Clean & Unclean Meats God expects all who desire to have a relationship with Him to live holy lives (Exodus 19:6; 1 Peter 1:15). The Bible says following God’s instructions regarding the meat we eat is one aspect of living a holy life (Leviticus 11:44-47). WILD | NATURA L | SUSTAINABLE SUJIKO The cold, clean waters of Alaska provide a healthy, natural habitat for the five species of wild Alaska salmon. Each year, this e e raditional Japanese sujiko features salted and cured Alaska salmon roe within L e v e T the natural membrane or film (in-sac). Eat fish – Health experts recommend that women eat 8-12 ounces/week (weight before cooking) of fish. Children, ages 2-6, should eat at least 2 ounces/week. As a reference, 3 ounces of fish is about the size of a deck of cards. Women that eat fish which contains omega-3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA) will pass these nutrients to their babies and support healthy brain and eye development. Best Choices: Eating six ounces/week of the following fish provides the recommended amounts of healthy fats and will minimize your baby’s exposure to pollutants: salmon (wild or farm-raised), rainbow trout (farm-raised), herring, mackerel (Atlantic, Jack, chub), sardine, shad (American), whitefish. 2. Before eating recreationally-caught fish, check our Fish4Health website below for your State’s fish consumption advisory and avoid eating fish that is heavily contaminated with pollutants. If a fish that you caught is not listed in the advisory, then eat no more than 1 meal per month. If you are unsure about the safety of the fish that you caught, be safe - ‘catch-and-release’. 3. Minimize your exposure to pollutants in commercial fish - follow the advice given below. (Ex: If you eat 4 ounces of albacore tuna, then don’t eat any other fish from this category until the following week.) Indiana Division of Fish & Wildlife’s Animal Information Series Paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) Do they have any other names? Paddlefish are also called spoonbill, spoonbill cat, shovelnose cat, and boneless cat. Why are they called paddlefish? They are called paddlefish because of their paddle-like nose. Polyodon is Greek for “many tooth” in reference to the numerous long gill rakers and spathula is Latin for “spatula” or “blade.” What do they look like? Paddlefish are shark-like fish with long, paddle-shaped snouts. They have large mouths, without teeth, that are located far back on the underside of the head. Paddlefish have many gill rakers (filaments used to filter food from the water) that are long and slender. The eyes are small and just above the front edge of the mouth. The rear margin of the gill cover is long and pointed into a fleshy flap. The tail is deeply lobed with the upper lobe longer than the lower lobe. The skin is without scales and the skeleton is made of cartilage. Paddlefish are bluish-gray to black on the upper parts and light gray to white on the belly. Photo Credit: Duane Raver, USFWS Where do they live in Indiana? Paddlefish are rare to occasional in Indiana and they live in large rivers. What kind of habitat do they need? A paddlefish needs very specific habitat conditions to meet its needs. During most of its life it lives in quiet or slow-flowing waters rich in the microscopic life (zooplankton) on which it feeds. However, it must have access to a large, free-flowing river with gravel bars that flood frequently during its spawning season. -

The Benefits of Fish Fish is a protein-rich food that is healthy for both children and adults. Besides being low in saturated fat, fish also contains a good type of fat (omega -3 fatty acids) and nutrients such as Vitamin D.(1)(3) For Moms and Children While fish in general may be a healthy food, certain fish can contain high levels of mercury which can have a serious effect on an unborn or young child’s developing nervous system (1)(3). Avoiding fish that are high in mercury is important for young children and pregnant or breastfeeding women. (1)(2)(3). Don’t Eat… Avoid these fish that are high in Mercury (2): Swordfish Shark Bluefish* Orange Roughy King Mackerel Walleye (Great Lakes) Striped Bass* Tuna (fresh or frozen) Tilefish (Gulf of Mexico) Spanish Mackerel (Gulf of Mexico) *These fish are known to contain high levels of PCB’s (Polychlorinated biphenyls) Amounts to Eat For pregnant and breastfeeding women, the 2010 Dietary Guidelines recommend at least 8 and up to 12 ounces per week of cooked seafood considered to be low or moderate in mercury. Young children should eat less than 8 ounces per week of cooked fish in the lowest mercury category (1)(3). Safe Weekly Amounts of Mercury in Fish
Safe weekly amounts of mercury in fish Florida testing for mercury in a variety of fish is helpful for calculating the amount of seafood a person can eat, and still stay within the EPA Reference Dose for mercury – the amount of mercury a person can consume on a continuing basis without fear of ill effects. Safe amounts of fish are calculated by weekly doses. Amounts are cumulative; each meal must be counted against the weekly reference dose. Mercury amounts vary from fish to fish, and the averages below should serve only as guidelines. How to use the chart When calculating weekly allowances of fish, refer to the box closest to your weight and see the safe amount in ounces (a typical serving of fish is about 6 ounces). For instance, if you weigh 150 pounds you should limit yourself to 4.6 ounces per week of Red Grouper. For Snook you could eat no more than 4.2 ounces per week. To eat more than one kind of fish or more than one fish meal per week, you would want to select species with high allowances, such as mullet (72.4 ounces per week) or sand bream (22.4 ounces).
