  • Shabbat-B'shabbato – Parshat Behaalotecha No 1577: 19 Sivan 5775 (6 June 2015)
Shabbat-B'Shabbato – Parshat Behaalotecha No 1577: 19 Sivan 5775 (6 June 2015) AS SHABBAT APPROACHES Testimony for All of Humanity - by Rabbi Oury Cherki, Machon Meir, Rabbi of Beit Yehuda Congregation, Jerusalem This week's Haftarah begins with the return of the Shechina – the holy Presence – to Zion and with the significance of this process for mankind: "Sing and be happy, daughter of Zion, for I am coming, and I will dwell within you – this is what G-d says. And many nations will join together with G-d on that day." [Zecharia 2:14-15]. The end of the Haftarah describes the Shechina as an image of a Menorah, similar to the one in the Temple. The proximity of the two images is taken by the sages as proof that the Menorah will serve as testimony for all of humanity that the Shechina dwells within Bnei Yisrael. It is true that the Menorah is placed outside of the Holy of Holies, such that at first glance it would seem that it is at a lower level of sanctity than the Ark of the Covenant, where the Torah is kept. This corresponds to the notion that the nation of Yisrael, including the appearance of the Shechina within it, is of minor importance when compared to the Torah. However, Rav Kook explains that this is only true from an external point of view, but that from an internal viewpoint – since the Torah was given for the sake of Yisrael and Yisrael preceded the Torah – the Menorah is indeed holier than the Ark.

Parshat Shelach 26 Sivan 5779 /June 29, 2019 Daf Yomi: Erchin 13; Nach Yomi: Mishlei 19 Mevorchim HaChodesh Tammuz Weekly Dvar Torah A project of the NATIONAL COUNCIL OF YOUNG ISRAEL SPONSORED BY THE HENRY, BERTHA AND EDWARD ROTHMAN FOUNDATION ROCHESTER, NY,CLEVELAND, OHIO, CIRCLEVILLE, OHIO Fleeing from Fame Brings Respite from Reproach Rabbi Dovid Sochet Associate Member, Young Israel Council of Rabbis This week's parsha relates the mission of the twelve meraglim - spies or scouts - who were sent to scout the land of Cana'an before the Jewish nation entered it. When they returned from their reconnaissance, ten of the meraglim reported that the people would not be able to conquer the land. Only two of those sent - Yehoshua and Caleiv - insisted that Israel would prevail against the Cananites. How were those two able to withstand the pressure of the other meraglim and act independently? Rashi cites a medrash which says that when “Moshe called Hoshea bin Nun, Yehoshua" (Bamidbar 13:16) he was praying that Yehoshua should not be influenced by the evil plans of the other meraglim. The name change implies (as Rashi notes) this prayer. “May Hashem (Yud-Hay) save you from the plot of the Spies." The Targum Yonasan (See Tractate Megillah 3A where the Gemarah attributes its authorship to Reb Yonasan ben Uziel. Its overall style is very similar to that of Targum Onkelos, though at times it seems to be a looser paraphrase.) adds: "When Moshe saw his extreme humility, he called Hoshea bin Nun, Yehoshua." Caleiv, however, managed, on his own, that is without Moshe interceding on his behalf, to withstand the mergalim's scheme.

  • Parashat Vayetze 5774 by Rabbi Joshua Rabin November 9, 2013
Parashat Vayetze 5774 By Rabbi Joshua Rabin November 9, 2013 Bill Drayton, founder and CEO of Ashoka, an organization that provides financial and organizational support to social entrepreneurs around the world, says that when Ashoka attempts to identify individuals to support, he asks his colleagues, “Do you deeply trust this person?” 1 Explaining the rationale behind this question, Drayton states, ...to cause fundamental social change, you are asking people to change how they do their work, how they relate to other people. You’re asking a lot of them. And if they don’t trust you, your probability of success is greatly reduced. The trustworthiness of the social entrepreneur—their integrity—is one of their most important assets. People sense that—and if they don’t trust you, they won’t follow you. They won’t make those leaps in their own lives that are necessary. 2 According to Drayton, making systemic social change requires a commitment to personal integrity. As a rabbi, I cannot read this quote without thinking about the tension I experience between wanting to fulfill the prophetic obligation to speak out against injustice and the reality that I am not perfect, that I possess more than few moral shortcomings. At the same time, the necessity of speaking out against injustice leads me to recognize that my commitment to social change requires a continual commitment to questioning my own moral compass and to balancing healthy doses of both hope and reality. The challenge of examining our moral choices and recognizing our successes and failures is reflected in several commentaries on the beginning of Parashat Vayetze .

  • The Opening Section of Parashat Vayetze Tells of Yaakov's Famous
The opening section of Parashat Vayetze tells of Yaakov's famous prophecy that he beheld as he slept in Bet-El, along his flight to Charan to escape from his brother's rage. In this prophecy God promises that the Land of Canaan would be given to him and his offspring, and He also declares the famous promise, "Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth" (28:14). Maimonides cites this verse in his Epistle to Yemen (chapter 1), and he explains the metaphor as referring not to the innumerability of Yaakov's descendants, but rather to their eternal existence. In this verse, God foresees the time when Yaakov's descendants will be treaded and trampled upon like the earth, subjected to ruthless oppression, persecution and tyranny. But just as the earth survives the incessant trampling of man, and in fact sees the day when the men who treaded upon it are interred for eternity beneath its surface, so will Am Yisrael somehow endure the centuries of degradation and suffering. We have been promised that, like the earth beneath our feet, the years of "treading" will not destroy us, and we will survive even as our oppressors are "buried" beneath us. Maimonides wrote these remarks in an effort to lift the emotional and religious spirits of the Yemenite Jews who came under harsh persecution and relentless challenges to their faith. He insisted that contrary to what the enemy nations charged, the Jews' feeble condition at that time in no way disproved the theological truth of their beliefs or foretold their imminent demise.

  • Bais Havaad on the Parsha, Parshas Eikev,Bais Havaad on the Parsha
Bais HaVaad on the Parsha, Parshas Ha’azinu Good Condition Excerpted and adapted from a shiur by Dayan Yehoshua Grunwald September 17, 2021 https://baishavaad.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/DEV81_010_Haazinu_Legal_Owner _Giving_and_Owning_Your_Daled_Minim.mp3 On the first two days of Sukkos, one must own the arba’ah minim in order to fulfill the mitzvah of taking them. Those who do not own their own arba’ah minim generally use someone else’s set via matanah al menas lehachzir (giving a gift on the condition that it is returned afterward). But it is not clear whether tenai kaful (a double condition, i.e., where both the “if” and “if not” possibilities are expressed), which is necessary for conditions in other areas of halacha, is required here. According to the Smag, one must make a tenai kaful when giving a matanah al menas lehachzir for arba’ah minim. The Mordechai disagrees and notes that Rishonim debate whether a tenai kaful is necessary for conditions outside of gittin and kidushin (such as for mamonos). The Mordechai states that the halacha follows the Rashbam that it is unnecessary for mamonos. The Bais Yosef (O.C. 658) cites this machlokes and rules that we follow the Mordechai with regard to arba’ah minim. Although the Bais Yosef elsewhere (E.H. 38) cites both opinions and does not rule definitively like the Rashbam, the case of esrog may be more lenient for a number of reasons. These include the fact that perhaps there is a clear umdena that one wants the tenai to be valid even without the tenai kaful (Tosafos Kidushin 6b); tenai kaful may be unnecessary for metaltelin (Nesivos Hamishpat C.M.
