THE MIDDAH OF SODOM By Rabbinic Intern Yair Lichtman The Mishna in Avot (5:10) presents a confounding dispute. In describing a variety of attitudes that one can have with regard to their money, the Mishna states: האומר שלי שלי ושלך שלך זו מדה בינונית ויש אומרים זו מדת סדום “One who says, ‘what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is yours”: this is an average attribute. Some say that this is the attribute of Sodom.” How can it be that some sages view this personality type as moderate, while others see it as thoroughly wicked, reminiscent of Sodom, a society so corrupt that it was unable to furnish a mere ten righteous people to justify its existence? Moreover, why precisely is this trait viewed as “the attribute of Sodom”? Surely it’s fair that each of us is entitled to our own property and not to others’! The commentators on this Mishna take two general approaches in explaining the apparent dispute. Rabbi Yisrael Hofstein, in his Avodat Yisrael, (1737-1814) and others argue that the appearance of debate is misleading. In truth, all agree that the respect for personal property is appropriate in business relationships. At the same time, all agree that our obligations of charity and generosity to the poor and disadvantaged demand that we give of ourselves to those who don’t deserve it. Others, like Rabbi Yisrael Lifschitz, see the two in a chronological progression. Financial independence and treating others fairly are not, in and of themselves, evils. But they can very easily become them. By neither giving nor taking from others, the bonds that hold us together weaken, and cruelty inevitably results. attitude in their commercial lives, while avoiding the pitfalls of שלי שלי ושלך שלך It may be that one can maintain a miserliness and cruelty. But this Mishna reminds us that the line between fairness and cruelty is a fine one, and we toe it at our own peril. Our Parasha reminds us as well that our nature is fundamentally opposed to that of Sodom. In contrast to their cruelty, we are told of Avraham that (Bereishit 18:19) “he will command his children and his household after him to keep the way of God, to practice righteousness and justice.” Righteous and justice, Tzedakah and Mishpat, are the hallmarks of our national identity, and provide a powerful antidote to the Middah of Sodom. Answering the Call Vayera 5781 Te early history of humanity is set out in the Torah as a series of disappointments. God gave human beings freedom, which they then misused. Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. Cain murdered Abel. Within a relatively short time, the world before the Flood became dominated by violence. All fesh perverted its way on the earth. God created order, but humans created chaos. Even afer the Flood, humanity, in the form of the builders of Babel, were guilty of hubris, thinking that people could build a tower that “reaches heaven" (Gen. 11:4). Humans failed to respond to God, which is where Abraham enters the picture. We are not quite sure, at the beginning, what it is that Abraham is summoned to do. We know he is commanded to leave his land, birthplace and father’s house and travel “to the land I will show you,” (Gen. 12:1) but what he is to do when he gets there, we do not know. On this the Torah is silent. What is Abraham’s mission? What makes him special? What makes him more than a good man in a bad age, as was Noah? What makes him a leader and the father of a nation of leaders? To decode the mystery we have to recall what the Torah has been signalling prior to this point. I suggested in previous weeks that a - perhaps the - key theme is a failure of responsibility. Adam and Eve lack personal responsibility. Adam says, “It wasn’t me; it was the woman.” Eve says, “It wasn’t me, it was the serpent.” It is as if they deny being the authors of their own stories – as if they do not understand either freedom or the responsibility it entails.     Negotiations With God A D’var Torah on Parashat Vayeira (Gen. 18:1 – 22:24) By Arnold Shugarman “Vayeira eilav Adonai b’eiloney mam’rei.” “Adonai appeared to him near the terebinths of Mamre.” The story of Abraham and Sarah continues. Three men (angels of God) approach Abraham’s tent. Abraham extends his hospitality to the strangers. One of the strangers tells Abraham that Sarah, already 90 years old, will have a son. Sarah overhears the conversation and laughs at this idea. The three men leave for Sodom. God tells Abraham that Sodom and Gomorrah will be destroyed because of the wickedness of the inhabitants. Abraham pleads with God to save the people, but to no avail. Two of the angels come to Sodom and are greeted by Lot who offers his hospitality to them at significant risk to his life. The angels tell Lot and his family of the impending destruction of the cities and urge them to leave. The angels warn them not to look back when they flee Sodom. Lot’s wife disobeys the warning and is turned into a pillar of salt. Abraham and Sarah travel to Gerar. Abraham introduces Sarah as his sister, and King Abimelech has her brought to him. God intervenes; King Abimelech restores Sarah to Abraham and, in penance, provides Abraham with riches. Sarah becomes pregnant as God promised and gives birth to Isaac, who is circumcised on the eighth day following his birth. Later, Sarah demands that Abraham send Hagar and Ishmael, Abraham’s son, away so that Isaac would be the sole beneficiary of Abraham’s possessions.

