[email protected] PAGE 2 | JIB SHEET Commodore’s Comments Nicole Ferry PYC means different things to every member. To me, it’s my second home. It’s where my children have grown up. To a couple I met today, it’s the place where they met. And now, after 45 years of marriage, they return for their anniversary. The stories, like theirs, go on and on, but after 111 years, PYC remains at best, a place where memories are made and remembered.

This year, I promised to learn to sail. At the first of many SOS (Social Opportunity Sailing) outings, I skippered (drove) a 48-foot Beneteau. At first terrified, I realized that if I can steer a little boat, I could drive the big boat. I drove the 48-footer from PYC to the Pass and halfway back before I gave up my spot. It truly is a moment when you feel freedom from all the responsibilities that normally weigh you down. We will have more SOS events. I hope each of you takes advantage of the opportunity.

The events we have had this Spring have been nothing less than sold out! We had the Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe duo for dinner entertainment and the Crawfish Boil. And our Easter celebration, never fails to be epic.

As you may have seen, our membership continues to grow. We are trying to increase member value, and it is for this reason we have capped membership at 725. Our hope is to maintain outstanding service to our members. We don’t want to lose even one member. You are each close to our PYC family. I hope to see you at the Club. Make sure to check out the calendar of events and, as always, our Facebook page will keep you up to date! Again, I’m honored to be your Commodore!

HAPPY PYC EASTER ! The Ferry’s: Chris, Charlotte, Commodore Nicole, Kessler and Pearce ***GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING - Thursday, May 9th - 6:00pm*** PAGE 3 | JIB SHEET Vice Commodore’s Comments Johnny Smith If you’ve been to the Club lately, I’m sure you’ve noticed the new paint and carpet. They both turned out beautifully and the interior looks better than it has in a long time. The wall hangings and photos are being re-hung in a more organized manner. On the exterior, Greg Spitzer and his crew have been working on the flowerbeds and other foliage around the Clubhouse. As we get deeper into spring, the grounds and flowers on the property are looking better and better. Additionally, General Manager Jim Warwick has hired a tree service to trim the trees behind the Clubhouse and remove dead limbs and branches. We expect the work to be completed by the end of April. After a lot of searching on the Internet, Bob Kriegel and I viewed several possible replacement boats for our committee boat “Maxine” in Madisonville, LA; Tierra Verde, FL; and Tarpon Springs, FL; and I viewed a boat in Gulf Breeze. After lengthy discussions between the PYC committee consisting of Bernie Knight, Murt Guild and me, and the Satori Foundation President Tim Burr, Trustees P/C Alan McMillan and Denis McKinnon, we made an offer on a very nice Mainship 390 Trawler in Tarpon Springs through our broker, Member Terry Myers of Myers Yacht Sales. Our offer has been accepted. The hull survey, engine survey, oil analyses, sea trial and haul out for bottom inspection, will take place Wednesday, April 24th at a shipyard in Tarpon Springs. I plan to be there and perform my own survey alongside the surveyor we hired. (Two sets of eyes are always better than one.) If all goes well, we expect to close on the boat in late April or early May. After closing, we’ll bring the boat home to Pensacola and take it to Pensacola Shipyard for some minor repairs before placing it in service. So, keep your fingers crossed and hope that we don’t find some issue at survey that will cause us to cancel the sale and have to start our search all over again. If all goes well, “Maxine” will then be sold. With all the recent things happening (dramatically increased membership, updated Clubhouse interior, the tall ship “Elcano” visit, the “American Magic” crew being in town with the practice boat “Mule,” and the purchase of a replacement committee boat), it’s an exciting time to be a member of the South’s Finest Yacht Club.

Easter is “in the books” and, by now, most of the cold fronts have finished their dance, which means that our boating season is beginning to ramp up! Ahead are races for the Junior Sailing Program, our Summer Camps, soon-to-start Thursday Night Club Racing, and competition events away from PYC.

In last month’s report, I hinted about a new effort we would be making called “Destination RaftUp.” It’s not so much a raft up as it is participation and support of our PYC sailors as they carry our burgee to regattas. We have several of these in the works for the year, and the first run at this will be for the GYA Challenge Cup in Gulfport, June 14-16. I KNOW that this is Father’s Day weekend, and many will have family functions, but even our Commodore Nikki is trying to take her family plans mobile for husband, Chris, so that they can play in Gulfport :).

This regatta features four different boats for each club, and historically, the bulk of attendance is by the teams that are actually racing. Our own Paul Gillette is heading this year’s effort that includes legend Hunter Riddle with teams on “Atlantic Union,” “Phoenix,” “Farvignugen,” and the Viper. The goal is to have as many PYC members as possible make the trip to Gulfport for the weekend, bringing the support to our teams and taking some PYC style to GYC!

