Opening Statement – China

 China is located in the eastern parts of Asia and is the largest country that is entirely situated in Asia.

 China has 23 provinces including the island of Taiwan. Taiwan has its own currency and government.

 Taiwan is officially also called "Republic of China" is seen as a rebel province by China and is not recognised as a sovereign state by the UN.

 Although China is so large, there is only one time zone!

 China is the most populated country in the world as it is home to almost one fifth of the world population.

 The Great Wall of China is 5,500 miles long and stretches across China from the Korean border into the Gobi desert.

 The Chinese government use to limit one child to parents. Since 2016 however Chinese parents are allowed to have two children.

 Chinese New Year is the biggest celebration on the Chinese calendar. 2020 is the Year of the Rat.

 Mandarin Chinese is the official language. In many regions other languages are spoken such as Cantonese, Shanghainese, Hainanese or Mongolian.

 The economy of China is a mixed socialist market economy which is composed of state-owned enterprises and domestic and foreign private businesses.

Task: You need to deliver a very brief opening speech as the UN Delegation from China. You can choose some of the facts above (or use some of your own if you know any!) but try and turn it into a proud speech! So include things like “We are proud to say that…” or “It is our great pleasure to announce that”… or “We would like to tell our fellow UN members that…” Kind of like a formal speech!