    Parshah Vayeira • Parshah Vayeira is the fourth parshah in the Torah. The text of this parshah is Genesis 18:1- 22:24. • We begin reading “And the LORD appeared unto him by the terebinths of Mamre, as he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day...” The parshah is named vayeira after the first distinct word of this parshah which means “and [He] appeared.” • This parshah can be broken into the following segments: appearance of the angels; Abraham’s plea for the cities; Lot and the visitors; destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and Lot and his daughters; Abimelech; Isaac and Ishmael; covenant with Abimelech; akeidah, and Nahor’s descendants. • While God spoke to Abraham, three strangers appeared. Abraham received them with great hospitality. God tells him that Sarah will shortly bear a son, and Sarah, overhearing, laughed and said: “After I have become worn out, will I have smooth flesh? And also, my master is old.” • God told Abraham that he will punish Sodom and Gomorrah, “since the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah has become great, and since their sin has become very grave.” The three strangers departed from Abraham heading toward Sodom. • Abraham protests that it is not just to “destroy the righteous with the wicked.” Abraham asked God if He would spare the cities if 50, 45, 40, 30, 20, and finally if even ten righteous men are found there.     Religious Certainty and Religious Liberty Shabbat Vayeira 5781 November 6, 2020 Rabbi Barry H. Block This week, the Supreme Court heard a case filed by Catholic Social Services against the City of Philadelphia. The city has barred Catholic Social Services from participating in its foster care program, because it discriminates against some married couples who seek to be foster parents. I refer, of course, to same-sex couples. Justice Amy Coney Barrett asked a pointed question: Could the city refuse to partner with an agency that would not work with other married couples, for example, on religious grounds that oppose interracial marriage. A U.S. Justice Department attorney answered “that ‘there’s a particularly compelling interest in eradicating racial discrimination.’ Justice Elena Kagan pressed [the same attorney] to say whether the eradication of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation was also a compelling state interest. [Speaking on behalf of the current Administration,] He said[: …] ‘we haven’t taken a position on that question.’”i Justice Kagan worded her question carefully. The Federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which our Reform Jewish Movement worked hard to adopt, protects the free exercise of religion unless a “compelling state interest” overrides religious liberty. I’m reminded of a conversation with a colleague a few years ago, after I had written in support of religious liberty. He urged me to change the term “liberty” to “freedom.” The two are synonyms in my dictionary, but my friend argued that “religious liberty” has come to mean the right to discriminate on the basis of one’s religious convictions.

    LIVING WITH THE PARSHAH 5780, PARSHAS VAEIRA By HARAV YAAKOV FEITMAN, KEHILLAS BAIS YEHUDAH TZVI We still have several months to Pesach, but we are already laining and learning the Parshiyos about Yetzias Mitzrayim. To be sure, there are two separate mitzvos to remember the exodus. One is only on Pesach, the other is every single day of the year. Rav Yechezkel Levenstein zt”l (Ohr Yechezkel 7:289) demonstrates that one of the major lessons to be remembered daily from the story of Yetzias Mitzrayim may be gleaned from this week’s Sedra. He quotes the Alter of Kelm (Bais Kelm, page 93) that Paroh had ample opportunity from the very beginning to realize that Hashem is not only the Creator of the universe, but that His hashgacha --- active running of the world – is manifest if we only take the trouble to notice. Paroh’s response to Moshe and Aharon’s demand that he let Klal Yisrael go free is the arrogant rejection “who is Hashem that I should listen to His voice?” Now, Paroh should have immediately taken note that something strange and powerful was happening in Egypt for the very first time. Paroh was the despot and absolute dictator of the vast Egyptian empire, which was the major force in the Middle East, indeed the world at that time. We can imagine that there were countless public officials and politicians under him and guarding his palace. No outsider was allowed access, let alone free and uninhibited entry to the Pharaoh. Yet, all of a sudden Moshe and Aharon virtually walk in, with no visible struggle or effort.

We gathered in the gym where there were 12 stations, one station for each Parsha. Each station had a wonderful hands-on activity for the children to do related to that specific Parsha.
