This research is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted at Malmö Queer Film Festival and Cinema Queer Film Festival in Stockholm, between 2017-2019. It explores the relevance of queer film festivals in the lives of LGBTQIA+ persons living in Sweden, and reveals that these festivals are not simply cultural events where films about gender and sexuality are screened, but places through which the political lives of LGBTQIA+ persons become intelligible. The queer film festivals perform highly contextualized and diverse sets of practices to shape the LGBTQIA+ discourse in their particular settings. This thesis focuses on salient features of this engagement: how the queer film festivals define and articulate “queer”, their engagement with space to curate “queerness”, the role of failure and contingency in shaping the queer film festivals as sites of democratic contestations, the performance of inclusivity in the queer film festival organization, and the significance of these events in the lives of the people who work or volunteer at these festivals. -

University LGBT Centers and the Professional Roles Attached to Such Spaces Are Roughly
INTRODUCTION University LGBT Centers and the professional roles attached to such spaces are roughly 45-years old. Cultural and political evolution has been tremendous in that time and yet researchers have yielded a relatively small field of literature focusing on university LGBT centers. As a scholar-activist practitioner struggling daily to engage in a critically conscious life and professional role, I launched an interrogation of the foundational theorizing of university LGBT centers. In this article, I critically examine the discursive framing, theorization, and practice of LGBT campus centers as represented in the only three texts specifically written about center development and practice. These three texts are considered by center directors/coordinators, per my conversations with colleagues and search of the literature, to be the canon in terms of how centers have been conceptualized and implemented. The purpose of this work was three-fold. Through a queer feminist lens focused through interlocking systems of oppression and the use of critical discourse analysis (CDA) 1, I first examined the methodological frameworks through which the canonical literature on centers has been produced. The second purpose was to identify if and/or how identity and multicultural frameworks reaffirmed whiteness as a norm for LGBT center directors. Finally, I critically discussed and raised questions as to how to interrupt and resist heteronormativity and homonormativity in the theoretical framing of center purpose and practice. Hired to develop and direct the University of Washington’s first lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT2) campus center in 2004, I had the rare opportunity to set and implement with the collaboration of queerly minded students, faculty, and staff, a critically theorized and reflexive space. -

Forshee, Ph.D., Early Education & Family Studies Portland Community College Portland, Oregon INTRODUCTION Homophobia and transphobia are complicated topics that touch on core identity issues. Most people tend to conflate sexual orientation with gender identity, thus confusing two social distinctions. Understanding the differences between these concepts provides an opportunity to build personal knowledge, enhance skills in allyship, and effect positive social change. GROUND RULES (1015 minutes) Materials: chart paper, markers, tape. Due to the nature of the topic area, it is essential to develop ground rules for each student to follow. Ask students to offer some rules for participation in the postperformance workshop (i.e., what would help them participate to their fullest). Attempt to obtain a group consensus before adopting them as the official “social contract” of the group. Useful guidelines include the following (Bonner Curriculum, 2009; Hardiman, Jackson, & Griffin, 2007): Respect each viewpoint, opinion, and experience. Use “I” statements – avoid speaking in generalities. The conversations in the class are confidential (do not share information outside of class). Set own boundaries for sharing. Share air time. Listen respectfully. No blaming or scapegoating. Focus on own learning. Clear definitions also provide a context and platform for discussion. Homophobia: a psychological term originally developed by Weinberg (1973) to define an irrational hatred, anxiety, and or fear of homosexuality. -

LGBT History
LGBT History Just like any other marginalized group that has had to fight for acceptance and equal rights, the LGBT community has a history of events that have impacted the community. This is a collection of some of the major happenings in the LGBT community during the 20th century through today. It is broken up into three sections: Pre-Stonewall, Stonewall, and Post-Stonewall. This is because the move toward equality shifted dramatically after the Stonewall Riots. Please note this is not a comprehensive list. Pre-Stonewall 1913 Alfred Redl, head of Austrian Intelligence, committed suicide after being identified as a Russian double agent and a homosexual. His widely-published arrest gave birth to the notion that homosexuals are security risks. 1919 Magnus Hirschfeld founded the Institute for Sexology in Berlin. One of the primary focuses of this institute was civil rights for women and gay people. 1933 On January 30, Adolf Hitler banned the gay press in Germany. In that same year, Magnus Herschfeld’s Institute for Sexology was raided and over 12,000 books, periodicals, works of art and other materials were burned. Many of these items were completely irreplaceable. 1934 Gay people were beginning to be rounded up from German-occupied countries and sent to concentration camps. Just as Jews were made to wear the Star of David on the prison uniforms, gay people were required to wear a pink triangle. WWII Becomes a time of “great awakening” for queer people in the United States. The homosocial environments created by the military and number of women working outside the home provide greater opportunity for people to explore their sexuality. -

