Fact-checking, data journalism, explanatory journalism, il ruolo giornalistico delle piattaforme, paywall vs crowdfunding, l’era dei video e del mobile, robot journalism, realtà virtuale, il coinvolgimento dei lettori e il ruolo civico dell’informazione, la crisi dell’homepage, alla ricerca della “nuova” obiettività, il giornalismo mobile first, capire l’audience oltre le metriche, social networks vs media mainstream: ultimo atto, il caso Spotlight e il potere del giornalismo di cambiare le cose. Il pubblico e gli speaker in arrivo da tutto il mondo saranno impegnati ad affrontare questi temi che riguardano strettamente la riflessione giornalistica, ma anche tematiche legate all’attualità: i migranti, le guerre, il terrorismo, la rinascita dei nazionalismi, l’Europa in crisi e le nuove sfide della democrazia, la privacy e la sorveglianza di massa, la libertà di espressione e la lotta contro la censura, il ruolo delle organizzazioni non governative nel coprire territori di guerra. Come sempre arriveranno da tutto il mondo i volontari, 194 fra studenti, aspiranti giornalisti, fotografi provenienti 19 diversi paesi: Brasile, Bulgaria, Camerun, Egitto, Francia, Germania, Grecia, India, Iraq, Italia, Kenya, Lituania, Regno Unito, Russia, Slovenia, Spagna, Sri Lanka, Stati Uniti, Ungheria.

Contexts Translation, like any writing, is usually practiced in solitary conditions. But it links multitudes.1 How do books, and the ideas within them, travel between countries (where the language is not the same)? While some Europeans are indeed able and willing to read fiction in English, this is not true for a majority of readers, and English readers are hardly noted for their abilities vis-à-vis other languages. Translation is the vehicle that overcomes this hiatus. Nevertheless, and as has frequently been stated in research studies, the UK has long been the largest „exporting‟ country of published fiction within Europe, thus frequently being seen as the „centre‟ exporting its works, via translation, to the „periphery‟, or peripheries. Italy, by contrast has traditionally had only a small „export market‟ as far as literature is concerned.2 Novelist Ian McEwan spoke recently of a country‟s “creative energy index”, calculated from a range of attributes including the numbers of its books which have been translated.3 But who „chooses‟ which books for translation, and what determines their choices?     Wesleyan University – Graduate Liberal Studies course proposal For Spring 2019 Instructor: Jeanne Bonner Italian Women Writers: Before and After #FerranteFever From Grazia Deledda in the early part of the 20th century (the only Italian woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature), Elsa Morante and Natalia Ginzburg of the wartime era to Anna Maria Ortese in the postwar period, and Margaret Mazzantini and Elena Ferrante in more recent times, Italian literature by women, and in particular fiction or fictionalized memoir, provides a window on the times, as well as a portrait of a gender enshrined as Madonna-like on the one hand or sultry, sexual objects on the other but whose ambitions, in any event, have been vigorously policed (to quote playwright and actress Franca Rame, “All home, bed and church”). In this course, we will focus primarily on Italian women novelists and short story writers of the 20th and 21st century, with a few examples of earlier writers as well as two standout poets. And in doing so, we will read not only a Nobel laureate but also multiple writers who have won Italy’s highest literary prize, the Premio Strega. Indeed, the women authors who paved the way for #FerranteFever form a rich canon of literature unto themselves, despite the obstacles placed in their way. We will examine the social and political issues addressed by these works while also paying close attention to the context in which these Italian women writers wrote. That includes the political and social developments in Italy in the 19th and 20th centuries, with an emphasis on issues of special relevance to women.
