A soprano soloist, 14-year-old Lauren is the youngest Singaporean to have ever won in the under 16 solo vocal category at the 70th Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in 2017 - the same competition renown opera singer Pavarotti won in 1955 - which was held in Wales for over 500 contestants coming from 50 countries.
Some of her other awards include: only vocal winner in the junior solo category of the inaugural Singapore International Festival of Music Competition for contestants worldwide in 2017, first prize winner of the inaugural 2016 Singapore Lyric Opera-ASEAN junior Vocal Competition, only vocal finalist of the 2015 Symphony 924 Young Talents Project and champion of 2014 OKTO One Minute of Fame TV talent contest. She was also the first Singaporean to win first prize at the American Protégé International Voice Competition in New York in 2012, and was named the Best Performer at the winners’ recital at Carnegie Hall, at the age of 9.
Lauren has performed as a soloist in many prestigious venues in Singapore, as well as internationally in China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, United States and Wales. Her performances extend from state and corporate events to international awards ceremonies and world summit. On the concert stage, she has performed as a vocal soloist with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Singapore Lyric Opera, Orchestra of the Music Makers, NAFA Chinese Orchestra, KidsPhilharmonic@Sg and To Ensemble. She is also the youngest performer ever to hold a vocal solo recital in Esplanade when she was 9. Her repertoire includes an eclectic mix of classical arias, classical crossovers, musical theatre and popular songs, in various languages such as English, Chinese, Bahasa, Tagalog, Italian, Latin, French and German.
The highest scorer and youngest candidate at 11 years old for Trinity College London’s Grade 8 classical voice examinations, Lauren has also received a Singapore National Arts Council grant at the age of 9 for her pursuit in classical singing. She also plays the piano and violin. Lauren believes that music can unite people, and hopes to be able to keep using her love of music to help the vulnerable and marginalized. In November 2016, she helped raised $300,000 for SPD, a charity that supports people with disabilities and special needs, in a concert featuring the Singapore Chinese Orchestra with Lauren as the soloist.
Outside the music world, Lauren’s other interests include physics and coding. A secondary three student in the International Baccalaureate program in a local school, Lauren was in the Ministry of Education gifted education program in her primary school from 2013-15, and is currently also a member of Mensa and her school’s science club. She is under the tutelage of Mr Phua Ee Kia.
