How big is the problem?

• 1/3 of US mislabeled (Natl Geographic 2014)

• 1/3 of sampled from 650 retail stores in 21 states was mislabeled (Oceana report 2012)

• “Bait and switch, how seafood fraud hurts our oceans, our wallets and our health” (Oceana report, 2011)

Why does this happen? • Most seafood consumed in US is imported (85%) • Inspection Frequency • “Not a public health issue” • Increasing Seafood Consumption • High Value of Product • Availability vs. Demand (i.e. there are no “seasons”) • Public Awareness and “Ignorance” • $$$ Types of Economic Fraud in Seafood (both intentional and accidental)