I will be running my powerboat over a day ahead of the event, and Iven Streckel is considering bringing his and Jenny’s beautiful Marlow “Silver Lining.” Furthermore, we will have one of our coaching RIBs there, as well, for on-water support of our racers. If we get all the bits and pieces put together, we will have information on accommodations, access for getting on the water during the regatta, and social events centering around the Challenge Cup. While this is still in development, we will be booking a number of rooms in the closest condominium to the Gulfport Yacht Club.

By next month’s Jib Sheet, we will have plans in place and options for you to consider. So start to think about it now, and how you may want to participate. Gulfport is about 100 miles from Pensacola, so it’s an easy drive and a doable boat trip, as well.

As your Membership Chairman, I am lucky to have this post after years of great work by P/C Jim Reeves, Commodore Nikki Ferry, and the team of Dean Kirschner and Tiffany Meece … As of this month, we are now 708 members STRONG, and quite close to our self-imposed cap of 725. Nearly every month, we lose several of our members to natural reasons, but make no mistake; PYC is a full and thriving membership!

While we are certainly monitoring our cap number, retaining our existing members and maintaining a great environment for all becomes more important all the time. “Destination RaftUp” is one of those efforts, and we are never at a loss for great food and hospitality at PYC. Everything centers around all of you in the Club, and your thoughts and questions are always encouraged. If you cannot find me at the Club, please email any inquiries you may have. Here’s wishing everyone an amazing Springtime! ALOHA, To m

Spring is here, Daylight Savings time is back, the weather is great, the water is warming up, and some anxious dinghy sailors are ready to go. After racing, we will have hamburgers and beer/sodas for the racers for FREE! Thanks go to Steven Orr who will donate the food. Could be hamburgers, could be hotdogs, could be both. Show up for a 1730 beach launch and start. Juniors and adults are encouraged to come and compete. Check with César, [email protected], if you want to use a Club boat. Availability is limited. Don’t miss out! No excuses!

2019 RACE COMMITTEE OPPORTUNITIES We have several different regattas scheduled to make 2019 an exciting and interesting year. A great way to enjoy yachting at PYC is to participate on a race committee. NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. It even includes the famous “Free Lunch!” Contact our Race Committee Chairman, Bob Madden [email protected], and he will connect you with the perfect regatta and position for you. Bob is also our chief scorer this year, working with Maryanne, DO, César, and others who have done this before. This will keep one person from having to do this all of the time. You might like to help with scoring and be the first to know who won! Richard Brent is our Judge/Protest Chairman, in addition to being PRO (Principal Race Officer) for some regattas, to be sure we have appropriate qualified judges for the level of event being hosted. We are fortunate to have Charlie Harp, with his experience, to be our frequent Chief Judge and César Travado, our Sailing Director, to help as needed.

BE A REGATTA CHAIRPERSON As regatta chair, you will promote the regatta while planning a special fun event. The Race Committee will, of course, be completely managed by the RC Chair, and Sally Smith will get the trophies. The NOR’s (Notice of Race) and SI’s (Sailing Instructions) are already written. This is fun and it gets you involved with the exciting part of the Club. Ask the Fleet Captain for details and opportunities.

ADULTS INTERESTED IN LEARNING TO SAIL Our new RS Ventures are here, rigged, and ready to go. Fantastic boats for teaching adults to sail, Ventures are fun and responsive, but also stable and safe. There will be opportunities for (C420’s, Lasers, ) as well as larger keelboats such as the Satori Foundation’s Tartan 28, “Second Wind.” If you have been thinking about this, it is time to act. Get in line. César will happily teach you the skills needed for loving sailing for the rest of your life. Rates vary.

MARCH/APRIL EVENTS: Mar. 16: Maxine 3 Regatta concluded the 2019 Maxine Sansom Memorial Trophy Series. Richard Brent was the PRO. Unfortunately, the April Jib Sheet article was written before the regatta was sailed, so belated results are the following PYC members: Hunter Riddle, Paul Gillette, and Jeff Hunt took 1, 2, 3, respectively in the Spinnaker Division. PYC member Bob Kriegel won 1st place in the Non-Spinnaker Division, and Navy YC members, Fred Locke, and Julie & Kim Connerley took 2nd and 3rd respectively. Apr. 6-7: 2019 Thistle Southeast Regional Championship: Fifteen (15) Thistles traveled to PYC to compete in their annual Southeast Regional Championship April 6-7. Five great races were completed although unusually heavy fog moved in just as racing was scheduled to start on Saturday. After a delay of a couple of hours, 2 races were sailed, and 3 more occurred on Sunday morning. The PYC staff did an outstanding job of providing excellent food with a keg of beer for our guests while the Club was being re-carpeted.

