IThis being the case, we would expect the next act in this Divine drama to be the incep-- tion of the Jewish people, the nation designated to cultivate Divine consciousness and steer humanity back onto the course of living life in God’s presence. The time is seem-- ingly ripe: the stage is set; all the props are in place; there even appears to be a suitable candidate for the protagonist who will serve as the progenitor of this new people: parashat Bereishit ends teasingly with the words, “Noah found favor in the eyes of God.”1 Yet the Torah keeps us in suspense, postponing the genesis of the Jewish people until the next parashah. Evidently, some additional groundwork needs to be laid before the world will be ready for the advent of a chosen people. The detailed description of this groundwork is the subject of Parashat Noachǰȱ ȱȱȱĞȱȱǯȱȱ was the man whom God singled out to build the ark, through which human and animal life would be spared from the Flood that would wipe out the incorrigibly iniquitous hu-- man race, allowing it to begin anew. What was this groundwork? What additional steps had to be taken before the world could begin its upward climb toward the birth of the Jewish people and the giving of the ȱȱȱǵȱȱȱȱǰȱ ȱęȱȱȱȱȱȱȱȱȱ name of this parashah, since, as we have already pointed out, the names of the parashiot disclose their essential message and lesson. The word (in this case, the name) Noach means “rest” and “tranquility.” Yet the events in this parashahȱȱ¢ȱȱȱȱǯȱȱ¢ȱĚȱȱ¢ȱ and indiscriminately destroys all life on earth is certainly the epitome of upheaval and ǰȱȱȱȱ ȱȱęȱȱȱȱparashah: the cursing of Ham and the forced dispersion of humanity from the Tower of Babel. However, if we look at the underlying purpose of these incidents and their ensuing results, we can see that the name Noachȱȱ¢ȱȱęĴǯȱȱ¢¢ȱȱȱ ȱĚȱ¢ȱȱǰȱȱȱ ȱȱȱȱ ȱȱȱȬȱȱ 1. Genesis 6:8. ŮŮ OVERVIEW OF NOACH spiritual state that necessitated it. The antediluvian world was still relatively young, and all forms of life possessed the full vigor of youth—as evinced most strikingly by the ex-- ¢ȱȱ¢ȱȱ£ȱȱǯȱȱȱȱ ȱĴDZȱȱ ȱȱȱǰȱ¢ȱȱĚ¡ǰȱȱDzȱȱ ȱȬ- most impossible for them to change. This was no less true of the spiritual dimension of life than of the physical dimension: once people’s characters were molded and their modes ȱȱǰȱȱ ȱ¡¢ȱĜȱȱȱȱǯȱȱȱȱ norms were all the while becoming increasingly corrupt, the overwhelming majority of humanity became progressively entrenched in a downward spiral of degenerating moral Ĵȱȱǯ ȱȱȱȱǯȱȱĴȱ ȱĞȱȱȱȱ¢ȱ¢Ȭ- ¢ȱȱ¢ǰȱȱ ǰȱȱ¢ȱȱǰȱȱĚ¡ǰȱȱȱȱ change. The “new world” Noah beheld upon emerging from the ark2 was one in which the winds of repentance (teshuvahǼȱ ȱ ȱ¢ǰȱȱȱǰȱȱĴȱ ȱ chronically unwholesome their behavior might become. ǰȱ ȱ ȱȱĞȱȱǰȱȃȱȱ ȱȱȱȱĚȱȱ ȱ destroy the earth,”3 He was not reconciling Himself to people continuing to sin as they ȱǰȱȱ ȱ ȱĴȱȱ¢ȱĚȱȱǰȱ ȱȱȱȱȱȱ ȱȱ ȱ ȱȱȱǯȱǰȱ ȱ ȱ¢ȱȱ¢ȱĚȱȱ earth, He altered reality in such a way that it would never again become necessary to bring ȱȱĚȯȱȱȂȱȱȱȱȱȱĴǰȱȱȱ ȱȱ now provided them with a novel mechanism that they could use to counteract and even ȱȱěȱȱȱǯȱ ȱǰȱȱȱ ȱȱ¢ȱęȱȱȱȱ ȱȱȱȱ of Creation, namely, promoting and disseminating Divine consciousness in the world until it ultimately would be transformed into God’s natural home. It was therefore also a crucial step in laying the groundwork for the genesis of the Jewish people. The mes-- sage of hope that the Torah is supposed to convey to the world is that it is never too late; that God is always waiting to welcome us back with open arms; and that we can always ȱ ǰȱȱȱȱȱęȱȱȱȱ ȱȱȱ ȱȱȱ imaginable. The lesson of this parashah remains perennially pertinent to our lives. When we are confronted with a particularly trying situation or turbulent phase in our lives, it would ȱȱ ȱȱȱǰȱȱȱȱǰȱȱȱȱȱȱȱęȱǯȱ¢ȱ ȱȱ¡ȱȱǰȱ ȱȱȱȱȱȱȱȱȱȱĚ Ȭ- ters but rather resolutely stood his ground, we can not only come away unscathed from ȱȱȱȱȱȱȱȱȱȱęȱȱ ȱǰȱȱȬ- ing strengthened. By focusing on the opportunity inherent in the challenge rather than ȱȱęȱĜ¢ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱȱǰȱ ȱȱȱȱ Ě ȱȱȃȱ ȱȱȄ4—the waters of tranquility and rest. And if, as was Noah, we are wise enough to use the experience advantageously, we can thereby help transform the whole world into an environment more conducive to Di-- ȱǰȱȱȱȱȱȱȱȱȱȱęǯ5 2. The Shem MiShmuel finds several aspects about this incident puzzling. Why did Yaakov tell Esav, “I had an ox and a donkey in the house of Lavan?” Additionally, since he was met by the angels of Israel while the angels of Chutz L’aaretz were still with him, he selected angels from both groups to go to Esav. Why did he need both types of angels and what was the difference between them? The Shem MiShmuel explains that there are seven inhabited continents that comprise the world. The land of Israel is at the center with three continents on each side. Shabbat, similarly, is the focal point of the week. We prepare for Shabbat during the three days that precede it, and we bask in the glow of the previous Shabbat for the three days that follow. The Gemara says there are weekday angels and Shabbat angels. The Shabbat angels correspond to Eretz Yisrael, and the weekday angels relate to the other six continents. The midrash on Breishit discusses a disagreement about the day on which G-d created angels. Rabbi Yochanan maintains that they were created on the second day, while Rabbi Chanina states that they were created on the fifth day. The Shem Mishmuel suggests that both opinions are correct.

