An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of proposed development work. A geophysical survey had previously not determined whether archaeological features were present on the site. The earliest deposits encountered by the excavation were natural clays with iron panning. Seven probable rubbish pits were recorded in the south of the site, all but three containing Late Iron Age/early Romano-British pottery. A possible natural water channel was recorded in the centre of the site which had been filled, probably deliberately, as part of an act of dumping made-ground across the eastern part of the site. One feature which may have been related to structural activity and a possible flint raft for a building, both containing Late Iron Age/early Romano-British material, were recorded in the centre of the site. Two post holes of this date were also recorded. Five ditches were recorded across the site, none of which contained dating material. One cut the made-ground and another cut one of the pits. A probable tree bowl, a pit and a post hole, both medieval in date, were also recorded along with three features containing 19th/20th century material. The above features and deposits were sealed by a layer of topsoil. [Au(adp)]

Fifteen trenches encapsulating 464.68 square metres were machine excavated. All fifteen trenches revealed evidence for buried archaeological remains. This included field ditches and boundaries, pits, post holes, occupation deposits and possible ground beam slots. Pottery recovered from excavated features was mainly of the late Bronze Age to Iron Age date (c.900 to 50 BC). A single ditch had pottery of late Anglo-Saxon or early medieval date. Environmental samples were collected from excavated deposits. The small quantity of animal bone was in a moderate state of preservation, with only cattle and sheep/goat identifiable. Known archaeology in the immediate vicinity indicated the site formed only part of a more extensive, multi-period site, including later Iron Age and early Roman settlement. A summary of the proposed foundation layout was compared to the known depth and extent of archaeology within the site. [Au(adp)]

A single trench was excavated and recorded which revealed evidence for probable Roman street metallings as well as an earlier linear feature most likely a field boundary ditch. Dating evidence for the Roman street was recovered in the form of a substantial portion of Drag.31 central Gaulish dish from c.AD 120 to AD 180. The small streets apparently formed part of a suburb of the Roman town of Canterbury. The presence of a possible ditch which certainly predated the Roman street metallings may have indicated that field systems associated with a transitional Late pre-Roman Iron Age to early- Roman settlement at Westgate Gardens extended across the area. Recent excavations at St. Dunstan's Terrace to the west and Orchard Street to the east have also found parts of a field system which may have been contemporary. [Au(adp)]

The site lay within the walls of the 3rd century Roman town of Canterbury just to the west of the Roman street from Northgate. A previously undertaken watching brief had revealed an undisturbed stratigraphic sequence to the rear of the property and surviving archaeological deposits beneath the floor of the cellar. Three trenches were hand dug revealing a surviving stratigraphic sequence dating from the Roman period onwards. The first trench, to the rear of the property, revealed a sequence of garden soils and pits cut by a Second World War air raid shelter. A complicated sequence of pits and metalled surfaces were

Archaeological Investigations Project 2006 Evaluations South East revealed in trench 2 together with a possible clay floor. The final trench in the cellar provided evidence for an earlier medieval cellar containing a well. Limited excavation within the area of the well showed that very little Roman archaeology had survived the building of the cellar. [Au(adp)]

Archaeological Evaluation Report Champness, C Oxford : Oxford Archaeology, 2007, 38pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Oxford Archaeology This evaluation work formed the second part of a two stage evaluation strategy. The first stage involved the assessment of geotechnical reports and previous archaeological work in the area. The second stage comprised the excavation of 10 shallow trenches across the site. Five deep test pits excavated through the lower alluvial sequence on the site, revealed an area of Late Neolithic/early Bronze Age activity associated with flint knapping and hearth remains near the edge of the gravel terrace sealed at the interface between sane and Holocene peat. Beaker pottery was also recovered. The depth of overlying estuarine sediments across the site suggested that a small open trenched excavation of the localised peat sequence was achievable to the levels at which late Neolithic/early Bronze Age archaeology was identified. Phase 1 Riccoboni, P Ditchling : Archaeology South-East, 2006, 21pp, figs, tabs, refs, CD Work undertaken by: Archaeology South-East An archaeological evaluation was commissioned in advance of the proposed construction of four townhouses and one low cost dwelling. Three trial trenches were excavated to a cumulative length of 50m. Archaeological features were discovered in the southern half of the site (Trench 2). One medieval ditch was recorded and excavated. The original function of this ditch was unknown, but it may have been used as a drainage channel connected to the River Eden. In all of the trenches alluvial deposits were encountered. It was therefore likely that this area was once a wet marsh ground. The trenches showed that there had been substantial importation of materials within the relatively recent past. No archaeological features were observed in the northern half of the site. [Au(abr)]

