentation, public understanding of science), fund raising (grant application, research policy), business skills (commercialisation, IPR, entrepreneurship).

Gunnar Bali (Coordinator) STRONGnet 32 / 46 Outline Teams Management I Research Training Networking Management II Summary

All Fellows have a Personal Career Development Plan (PCDP). The PCDP contains long term career targets and short term objectives and is updated on a yearly basis. In the PCDPs of the four ERs the research project, research supervision and planning of research are more prominent than for the ESRs. The PCDPs for ERs contain a smaller number of structured training elements. The PCDP specifies a mentor (and is discussed with him/her) of a different team. All PCDPs include a secondment phase. All Fellows will present at least one talk per year at a major international conference. Most Fellows have the opportunity to teach to improve their presentation skills and can take local language and other classes. Fellows are involved into the planning of STRONGnet workshops and schools.

Gunnar Bali (Coordinator) STRONGnet 42 / 46 Outline Teams Management I Research Training Networking Management II Summary

The positions were advertized on EURAXESS, latticejobs and spires, with a general call on the STRONGnet webpage. The network started in January while the typical recruitment month is September/October. The network duration is 48 months and most contracts are for 36 months so that we aimed at filling them before month 13. Recruitment is now completed. In view of the above a longer duration or possibility of prolongation/extension in future ITN calls would be good. More freedom in future calls to deviate from the training events outlined in Annex I would be good, e.g., for joint meetings with other ITNs such as LHCPhenoNet, where such opportunities present themselves. Secondments make little sense in the first year of employment. All secondments will take place in 2012. → Gunnar Bali (Coordinator) STRONGnet 43 / 46 Outline Teams Management I Research Training Networking Management II Summary