Jeanine Ruhsam [email protected] Office Hours: T-TR. 10:00-11:15 AM Office: South College W421 Course Description Queer Theory critically examines the way power works to institutionalize and legitimate certain forms and expressions of sexuality and gender while stigmatizing others. Queer Theory followed the emergence and popularity of Gay and Lesbian (now, LGBT or Queer) Studies in the academy. Whereas LGBT Studies seeks to analyze LGBT people as stable identities, Queer Theory problematizes and challenges rigid identity categories, norms of sexuality and gender and the oppression and violence that such hegemonic norms justify. Often considered the "deconstruction" of LGBT studies, Queer Theory destabilizes sexual and gender identities allowing and encouraging multiple, unfettered interpretations of cultural phenomena. It predicates that all sexual behaviors and gender expressions, all concepts linking such to prescribed, associated identities, and their categorization into “normal” or “deviant” sexualities or gender, are constructed socially and generate modes of social meaning. Queer theory follows and expands upon feminist theory by refusing the belief that sexuality and gender identity are essentialist categories determined by biology that can thus be empirically judged by fixed standards of morality and “truth.” We will begin the course by developing a critical understanding of Queer Theory through reading foundational texts by Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Eve Sedgwick, Gayle Rubin and Leo Bersani. We will then examine the relationships between Queer Theory and other social and cultural theories that probe and critique power, privilege, and normativity, including critical race theory, transgender studies, feminist theory, and disability studies. -

Remarks by Jeanne Pollès President, Latin America & Canada Region Philip Morris International Inc. Investor Day Lausanne, September 29, 2016 (SLIDE 1.) Thank you Nick. Good afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen. I am very pleased to share with you the strong results of PMI’s Latin America & Canada Region and our solid prospects for continued growth. (SLIDE 2.) I will first give you a brief overview of the Region and our volume, share and financial performance. Next, I will outline our main Regional strategies that should enable us to grow our share of market. They should also position the Region to target annual currency-neutral adjusted OCI growth, excluding RRPs, in the high single-digits over the mid to long-term. I will then cover our top markets and finally, following my closing remarks, I will gladly take your questions. (SLIDE 3.) We are the second largest competitor in the Region with a 2015 cigarette market share of 38.9%, up by 0.9 points versus 2013. We are closing the gap with our main competitor. We are present in 44 markets, employ more than 11,000 people and operate ten cigarette manufacturing facilities. Our business and financial performance have been exceptional, generating double- digit adjusted OCI growth, excluding currency, over the past four years, as well as strong cigarette market share growth. These results have been achieved despite the challenging political and economic environment which has resulted in a high degree of instability and unpredictability in many countries, mainly due to fiscal deficits. We also face high inflation, especially in Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela, combined with a currency devaluation against the U.S. -

Queering Queer Legal Studies: An Unreconstructed Ode to Eve Sedgwick (and Others) Brenda Cossman Abstract The essay explores the extant field queer legal studies and maps the multiple meanings of “queer” deployed within it. I distinguish queer from LGBT, but resist any further disciplining of the term. I propose instead an understanding of queer legal studies as a sensibility. Neither a prescription nor a pronouncement, the article is written as an ode to Eve Sedgewick, her axioms and her reparative readings. I offer the essay as a celebration of queer legal studies to date and of its hopeful potentialities into an unknown future. I. Axiom 1: Queer legal theory exists. There is a body of queer legal studies. It is not part of a fantastical yet to be realized future. It is found in the oft-cited works of Francisco Valdes,1 Carl Stychin,2 Kendall Thomas,3 and Janet Halley.4 But, there is so much more. And it exists independently of what might be called LGBT legal studies. I begin with the assertion that queer legal theory exists because many who write queer legal theory begin with a counter-assertion—that there is little or no queer legal scholarship.5 The claim is puzzling. My discomfort with the claim is perhaps based in unrequited love, as I would locate my own work for the last two decades within the tradition of queer legal studies. Alison Mountz, Syracuse University Amy Tweedy, Syracuse University This paper recounts the experiences of co-teaching a community engaged seminar focused on study of sexuality and space in the · city of Syracuse. This geographical focus grounded engagement and provides here a platform from which to address the difficulties of identifyingcommunities organized around diverse, socially constructed identities. The study of sexuality and space prompts a rethinking of how and whether sexuality operates in the city as a . situated series of locations or, rather, a series of identities shaping all spaces. The paper explores a semester-long, student-driven discussion concerning queer as a category in relation to the study · of sexuality and community. Through discussion of this scholarship, we engaged students in the ongoing process of figuringout what it meant to locate queer communities and to queer the broader community. "Sexuality and Space: Queering • 208 Syracuse" focused on the ways in which gender identity expressions unfold geographically, always contingent and contextual. Fluid understandings of sexuality prompt us to re-think the sometimes mundane geographies that we take for granted at a variety of scales, including the body, home, city, workplace, and nation-state. -
