Nachlässe von Germanistinnen und Germanisten aus der DDR: eine Beständeübersicht Simone Waidmann / Frederike Teweleit / Ruth Doersing Die nachfolgende Beständeübersicht ist als heuristisches Arbeitsinstrument zu verstehen, das keinerlei Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit erhebt. Sie beruht auf Re cherchen in öffentlich zugänglichen Nachweisinstrumenten und Selbstauskünften bestandshaltender Institutionen. Neben Literaturwissenschaftlerinnen und Literaturwissenschaftlern wurden in Auswahl auch germanistische Linguistinnen und Linguisten berücksichtigt. Auf nahme in die Übersicht fanden nur Bestände (Nachlässe und Vorlässe), die von den genannten Personen bzw. deren Erben gebildet wurden. Instituts- und Gremien unterlagen, Promotions- und Habilitationsakten, Personalakten von Arbeitgebern und andere durch Dritte gebildete Bestände, u. a. Stasiakten, bleiben unberück sichtigt. Die Heterogenität der Angaben ist auf die sehr unterschiedlichen Er schließungsstände in den jeweiligen Archiven zurückzuführen. A Polish text with an English summary. The book entitled the “Phenomenon of young writers in Italian literature of the 20th century” discusses a contentious issue in Italian literature. The definition of this trend draws on three meanings of the word young; related to chronological age, professional experience and subject matter. The 1980s generation of young writers emerged as a response to the literary stagnation of the previous decade and in the context of postmodernism. Publishing houses played an important role through promoting young literary debuts in the first half of the decade (Tondelli, De Carlo, Del Giudice, Busi), and later the rich prose of young writers of the late-1980s. Pier Vittorio Tondelli was of great importance for the young writers of the 1990s, as were the regular meetings of literary circles in Reggio Emilia. The young prose of the 1990s can be characterised by the thematization of youth, multimedia contamina- tions and motifs derived from the pulp genre. Also visible are other peripheral trends, which extend beyond the time frame of the 20th century. -

Reading Gail Sher Gail Reading Reading Gail Sher describes the development of Gail Sher’s poetry over a thirty-five year period: the early radical language experiments, the reimagining of ancient Asian literary and musical forms, the “wisdom mind” poems rooted in Tibetan Buddhism, and her late work, influenced by contemporary writers and her experience as a psychotherapist. The book includes detailed illustrations of the linguistic strategies she has used to help a reader “open to the inconceivable.” It concludes with a bibliography and two brief chronologies, one of her outer life and one of her inner, psychological relationship with language. While temporally in Syria, Adonis helped in editing the cultural supplement of the newspaper Al-Thawra but pro government writers clashed with his agenda and forced him to flee the country. His name appeared as editor from the magazine's fourth edition. Poetry, he argued, must remain a realm in which language and ideas are examined, reshaped, and refined, in which the poet refuses to descend to the level of daily expediencies. Adonis later started another poetry magazine, titled Mawaqif English: "Positions" ; the magazine was first published in , considered a significant literary and cultural quarterly. A number of literary figures later joined and contributed to Mawaqif , including Elias Khoury , Hisham Sharabi and Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish among others. -

INTRODUCTION The Surreal without Surrealism The time will come, if it is not already come, when the surrealist enterprise:': will be studied and evaluated, in the history of literature, as an adventure of hope. —Wallace Fowlie, Age of Surrealism Indubitably, Surrealism and the GDR are closely connected, and are more closely related to each other than one might think. When, for example, one listens to the recollections and reads the memoirs of those who lived in this country, apparently no other conclusion can be drawn. Life in the East German Communist state had a surrealistic disposition, was associated with the grotesque, absurd and irrational. Admittedly, Surrealism did not exist in the GDR. Not only are the insights of Hans Magnus Enzensberger and Peter Bürger on the death of the historical avant-garde convincing and applicable to the GDR;1 it is also significant that no German artist or writer who considered him- or herself a Surrealist prior to 1945 returned from exile to settle in the SBZ or the GDR. Most of the celebrities of German Surrealism during the Weimar Republic were forced to go into exile or did not return to Germany at all. Max Ernst, for example, remained living in the USA, and then in 1953 moved to his wife’s old quarters in Paris; Hans Arp decided to live in Switzerland, and in 1949 chose the USA as his home country. Others who had lived through and survived Hitler’s Germany had to face the harsh demands of National Socialist cultural politics that downgraded the avant-garde to the status of Entartete Kunst, or degenerate art, and sidelined and even terrorized its representatives. -

