Texte sind als Lesetexte immer auch Sehtexte, deren Gesicht aus mehr als nur wort- sprachlichen Zeichen besteht – und gemeint ist das nicht (allein) in dem Sinn, dass seit dem 11. Jahrhundert videre als synonym für Lesen verwendet wurde. Das Thema ist denn auch so weitläufig, dass sich vorab Einschränkungen empfehlen. Zunächst be- schränken sich die im Folgenden aufgeführten und analysierten Beispiele der (äußeren) Gestaltung von Texten auf einen bestimmten kulturellen Raum und konzentrieren sich, abgesehen von kleinen Ausblicken, auf Antike, Mittelalter und Frühe Neuzeit. Ausge- spart bleiben betont nicht-linearen Strukturen etwa aus der chinesischen Schriftkultur .1 Allerdings finden sich Texte mit nicht-linearen Strukturen auch in dem hier untersuch- ten Bereich – man denke allein an die verschiedenen nicht-linearen Vorgaben und Wechsel der Leserichtungen. Ein Beispiel von vielen sind neben Labyrinth-Gedichten2 die Kreuzgedichte des Hrabanus Maurus (um 780-856).3 Ein anderes Beispiel sind die in der Antike nicht ungewöhnlichen Akrosticha, Mesosticha oder Telesticha wie über- haupt Intexte, die unter anderem aufgrund ihrer Nichtlinearität ein verzögertes oder springendes Lesen erforderlich machen.4 Dazu gehören auch Anagramme5 und Palin- 1 Hierzu mit weiteren Literaturhinweisen Vera Dorofeeva-Lichtmann, Spatial Organization of Ancient Chinese Texts (Preliminary Remarks). In: Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphik 19 (1975), S. 135-138, Gustav Leue, 3 auch auf nichttextuellenArtefakte.8 Mitunter erlauben erst sie, einen anonymen Texte einem Verfasser zuzuschreiben (sogenannte Verfasserakrosticha).9 Sie bilden damit einen Teil des Namensiegels seit der antiken Dichtung, mit dem man eine Schrift als eigene kennzeichnet.10 Diogenes Laertius berichtet über Epicharmos, dass er in den Schriften über „Natur, Sittlichkeit und ärztliche Kunst“, die er hinterlassen hat, „meis- tens […] seinen Schriften eine besondere Bemerkung in dichterischer Form beigefügt, daß sie von ihm sind.“11 Köstlich in dieser Hinsicht auch die von ihm erzählte Episode über Herkleidos, die freilich nicht authentisch sein dürfte.12 Bei der Frage nach Vergil Akrosticha in der deutschen Literatur. Dykes Despite Epp's observations (in 1974) that TC (Textual Criticism) and interest in it, was on the decline in America, we are seeing an increase in the popularity of the subject. I am of course, referring to the science of Biblical Textual Criticism. In light of the apparent renewed interest amongst the younger scholars, students, and the laity, I find it advantageous to make certain our corporate understanding of some of the basic terms related to the study. Most of the terms below were chosen because they are often misused. For obvious reasons scholars need to precisely and accurately communicate, we need to adhere to a clear standard! Thus I present these basic definitions of a few IMPORTANT terms. The definitions are related specifically to the task of BIBLICAL TC, they are the typical general definitions, a few are enhanced via my personal research. Some other fields of research may modify these definitions. Abstract In the first chapter of this work, I provide an introduction to the current discussion of scribal habits. In Chapter Two, I discuss Abschriften—or manuscripts with extant known exemplars—, their history in textual criticism, and how they can be used to elucidate the discussion of scribal habits. I also present a methodology for determining if a manuscript is an Abschrift. In Chapter Three, I analyze P127, which is not an Abschrift, in order that we may become familiar with determining scribal habits by singular readings. Chapters Four through Six present the scribal habits of selected proposed manuscript pairs: 0319 and 0320 as direct copies of 06 (with their Latin counterparts VL76 and VL83 as direct copies of VL75), 205 as a direct copy of 2886, and 821 as a direct copy of 0141.

    Rethinking the Western Non-interpolations: A Case For Luke Re-editing His Gospel by Giuseppe Capuana BA (Mus), GradDipEd, BTheol (Hons) A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Philosophy University of Divinity 2018 Abstract This thesis presents a new paradigm for understanding the Western non-interpolations. It argues that when Luke originally wrote his Gospel it did not contain 22:19b–20; 24:3b, 6a, 12, 36b, 40, 51b and 52a. However, at a later time, around the time Luke wrote Acts, he returned to his Gospel creating a second edition which contained these readings. My thesis makes the case that the paradigm of scribal interpolation is problematic. Working under this paradigm the results of external and internal evidence appear conflicting and scholars are generally forced to give greater preference to one set of evidence over the other. However, a balanced weighting of the external and internal evidence points us towards the notion that Luke was responsible for both the absence and the inclusion of 22:19b–20; 24:3b, 6a, 12, 36b, 40, 51b and 52a. Chapter one introduces the Western non-interpolations. It also makes the case that the quest for the original text of Luke’s Gospel should not be abandoned. Chapter two is on the history, theory and methodology of the Western non-interpolations. It begins with an overview of the text-critical scholarship emerging during the nineteenth century, particularly the influence of Brooke Foss Westcott and Fenton John Anthony Hort. It also covers the period after Westcott and Hort to the present.