Our Torah portion for this week is Parashat Vayishlach, in which we read about the journeys of our patriarch Jacob and his family after Jacob completes his service for Laban, his father-in-law. G-d commands Jacob to return to the home from which he fled many years before just after stealing his older brother Esau’s birthright as the first-born son of Isaac and Rebecca. Jacob and his family’s return will necessitate at the very least a meeting between Jacob and Esau, if not also a confrontation, since the two brothers had not seen each other since Jacob’s deception of their father robbed Esau of many privileges including the top spot in the family. Understandably, Jacob is afraid to face Esau and his anger. Jacob sends ahead a messenger to Esau to let him know of his return and learns that Esau is coming to meet him, along with 400 men. This exacerbates Jacob’s fear. He divides his family into two camps, with the hope that one will survive should Esau and the men attack. Bravely, Jacob plans to stand in front of his camp to lead them forward, but he doesn’t want to take it on the chin unless he absolutely has to. Before the brothers will meet, Jacob arranges for several messengers to greet Esau and appease him with many generous gifts. Jacob’s planning done for the big reunion ahead, he settles down to sleep for the night. In that sleep, what dreams may come. All night and near into the dawn, Jacob wrestles with a man who may just be an angel.

    When Feeling Trapped: Torah Reflections on Parashat Shemot Exodus 1:1 – 6:1 I have noticed that my prayer life often becomes richer when my life becomes more challenging. When things are going well with me, it’s easy for my heart to close to both the uncertainty and the possibility of the present moment. I start to believe that I’m in control of my life, and that I don’t need anyone’s help -- least of all, God’s. The first time I really prayed the Psalms I was on the bus, headed to the doctor’s office for a biopsy. My partner was pregnant with our son, and the prospect of dealing with a serious illness at the same time that I was about to become a parent felt like falling off a cliff and not knowing if I’d crash into the rocks or if a parachute would open so I could float to a gentle landing. That time, it was the parachute. But before I knew that, my heart opened to God in a way it never had before. There’s an ancient teaching about our ancestors, Abraham and Sarah that tries to explain why they were childless until their old age. It says that “the Holy One longs to hear the prayers of the righteous.” As long as Abraham and Sarah yearned for a child together, they called out for God’s help and needed God to answer. There’s a subtle but important difference between believing in a God who makes people suffer as a way of entering into relationship (which I don’t) and being aware of the ways that suffering and longing can draw us near to God (which I try to be).

