Brazil was at the front of this progression and by the early 2000’s, scholars believed Brazil was poised to emerge as Latin America’s gay rights champion. Despite some advancements, the image of Brazil as a gay rights champion is nebulous. The Brazilian Congress has failed in passing federal legislation protecting sexual minorities from violence and discrimination and this thesis seeks to answer why. Qualitative interviews were conducted with LGBT activists, political aides, politicians and Evangelical Pastors. Ultimately this thesis argues that Brazil does not have LGBT anti- discrimination policy because of two factors: 1) a weakening LGBT social movement and 2) a strong countermovement to LGBT rights. iii Acknowledgements Thanks is offered to numerous people upon the completion of this thesis. An Amazing 1969 Account of the Stonewall Uprising GARANCE FRANKE- RUTA THE ATLANTIC JAN 24, 2013 Despite progress, the circumstances that gave rise to the rebellion that began the contemporary gay rights movement haven't changed as much as we might think. When President Obama briefly mentioned Stonewall during his Inaugural address, it prompted a lot of chatter about of the Stonewall riot and his historic adoption of the gay rights cause as his own. But what happened at the Stonewall Inn, really? New York papers tend to call it the Stonewall uprising, not the Stonewall riot, because it played out as six days of skirmishes between young gay, lesbian, and transgender individuals and the New York Police Department in the wake of a police raid of the Christopher Street bar in Manhattan's West Village. The raid came amid a broader police crackdown on gay bars for operating without N. Y. State Liquor Authority licenses, which was something they did only because the SLA refused to grant bars that served gays licenses, forcing them to operate as illegal saloons. Into that void stepped opportunists and Mafia affiliates, who ran the unlicensed establishments and reputedly had deals with the police to stay in business. But on the night of June 27, 1969, a police raid on the Stonewall involving the arrests of 13 people inside the bar met unexpected resistance when a crowd gathered and one of those arrested, a woman, cried out to the assembled bystanders as she was shoved into a paddy wagon, "Why don't you guys do something!" The conflict over the next six days played out as a very gay variant of a classic New York street rebellion. -

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Although students attracted to others of the same sex had developed semi-private meeting places and informal social networks at many colleges and universities since at least the early twentieth century, the first formally recognized gay student organizations were not established until the late 1960s. But the success of these early groups, along with the inspiration provided by other college-based movements and the Stonewall riots, led to the proliferation of gay liberation fronts on campuses across the country by the early 1970s. At many colleges and universities, these organizations were male-dominated, prompting lesbians to demand greater inclusion and often to form their own groups. In the 1980s and 1990s, bisexual and transgender students likewise sought recognition, both within and separate from lesbian and gay organizations. At the same time, high school and junior high school students have begun to organize Gay- Straight Alliances, enabling even younger glbtq people to find support and better advocate for their needs. Early Student Groups The first student gay rights organization, the Student Homophile League, was formally established at Columbia University by Stephen Donaldson (born Robert Martin) in 1967. Donaldson had been involved in the New York City chapter of the Mattachine Society, but when he arrived at Columbia, he could not find any other openly glbtq people and was forced by school administrators to move out of his residence hall after his roommates complained about living with a bisexual man. -

August 2020 From Archival Silence to Screaming Queens: Reconstructing the Compton’s Cafeteria Riot By Isaac Fellman & Susan Stryker On an August evening in 1966, three years before the Stonewall riots in New York City, the patrons of the Compton’s Cafeteria on Taylor and Turk Streets in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district fought back against police harassment. Little documentary evidence survives of this key moment in transgender history. The photograph above from the GLBT Historical Society’s archives is an extremely rare still of the interior of the Compton’s location in question, and the exact date the riot occurred has never been determined. Our archives contain much of the documentation that does survive, which enabled historian and former GLBT Historical Society executive director Susan Stryker to research the event in the early 2000s. Together with Victor Silverman, Stryker produced the Emmy Award-winning 2005 documentary Screaming Queens, which succeeded in bringing the riot to greater public awareness. Our special program on August 5 features a screening of Screaming Queens and a conversation with Stryker. Reference archivist Isaac Fellman, who has been working extensively with our transgender-related collections, interviewed Stryker about how she uncovered the legacy of Compton’s. The story of Compton’s exposes gaps in archives; it exists in memory, but official sources, records and contemporary news reporting are scarce. Did this scarcity influence your process and philosophy as a historian? The scarcity of traditional primary-document sources really did require me to embrace creative and nontraditional research methodologies. One of the most important strategies was simply walking in the neighborhood, studying San Francisco’s urban history, using the GLBT Historical Society’s sites database to map historic trans-serving bars and SROs, and reading a lot of spatial and architectural theory. -

It is commonly thought that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT) history is only for LGBT people. This is a false assumption. In out current age of a continually expanding communication network, a given individual will inevitably e interacting with thousands of people, many of them of other nationalities, of other races, and many of them LGBT. Thus, it is crucial for all people to understand the past and possible contributions of all others. There is no room in our society for bigotry, for prejudiced views, or for the simple omission of any group from public knowledge. In acknowledging LGBT history, one teaches respect for all people, regardless of race, gender, nationality, or sexual orientation. By recognizing the accomplishments of LGBT people in our common history, we are also recognizing that LGBT history affects all of us. The people presented here are not amazing because they are LGBT, but because they accomplished great feats of intellect and action. These accomplishments are amplified when we consider the amount of energy these people were required to expend fighting for recognition in a society which refused to accept their contributions because of their sexuality, or fighting their own fear and self-condemnation, as in the case of Michael Wigglesworth and countless others. -

1 | AN INTRODUCTION TO WHAT I HEAR WHEN YOU SAY Deeply ingrained in human nature is a tendency to organize, classify, and categorize our complex world. Often, this is a good thing. This ability helps us make sense of our environment and navigate unfamiliar landscapes while keeping us from being overwhelmed by the constant stream of new information and experiences. When we apply this same impulse to social interactions, however, it can be, at best, reductive and, at worst, dangerous. Seeing each other through the lens of labels and stereotypes prevents us from making authentic connections and understanding each other’s experiences. Through the initiative, What I Hear When You Say ( WIHWYS ), we explore how words can both divide and unite us and learn more about the complex and everchanging ways that language shapes our expectations, opportunities, and social privilege.
