2 Order of Service The Bishop introduces the liturgy to the people. Bishop Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, on this most holy night, when our Lord Jesus Christ passed from death to life, the Church invites us to come together in vigil and prayer. This is the Passover of the Lord. We remember his death and resurrection. We meet to hear his word and celebrate his mysteries, confident that we shall share his victory over death and live with him for ever in God. The Bishop blesses the new fire. Eternal God, who made this most holy night to shine with the brightness of your one true light: set us aflame with the fire of your love, and bring us to the radiance of your heavenly glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

The unlit Easter candle is handed to the Bishop. The cross, the Greek letters and the year are traced as the following words are said: Christ yesterday and today, the beginning and the end, Alpha and Omega, all time belongs to him and all ages; to him be glory and power, through every age and for ever. All Amen.

Five nails are then inserted into the candle reminding us of the five wounds of Christ. 1. By his holy 2. and glorious wounds 3. may Christ our Lord 4. guard us 5. and keep us.

The Paschal candle is lit from the new fire. May the light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel all darkness from our hearts and minds.

3 The procession moves to the West Door of the Cathedral, where the candle is lifted high. Cantor The light of Christ. Thanks be to God. The procession enters the Cathedral. The candle is lifted high again: Cantor The light of Christ. Choir Thanks be to God. The people’s candles are lit. The procession continues until the Paschal candle arrives at the altar. Cantor The light of Christ. Choir Thanks be to God. The Paschal candle is placed in the stand in the where incense is offered.

Exsultet The Exsultet is sung, unfolding the story of our redemption.

Bishop As we await the risen Christ, let us hear the record of God’s saving deeds in history, recalling how he saved his people in ages past and in the fullness of time sent his Son to be our Redeemer; and let us pray that through this Easter celebration God may bring to perfection in each of us the saving work he has begun.

I Reading Genesis 1.1-5 Reader God creates heaven and earth, night and day. In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

Psalm Psalm 33.1-9 Choir Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous, for it is good for the just to sing praises. Praise the Lord with the lyre; on the ten-stringed harp sing his praise. Sing for him a new song; play skilfully, with shouts of praise. For the word of the Lord is true and all his works are sure. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the loving-kindness of the Lord. By the word of the Lord were the heavens made and all their host by the breath of his mouth. He gathers up the waters of the sea as in a waterskin and lays up the deep in his treasury. Let all the earth fear the Lord; stand in awe of him, all who dwell in the world. For he spoke, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast. Bishop Let us pray. Silence is kept.

PLEASE STAND Collect Almighty God, you have created the heavens and the earth and made us in your own image: teach us to discern your hand in all your works and your likeness in all your children; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. All Amen. 5 PLEASE SIT

II Reading Genesis 3.8-13, 22-24 Reader Having eaten the forbidden fruit, Adam and Eve try to hide from God, and are expelled from the Garden of Eden. They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, ‘Where are you?’ He said, ‘I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.’ He said, ‘Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?’ The man said, ‘The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.’ Then the Lord God said to the woman, ‘What is this that you have done?’ The woman said, ‘The serpent tricked me, and I ate.’ Then the Lord God said, ‘See, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever’— therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken. He drove out the man; and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim, and a sword flaming and turning to guard the way to the tree of life. This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

Psalm Psalm 130 Choir Out of the depths have I cried to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice; let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication. If you, Lord, were to mark what is done amiss, O Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, so that you shall be feared. I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him; in his word is my hope. My soul waits for the Lord, more than the night watch for the morning, more than the night watch for the morning. O Israel, wait for the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy; with him is plenteous redemption and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins. Bishop Let us pray. Silence is kept. 6 PLEASE STAND Collect Heavenly Father, whose blessed Son was revealed to destroy the works of the devil and to make us the children of God and heirs of eternal life: grant that we, having this hope, may purify ourselves even as he is pure; that when he shall appear in power and great glory we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen.

III Reading Exodus 14.15-15.1 Reader Moses leads the people of Israel to safety through the parting of the sea, while the Egyptians perish. Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Why do you cry out to me? Tell the Israelites to go forward. But you lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the Israelites may go into the sea on dry ground. Then I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them; and so I will gain glory for myself over Pharaoh and all his army, his chariots, and his chariot drivers. And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I have gained glory for myself over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his chariot drivers.’ The angel of God who was going before the Israelite army moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from in front of them and took its place behind them. It came between the army of Egypt and the army of Israel. And so the cloud was there with the darkness, and it lit up the night; one did not come near the other all night. Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night, and turned the sea into dry land; and the waters were divided. The Israelites went into the sea on dry ground, the waters forming a wall for them on their right and on their left. The Egyptians pursued, and went into the sea after them, all of Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and chariot drivers. At the morning watch the Lord in the pillar of fire and cloud looked down upon the Egyptian army, and threw the Egyptian army into panic. He clogged their chariot wheels so that they turned with difficulty. The Egyptians said, ‘Let us flee from the Israelites, for the Lord is fighting for them against Egypt.’ Then the Lord 7 said to Moses, ‘Stretch out your hand over the sea, so that the water may come back upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots and chariot drivers.’ So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at dawn the sea returned to its normal depth. As the Egyptians fled before it, the Lord tossed the Egyptians into the sea. The waters returned and covered the chariots and the chariot drivers, the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed them into the sea; not one of them remained. But the Israelites walked on dry ground through the sea, the waters forming a wall for them on their right and on their left. Thus the Lord saved Israel that day from the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. Israel saw the great work that the Lord did against the Egyptians. So the people feared the Lord and believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses. Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord:

The Canticle of Moses and Miriam Choir Sing to the Lord, for he has won a glorious victory. I will sing to the Lord, who has triumphed gloriously, the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea. The Lord is my strength and my song and has become my salvation. Sing to the Lord, for he has won a glorious victory. This is my God whom I will praise, the God of my forebears whom I will exalt. The Lord is a warrior, the Lord is his name. Sing to the Lord, for he has won a glorious victory. Your right hand, O Lord, is glorious in power: your right hand, O Lord, shatters the enemy. In your unfailing love, O Lord, you lead the people whom you have redeemed. Sing to the Lord, for he has won a glorious victory. And by your invincible strength you will guide them to your holy dwelling. You will bring them in and plant them, O Lord, in the sanctuary which your hands have established. Sing to the Lord, for he has won a glorious victory.