A PENDING EVENT An Offshore Regatta for 2019 is soon to be announced. The planning committee, chaired by DJ Johnson and Mike Patterson, is close to having final plans. Tentatively, there will be a domestic offshore race/rally to start November 1 to St. Petersburg YC. It was determined that there is not enough time to adequately plan and prepare for an international race this year. However, this same committee will begin planning for an international race to be held in 2021, after the next Isla Mujeres Race. Bob Kriegel and Fleet Captain Hal Smith will assist the committee. Others will be recruited. This will likely be something that the power cruisers can enjoy as well as the sailors. PAGE 17 | JIB SHEET ELCANO ELCANO ELCANO ELCANO ELCANO ELCANO — — — THE HISTORIC ELCANO VISIT — — — The Spanish training ship, the tall ship “Juan Sebastian De Elcano,” visited Pensacola the first week of April as part of a celebration of the 500th Year Anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the world by “Elcano” started by Magellan. The “Elcano” festivities and “Elcano”/PYC Challenge Race were a huge success by any measure with sunny skies, a Blue Angel performance, and a “-by” by “American Magic.” We held a friendly match race with three PYC teams against the best three teams of their crew on April 2, 2019. The challenge was accepted by the Spanish Navy Attaché, Capitan Juan Garcia-Fernandez. Our new RS Ventures were used thanks to Satori Foundation, and they worked very well. The PYC teams prevailed in each of the three races to win the overall trophy which will be kept in our main trophy case. The PYC staff did an outstanding job of preparing refreshments and food, in spite of the fact that the Club was in a state of disruption with the new carpet installation. Jenny and Iven Streckel, Carol and Tom Patterson, and Linda and Jim Oyler were gracious enough to take out spectators, and the on-deck crew members watched the racing. It was a great show! Recently I have been asked several questions about PYC’s raft ups. What do we do? How do I get involved? Is it just for sailboats? Is it just for powerboats? Just to name a few. It all starts in January of every year. The Cruising Chairman attends an annual PYC Planning Committee Meeting to set raft-up weekend dates that do not conflict with major club events, including races and parties. Then, all interested members meet to discuss raft-up destinations and secure volunteer hosts for each monthly cruise. The host is responsible for communicating with Club Management to choose an entrée for the Saturday evening beach dinner.. We also take ice chests containing the Sunday morning Bloody Mary/Mimosa Bar essentials and a box containing paper goods, garbage bags, etc. A folding table, small sun canopy, and a PYC feather flag are also available. Several boaters are always available to help transport the raft up equipment when asked. All Club members are welcome at raft ups. There is usually an equal representation of power and sailboats, and many of the raft ups are drivable. Sometimes, we even have RVs in attendance. Most raft ups are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, but you don’t have to wait until Saturday to arrive. Many times, boats will arrive at the anchorage on Friday or even earlier, but most boats arrive about mid-day on Saturday. Saturday afternoon is spent visiting on each other’s boats, beach combing, playing in or on the water, or just relaxing. Rafters start to assemble on the beach for dinner around 4 PM. Everyone brings a dish to share and his or her own drinks. No effort is made to coordinate or assign dishes, but there is always a wide variety of appetizers, sides, salads, and desserts. During the winter months, we all bring a few pieces of firewood for a warm and cozy beach bonfire. About 10 AM Sunday morning, we reassemble on the beach for a Bloody Mary/Mimosa brunch. Again, everyone brings a dish to share and the variety of dishes assures that everyone will find something they like. Boaters without overnight accommodations can still enjoy the camaraderie of the party. Many choose to join us for the Saturday afternoon fun and food and return home. Others prefer to come for the morning brunch and enjoy the rest of the day on the bay. The raft ups generally break up by mid-afternoon on Sunday, but nothing says you can’t stay another day or two if you choose. Bottom line is - raft ups are just an informal way to enjoy boats, water, fun, and friends. So, come join us! FT. McREE

