I Was Just Thinking...

As we move out of the Tishrei holidays – , Yom Kippur, , Simchat and all the opportunities to gather with friends and community that it affords us, we move into the Hebrew month of Cheshvan, which sadly does not contain any holidays at all. Jewish tradition calls this month, “Mar Cheshvan – The Bitter Month of Cheshvan” as there is no cause for celebrating. While some might enjoy the reprieve of all those holidays, understands that a month without holidays is a bitter month indeed. As we began the New Year, I introduced our Holiday theme of “Patience and the Urgency of Now” as a way of understanding what I believe we need to consider as we start our new year; that while we as appreciate the reward that comes with patiently waiting for God to do God’s work in God’s time, there is an urgency to our human work of building a more perfect world, if not a more perfect union. With the Tishrei holidays behind us, the urgency of now is fully upon us, giving us the time and the chance to make a bitter time, a bit sweeter. I would like to remind you of one of the areas of urgency I highlighted during the holidays; addressing the loneliness epidemic facing our country and our world. In a recent study done by the Cigna Insurance group, they found that: “…nearly half of Americans report sometimes or always feeling alone or left out; twenty-seven percent rarely or never feel as though there are people who really understand them; two in five Americans sometimes or always feel that their relationships are not meaningful and that they are isolated from others; one in five people report they rarely or never feel close to people or feel like there are people they can talk to; only around half of Americans have meaningful in-person social interactions, such as having an extended conversation with a friend or spending quality time with family, on a daily basis; Generation Z (adults ages 18-22) is the loneliest generation and claims to be in worse health than older generations; and that social media use alone is not a predictor of loneliness; respondents defined as very heavy users of social media have a loneliness score (43.5) that is not markedly different from the score of those who never use social media (41.7). The findings reinforce the social nature of humans and the importance of having communities. People who are less lonely are more likely to have regular, meaningful, in-person interactions; are in good overall physical and mental health; have achieved balance in daily activities; and are employed and have good relationships with their coworkers.” Judaism understands from the creation story in Genesis that, “…it is not good for humans to be alone.” God created a second human to be there for the first human so that, in community that could experience the power and joy of living in this world. That was God’s plan all along. Being with others, since that time, is the Jewish way. God has placed in our midst, messengers of hope and healing, the antidote of loneliness – real human connection. A few years back I asked people to just share the following six simple but powerful words to help people feel not so lonely. “I was thinking of you today.” The results were unreal. It really works. That is powerful. That is connection. That is community. As I shared on Rosh Hashanah, if we know how powerful it is to be healed through the connection of community, then, what in the world are we waiting for? Now is the time for the sacred impatience of ending this insidious problem once and for all. We can do this – all of us – because we are a part of a sacred community who, by the very virtue of our namesake – Shalom – can bring the message of hope, healing and connection to others who are in desperate need of this kind of a lifeline better than anyone else. As we prepare for a of Thanksgiving, let this be the year when that for which we are grateful is a message to others and received by others that not only lets them know that we are thinking of them, but that we care about them. Even a little gesture goes a long way. We can’t wait…our very lives depend on it. I pray for a grateful and thoughtful Thanksgiving for you, for me and for us all. Andrew M. Paley [email protected]

President’s Column by Rodney Schlosser

Dear Fellow Congregants, As you know, the Temple plays a special role in life cycle events. Most of these are joyous…births, consecrations, bar/bat , confirmations, graduations, and weddings. The other major circumstance is death and burial. We approach this with the utmost of compassion for the family and respect for the deceased. And, it’s why the task of managing our cemetery needs is so important and so low profile. Beginning a few years ago, we began to pay closer attention to the two Temple Shalom gardens within Sparkman Hillcrest, the long-time cemetery on Northwest Highway at Hillcrest. That has been the official resting place for our members going back to our founding in 1965. Hundreds of members are buried there, and several hundred plots have been purchased on a pre-need basis. By late 2017, we were running out of plots and needed to explore alternatives. In May 2018, Barry Bell, Dorothy Garsson and Mitch Hurwitz agreed to co-chair the Cemetery Committee, and address the question of our future needs. Mark Fishkind, who had previously chaired this committee, provided helpful background. We quickly learned that Sparkman Hillcrest, which also has dedicated gardens for members of Temple Emanu-El and Shearith Israel, no longer has the capacity to partition space for synagogues. “Retail” plots are available, but they do not meet Jewish standards and are 50% more expensive than what a member pays for a spot in our gardens. Over the course of the last year, the Cemetery Committee carefully researched options throughout Dallas and Collin counties, analyzed the trendline of members’ needs, and explored various financing options to fund the purchase of a new garden. After considerable discussion over the summer with the Board and officers, I am pleased to report that Temple Shalom has secured and purchased a new dedicated garden at Restland Cemetery (Greenville Avenue north of LBJ). This is a very dignified property that already has dedicated gardens for Beth Torah, Anshai Torah, and Adat Chaverim. In the coming weeks, Executive Director Steve Lewis will be able to offer members the opportunity to purchase plots at Restland, including multiple adjacent plots. There is no obligation to use Restland’s chapel or burial services, so members can make their own decisions about all aspects of burial. The cost of a plot within the Temple Shalom garden at Restland is anticipated to be only a little more than at Sparkman Hillcrest. We purchased our garden at Sparkman nearly 20 years ago and, of course, real estate costs have escalated over the years. Thank you to Barry, Dorothy, Mitch, Mark, and Steve for their time, sensitivity, and thoroughness in resolving this very important aspect of Temple Shalom.

Tips for Reducing Food Waste During the Holiday Season On the heels of our annual food drive, it’s hard to think about food going to waste knowing some members of our community live with food insecurity. But during the holidays, people throw away 33% more food. Because food scraps go directly to a landfill where they produce methane, they are the most destructive type of household waste in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. And because the average family of four will toss out $1,000 of food each year, there also are financial reasons to be more mindful. Some tips:  Treat all food as valuable, even if it was inexpensive.  Before you shop, scan your refrigerator to avoid redundant purchases. And don’t forget to bring reusable shopping bags!  When dining out, ask for half of your entree boxed before it even reaches the table. This will help you keep your portions in check and ensure you have leftovers to enjoy.  Calculate portions per guest and write out a shopping list with specific amounts of each ingredient.  If there’s more than one host or if you’re organizing a potluck, be diligent about coordinating purchases.  Consider small-plate or self-serve formats so people can help themselves.  Opt for washable dishes and cloth napkins instead of disposable paper and plastic plates, cups and utensils.  Send guests home with leftovers. Bonus points for providing reusable containers!

As of October 27, the Temple Shalom Virtual Food Drive benefitting the North Texas Food Bank raised $2,867.00. Thank you all for your donations.

Thank you to everyone who brought food donations on Yom Kippur for the Jewish Family Service Food Bank. We appreciate the generous donation of reusable bags by Central Market.

Members share their stories...

“When we made our move back to Dallas, we knew that we wanted to be part of the Jewish community here in DFW. It was without a question that we would rejoin as members at Temple Shalom. Not only are the members extremely welcoming and warm but also the staff and clergy treat you like family. Upon our return we were greeted by Rabbi Paley, who just a year later would wed us. We now attend events at the northern satellite as well as the main campus and always look forward to seeing old friends and welcoming new ones. After the birth of our daughter this year, we were so excited for the high holidays to the chance to introduce her to everyone!”