8 Bishop Let us pray. Silence is kept.

PLEASE STAND Collect Lord God our redeemer, who heard the cry of your people and sent your servant Moses to lead them out of slavery: free us from the tyranny of sin and death and, by the leading of your Spirit, bring us to our promised land; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

IV Reading Ezekiel 36.25-28 Reader God renews his covenant with his people. I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. I will put my spirit within you, and make you follow my statutes and be careful to observe my ordinances. Then you shall live in the land that I gave to your ancestors; and you shall be my people, and I will be your God. This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

Psalm Psalm 42.1-7 Choir As the deer longs for the water brooks, so longs my soul for you, O God. My soul is athirst for God, even for the living God; when shall I come before the presence of God? My tears have been my bread day and night, while all day long they say to me, ‘Where is now your God?’ Now when I think on these things, I pour out my soul: how I went with the multitude and led the procession to the house of God, with the voice of praise and thanksgiving, among those who kept holy day. Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul, and why are you so disquieted within me? O put your trust in God; for I will yet give him thanks, who is the help of my countenance, and my God.

9 Bishop Let us pray. Silence is kept.

PLEASE STAND Collect Heavenly Father, by the power of your Holy Spirit you give to your faithful people new life in the water of baptism. Guide and strengthen us by the same Spirit, that we who are born again may serve you in faith and love, and grow into the full stature of your Son, Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit now and for ever. All Amen.

All Amen. The Liturgy of the Word

New Testament Reading Romans 6.3-11 Reader Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

11 Gospel Acclamation Choir Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! I am the first and the last, says the Lord. I was dead, and behold, I live. I am alive for evermore, alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Gospel Mark 16.1-8 Reader The Lord be with you All and also with you. Hear the  Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. All Glory to you, O Lord. When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, ‘Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?’ When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, ‘Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.’ So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

Presentation of the Confirmation Candidates The Bishop asks the candidates for confirmation to stand, and addresses them: N & N, have you been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit? Candidates I have. Are you ready with your own mouth and from your own heart to affirm your faith in Jesus Christ? Candidates I am. The Bishop addresses the whole congregation. Faith is the gift of God to his people. In baptism the Lord is adding to our number those whom he is calling. People of God, will you welcome N & N and uphold them in their life in Christ? All With the help of God, we will.

PLEASE STAND Decision and Renewal of Baptismal Vows The Bishop addresses the congregation. In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Now that we have completed our observance of Lent we renew the promises made at our baptism, affirming our allegiance to Christ, and our rejection of all that is evil. Therefore I ask: Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God? All I reject them. Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil? All I renounce them. Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour? All I repent of them. 14 Do you turn to Christ as Saviour? All I turn to Christ. Do you submit to Christ as Lord? All I submit to Christ. Do you come to Christ, the way, the truth and the life? All I come to Christ.

May God, who has given you the desire to follow Christ, give you the strength to continue in the Way. All Amen. Prayer over the Water Praise God who made heaven and earth, All who keeps his promise for ever. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give thanks and praise. Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ was baptized in the river Jordan: we thank you for the gift of water to cleanse us and revive us. We thank you that through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people out of slavery to freedom in the Promised Land. We thank you that through the deep waters of death you brought your Son, and raised him to life in triumph. Bless this water,  that your servants who are washed in it may be made one with Christ in his death and in his resurrection, to be cleansed and delivered from all sin. Send your Holy Spirit upon them, bring them to new birth in the household of faith and raise them with Christ to full and eternal life; for all might, majesty, authority, and power are yours, now and for ever. All Amen.

15 Profession of Faith Let us together profess the faith of the church. Do you believe and trust in God the Father? All I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ? All I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit? All I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Almighty God, we thank you for our fellowship in the household of faith with all who have been baptized in your name. Keep us faithful to our baptism, and so make us ready for that day when the whole creation shall be made perfect in your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. All Amen. May Christ dwell in your hearts through faith, that you may be rooted and grounded in love and bring forth the fruit of the Spirit. All Amen. The people are sprinkled with Holy Water while the choir sings the Vidi Aquam (Psalm 118, Ezekiel 47).

All It is right to give thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, almighty and eternal Father, 18 and on this first day of Easter to celebrate with joyful hearts the memory of your wonderful works. For by the mystery of his passion Jesus Christ, your risen Son, has conquered the powers of death and hell and restored in men and women the image of your glory. He has placed them once more in paradise and opened to them the gate of life eternal. And so, in the joy of this Passover, earth and heaven resound with gladness, while angels and archangels and the powers of all creation sing for ever the hymn of your glory: Sanctus and Benedictus Choir Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Holy, holy, holy, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Benedictus qui venit Blessed is he that cometh in nomine Domini. in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in excelsis. Hosanna in the highest.

Bishop Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying, Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

19 Jesus Christ is Lord: All Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. You are the Saviour of the world. And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the whole world, rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption; as we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we in the company of Mary, the Virgin Mother of the Lord, Mary Magdalene and all the holy apostles and martyrs, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.