Over the 40 weeks, a spinal cord, nerves, muscles, a torso, legs, and arms develop, along with all of the body’s organs. Throughout the term, all aspects of the baby grow and change. By the time the baby is born, it has changed from one single cell that weighed less than an ounce to 26 billion cells and weighs 8 pounds. At the same time as the baby is growing the woman is changing. Her body changes by adjusting to the new life within. She may have added some weight, show a baby bump, etc. She may also have emotional changes. Many women are more sensitive during their pregnancy than other times. Maybe she had other medical changes like gestational diabetes. Whatever changes a woman experiences, she will need to adjust to during this period in her life and again after the birth as her body returns to its “normal” state.

    PARSHAT VAYIGASH JANUARY 7, 2017 RABBI VERNON KURTZ The custom to complete the weekly public readings of the Torah every year on the holiday of Simchat Torah finds its roots in Babylonia of the Talmudic Era. The Torah was divided into 54 sections or Parshiyot to allow for the completion of the yearly cycle with the reading of one Parshah every week. This week’s Torah portion, Vayigash, follows the story immediately told in last week’s Miketz. But, the Rabbis seem to be enamored with the old-time serial movies or the modern-day soap operas by leaving us last week with a cliff-hanger of a story and asking us to wait a week to complete it. Last week, towards the end of our Torah reading, the divining cup of the Viceroy of Egypt, Joseph, is found in the food sack of Benjamin. We know that it was a set-up by Joseph as he had instructed his servants to bring Benjamin back to Egypt and send the other brothers on their way to Canaan. The brothers refuse to leave the side of their young brother and are all brought back to stand before Joseph. At that point, the Torah reading last week ends and we are left on the edge of our seats to find out what happened. If this was a mystery novel many of us would not put it down until we knew what had occurred or we would look at the end of the book to find out what happened. Rabbi Zev Leff asks: “Why did the previous Parshah have to end with such a cliff- hanger? Why didn’t the Torah simply extend Parshat Miketz a few more verses and include the resolution of this story?     Parashat Vaera 5774 By Rachel Farbiarz December 28, 2013 Parashat Vaera continues the conversation between God and Moses following Moses’s first encounter with Pharaoh. God persists in his alternately tender and impatient wooing of the reluctant emissary, while Moses insists that he is unfit for the task. As before, Moses’s feelings of inadequacy center on his difficulty with speech, now captured, ironically, by his poetic lament: “I am uncircumcised of lips.” 1 The Torah does not identify the nature or origins of Moses’s difficulty. Rashi postulates that Moses had an actual speech impediment—perhaps a stutter or a severe lisp. 2 A midrash explains that Moses’s impeded speech dated from infancy when the angel Gabriel had guided him to place a hot coal in his mouth. 3 Perhaps Moses was deeply shy, a shepherd who preferred the company of animals over people with their insatiable demand for words. Lending further obscurity, Moses’s impediment is wholly self-described. We learn of it only through his own protests at having been chosen as Israel’s liberator. Whereas the omniscient biblical narrator provides the descriptions of its other central characters, 4 it is silent on Moses’s “heavy-mouthed and heavy-tongued” 5 condition. The absence of this narrative corroboration implies that Moses’s impediment loomed larger in his own mind than as a handicap perceptible to others. Whatever the impediment’s nature, it is clear that each utterance exacted a painful toll on Moses. God therefore sends Aaron to be his brother’s mouthpiece, and Aaron remains at Moses’s side as the two heap threats and plagues upon Pharaoh and the Egyptians.

Hashem said to Moshe: “Come to Pharaoh…!”0F The Hebrew Pharaoh” is usually translated “Go to Pharaoh,” But “Bo” means “come,” not “go.” The Zohar explains why Hashem tells Moshe “Come” rather than “go” to Pharaoh. Rabbi Shimeon said: Now it is time to reveal secrets that are bound above and below. Why does it say, “Come to Pharaoh”?