documenta studies #11 December 2020 NANNE BUURMAN Northern Gothic: Werner Haftmann’s German Lessons, or A Ghost (Hi)Story of Abstraction This essay by the documenta and exhibition scholar Nanne Buurman I See documenta: Curating the History of the Present, ed. by Nanne Buurman and Dorothee Richter, special traces the discursive tropes of nationalist art history in narratives on issue, OnCurating, no. 13 (June 2017). German pre- and postwar modernism. In Buurman’s “Ghost (Hi)Story of Abstraction” we encounter specters from the past who swept their connections to Nazism under the rug after 1945, but could not get rid of them. She shows how they haunt art history, theory, the German feuilleton, and even the critical German postwar literature. The editor of documenta studies, which we founded together with Carina Herring and Ina Wudtke in 2018, follows these ghosts from the history of German art and probes historical continuities across the decades flanking World War II, which she brings to the fore even where they still remain implicit. Buurman, who also coedited the volume documenta: Curating the History of the Present (2017),I thus uses her own contribution to documenta studies to call attention to the ongoing relevance of these historical issues for our contemporary practices. Let’s consider the Nazi exhibition of so-called Degenerate Art, presented in various German cities between 1937 and 1941, which is often regarded as documenta’s negative foil. To briefly recall the facts: The exhibition brought together more than 650 works by important artists of its time, with the sole aim of stigmatizing them and placing them in the context of the Nazis’ antisemitic racial ideology. -

Kelletat Pilgerfahrt ins Land der Poesie Die An- und Umtriebe des Übersetzers Richard Pietraß (Laudatio auf Richard Pietraß aus Anlass der Verleihung des Übersetzerpreises Ginkgo-Biloba für Lyrik im Hilde- Domin-Saal der Stadtbücherei Heidelberg, 30. September 2020) Der Schriftsteller und der Übersetzer, der Dichter und der Nachdichter Richard Pietraß hatte seine ersten weiterhin sichtbaren Veröffentlichungen in drei einander folgenden Ausgaben einer von Bernd Jentzsch herausgegebenen Lyrikreihe namens Poesiealbum. 90 Pfennige kosteten die Hefte und sie wurden in einer Auflage von 10.000 Exemplaren nicht nur in Buchhandlungen, sondern sogar an Zeitungskiosken verkauft. Jeden Monat gab es ein neues, eine neue Stimme im Chor der Lyrik. Im Heft Nr. 81 mit Gedichten Marina Zwetajewas erschien im Juni 1974 Pietraß‘ erste Übersetzung aus dem Russischen, im August 1974 in Heft 83 seine Nachdichtung eines Lappland-Poems des norwegischen Dichters Nordahl Grieg und in Heft 82 wurde Richard Pietraß im Juli 1974 mit eigenen Gedichten vorgestellt. Worum es ihm in seiner Poesie geht, steht auf der Innenklappe des Heftes vom Juli 1974: „Das Leben trifft uns, wie uns wahre Kunst betroffen macht. Daraus entstehen Gedichte. Immer gilt es, den Raum des Sagbaren, letztlich Lebbaren, zu erweitern.“ Ein Mittel, den „Raum des Sagbaren […] zu erweitern“, wurde für ihn neben dem eigenen Schreiben von Gedichten auch das Übersetzen und das Nachdichten. Dabei schärfte er mitunter die Aussage der Originale und ließ so die Aktualität eines Gedichts etwa von Boris Sluzki oder Nikolai Sabolozki aufblitzen. In den Poesiealben vom Juni und August 1974, die von Fritz Mierau (Zwetajewa) und Sieglinde Mierau (Grieg) zusammengestellt wurden, ist Pietraß mit jeweils nur einem Gedicht vertreten; die anderen wurden von anderen Dichtern ins Deutsche gebracht, von Heinz Czechowski, Adolf Endler, Elke Erb, Bernd Jentzsch, Rainer Kirsch, Sarah Kirsch und Reiner Kunze. -