The project was largely unsuccessful in the identification of structures dated to the Napoleonic period within the redoubt. It became clear that the Twiss maps were a combination of "as built" and "as proposed" and therefore many of the structures depicted may never have been constructed. It was clear however that the main redoubt structure comprising earthen ramparts matched the Twiss maps, with slight alterations. There had been considerable activity on the site in later periods, and this had also been a factor on the removal and obscuring of earlier Napoleonic structures. Later periods of activity were identified within the redoubt from the mid 19th century onwards, when the site became the residence of the camp commandant. The remains of a two-storey building (Redoubt House) and associated formal gardens were identified. It was clear that much of the rampart defence on the southern side had been removed to provide a clear vista from the house across the channel. [Au(abr)]

Along the western edge of the site the remains of the boundary wall of the original Chatham Infantry Barracks built in 1757 was traced. Associated with the wall were the remains of the officer's stable and coach house, grooms' quarters and the walled formal garden of the commanding officer's house. A number of other features dating the military occupation of the site (1755 to present) were found across the evaluation area including terraces cut into the chalk, rubbish pits and trench cut features. The ploughing may have been of Romano-British date. A ditch, probably an internal boundary within a burgage plot, was dated to the 14th century. Boundary ditches at the rear of the burgage plots were found. These had been recut. One may have been deliberately backfilled in the 17th century. Another one may have been earlier, of 14th century date. [Au(abr)]

These artefacts occurred in the subsoil as a result of deep ploughing and comprised worked flint, animal bone and a small quantity of pottery. Evidence for Middle Saxon occupation was found over most of the site, with occupation being densest to the east. This perhaps reflected a difference in land use, and possibly of land ownership. No certain evidence for medieval activity was found apart from a few stray finds. Evidence for post-medieval activity included a large pit and the filling of a possible boundary ditch to St. Mary's Churchyard. [Au(abr)]

The evaluation was carried out by Time Team on the site of Stratton Farm in order to investigate the possibility of Roman activity, in particular the location of a possible temple or ritual site. Roman artefacts had previously been found by metal detection. The work from Time Team comprised further geophysical survey, landscape/earthwork survey and evaluation trenches. A number of Roman features were identified including several pits and a kiln or oven. The most significant result was that the Roman road at this point did not run along Tilburstow Hill Road but was located further west through the centre of the site. No evidence was recovered to support the supposition that there had been a temple or ritual centre on the site. [Au(adp)]

Archaeological Investigations Project 2006 Evaluations South East

An evaluation in advance of residential development recovered some prehistoric worked flints in a tree throw, as well as two probable medieval shallow ditches. These were thought to have formed part of the medieval tenement boundaries, however the absence of domestic refuse suggested that the site was agricultural land at least until the 17th or 18th century. Two burnt tree throws were investigated, however, no archaeological features or finds of archaeological significance were encountered. In conjunction with the archaeological evaluation geoarchaeological investigations, comprised of the excavation of three geoarchaeological test pits within three of the evaluation trenches. Sediments associated with a raised were identified, however, it was not possible to clearly identify this with the Aldingbourne raised beach or the Goodwood-Slindon raised beach. Further investigation involving purposive drilling may have allowed the stratigraphic sequence to be more closely compared with these known raised beach sequences. However, the proposed development would not impact on preservation in situ unless it was to exceed depths of 2.25m below ground level. Whilst no remains of archaeological significance were encountered, the geoarchaeological investigation provided further data for the study of raised and landscape change. [Au(abr)]
