TERMS & DEFINITIONS

: Women who experience sexual, romantic, emotional, physical and/or spiritual attraction to some other women. Not all women who engage in same sexual behavior identify as lesbian, and as such this label should be used with caution. • : 1. Men who experience sexual, romantic, emotional, physical and/or spiritual attraction to some other men. Not all men who engage in same gender sexual behavior identify as gay, and as such this label should be used with caution. 2. An umbrella term for sexual orientations that fall outside of straight/heterosexual. • Bisexual: A person who experiences sexual, romantic, emotional, physical and/or spiritual attraction to some people of their same gender as well as some other , not necessarily at the same time, in the same ways or to the same degree. • Trans/ : An umbrella term describing a wide range of identities of people whose and/or expression differs from expectations based on their assigned at birth. • Queer: 1. An umbrella term which includes , , bisexual people, trans people, people, radical sex communities and many other radically transgressive communities. 2. Sometimes used as a label or gender identity label used to denote a non-heterosexual or identity without having to define specifics. 3. A reclaimed word that was formally used as a slur but has been reclaimed by some as a term of and political ideology. • Questioning: A person who is unsure of and/or exploring- in thoughts and/or in actions- their gender identity and/or sexual orientation. • Intersex Person(s): Individual(s) born with physical sex markers (genitals, hormones, ) that don’t fit neatly into our socialized understanding of sex markers. • Asexual: A person who does not experience . They may or may not experience emotional, physical, or romantic attraction. differs from in that it is a sexual orientation, not a choice. People who are asexual may call themselves “ace” • Pansexual: An identity for people who may experience sexual, romantic, emotional, physical and/or spiritual attraction to some people of all genders and/or gender expressions. • Cisgender: An identity for people who feel mostly comfortable with the gender identity assigned to them at birth. • Heterosexual: Women who experience sexual, romantic, physical and/or spiritual attraction to some men; Men who experience sexual, romantic, physical and/or spiritual attraction to some women. Also referred to as “straight” • Genderqueer: An individual whose gender identity is neither male nor , is between or beyond genders, or is some combination of genders. Sometimes this includes a political agenda to challenge gender and the system. TERMS & DEFINITIONS (CONT’D)

• Nonbinary/Gender Nonbinary: A gender identity for people whose experience with gender does not fit exclusively, or at all, into the socialized binary system of /. • Gender Nonconforming: An identity for people whose expression and experience with gender does not conform to socialized norms of binary presentation (ie men dressing x way, women dressing x way).