PIRATES COVE

PAGE 20 | JIB SHEET Cruiser’s Corner Jim & Linda Oyler The March raft up was one of extremes! We started with a 70-degree sunshiny day and finished in a 48-degree misty rain. The weather didn’t stop the fun. Saturday was glorious, with clear skies and a light breeze. We were all fooled into believing Spring was finally here. Dinghy riding, beach walking, and boat hopping were the order of the afternoon. We even had a “’dinghy diving demonstration,” but I’m not convinced this athletic fete was intentional. Shorts and bathing suits were the dress of the day. Stu Bugg, our host this month, talked PYC into sending a copious amount of jambalaya which was delicious! This was accompanied by a wide variety of sides, salads, and desserts. Almost 40 people enjoyed the dinner on the beach. As the sun went down, the bonfire was lit and provided a cozy warmth late into the evening. The front rolled through about 3:30 AM bringing a 30-knot north wind and thick gray clouds. Many versions of the “anchor dance” were carried out over the next 2 hours, with 2 boats becoming way too friendly with each other. The good news is that no damage was done and no one was injured. When the sun came up it was amazing to see the number of boats that had re-anchored during the night. Actually, the sun never actually came up, as it was blanketed by menacing gray clouds. We had made plans to go out the pass to welcome the “Elcano” at 8:00 AM and come back to Fort McRee for brunch; however, when the time came, everyone decided we would just watch from our anchorage. No one was ready to brave the cold north wind. “Elcano” was quite a sight coming in the pass and we could hear the canon salute when she neared the Navy Base. Twenty of us did make it to the beach for brunch in spite of the cold wind and the threat of rain. Once again, the food was excellent but brunch was brief as the clouds were getting heavier and darker. The misty rain started as we were packing up and continued off and on throughout the day. The highlight of the trip home was seeing the “Elcano,” now securely tied up at the Navy Base. “American Magic” was doing some heavy air practice and never coming off her foils during a tack. Passing Allegheny Pier, with “Elcano” on our left and “American Magic” on the right, was quite a thrill! Many thanks to Stu Bugg for hosting this exciting raft up. The raft up in May will be at Big Sabine. Bob Holmes will be our host, and I’m sure he will have a great weekend planned. The weather is getting better, so it’s time to get out on the water. See you on the water or around The South’s Finest Yacht Club! 2019 RAFT UP SCHEDULE Date Destination Host/Hosts

PAGE 21 | JIB SHEET Do You Ride? Shine Rogers “PYC Sons of Boaters” Wants You AND your Friends. All Riders Are Welcome! Riding season is now in full swing! We have a contact list of local Son’s of Boaters. Please contact me if you would like to be added to our Mailing /Phone list, to be kept in-the-loop for our often impromptu rides. We also are scheduling some destination and short local rides. As always, we always request, and will happily entertain, your suggestions for local rides to some fun spots you know. “Ghostrider” AKA Shine Rogers The most recent Destination Ride was Daytona Bike Week held March 8-17, 2019. Here’s Johnny reporting! Four PYC SOB Members made it to Daytona Bike Week. They were Johnny Smith, Alan McMillan, Marco Stolfi and new member Paul Bruno. Marco towed his Harley from Atlanta with his RV and Alan, Johnny and Paul towed their Harleys from Pensacola and stayed in motel rooms. Everyone had a great breakfast at Marco’s RV every morning before setting out for the day’s events. The weather was perfect until noon on the last day, when light rain set in. Many custom motorcycles were at the event, vendors were selling all the bike goodies, and the big manufacturers had demo rides going on. Main Street on the beach was very crowded, as always. One of the highlights of the trip was attending "Biker Bash" at Halifax River Yacht Club, with a great buffet, drinks and entertainment. All the members were dressed in biker garb! We must not have behaved too badly because they invited us back the next morning for Mimosas at the pool bar. Another highlight was the last day of the event, when we all went to the Cabbage Patch Bar and heard a great band headed by Carlos Santana’s brother, who was an unbelievable guitarist! It was a great event and now we’re all looking forward to Thunder Beach at Panama City Beach. Reportedly, it was not badly damaged by Hurricane Michael and has mostly recovered. (Submitted by Johnny Smith)

Recent Local Ride: The crew, led by Bob Kriegel, ended up at Big Daddy’s Grill for great fun, good food, and the obligatory adult beverage-of-choice when with friends! In Special Remembrance of

Mrs. Ann Owczarczak

In addition to helping with regatta registration for many years, we also remember Ann for having assisted with the Friday Night Drawing/Split Ticket event for many years. Thanks, Ann, for helping make our regattas successful and our Friday evenings more fun! Interested in Volunteering? The PYC Hospitality Committee schedules volunteers from the membership to sell Split Tickets every Friday night. No experience is necessary. We will be happy to train you. It is a very good way for New Members to get to know other Club members. If you are interested in volunteering, please email you name and contact information to Ann-Marie Bowyer at [email protected]. The Hospitality Committee appreciates the membership’s continuing support of Split Ticket sales on Fridays at the Club. The money we raise goes to support improvements at PYC.
