Staying connected with KIFTY has been an extremely important connection during the pandemic KIFTY for me. We have had a number of events throughout the summer and the fall, and this has been a great News way to stay connected with KIFTY during this time at home. In addition to KIFTY-specific events in the spring, there were also many NFTY–PAR events which were a great way to connect with other synagogues and make connections across the NFTY-PAR region. We had a drive-in movie night on October 24 at KI which was very successful. It was the first in-person event for the KIFTY members since March, and it was fantastic to be able to come to KI and see everyone. Overall, the programming for the spring of 2020 was exciting, and I am looking forward to a wonderful start of the 2020–2021 KIFTY year!

KI is known Thanks to Margie Curtis Cohen, we will be resuming around the area as a place that helps the community! our collaboration with the Philadelphia Archdiocese Food Unfortunately, food insecurity is increasing in our Distribution. area, Montgomery, Philadelphia, and Bucks counties. A heartfelt thank you to Rabbi Sussman, Cantor Amy, We have continued, without any breaks, to help our KI Janice, Brian, generous donors, volunteers, and the KI staff members, community guests who contact us, local food for your ongoing support of HaMotzi! pantries, Lowell School, and Cheltenham School District. You can help us in a variety of ways. Delivering meals, groceries and gift cards to KI and community members and assisting in our new HaMotzi Contact Free Drive-Thru Dinners by:

• Restocking our pantry to distribute to those in need. • Cooking meals that we freeze and distribute to 150–175 individuals for our monthly Drive-Thru HaMotzi Dinners. Recipes and containers are provided. • Sponsor a dinner to feed 150 guests for $900.00 (does not include groceries) • Donate to KI’s Sharing is Caring Fund to restock the KI Pantry • Look on the KI website for updates and more information

The Cheltenham School District contacted Cantor Levy and asked KI to augment their lunch distributions. We will now have periodic grocery distributions at KI for the Cheltenham School District families. We have KI members who have “adopted” a Cheltenham School District family by delivering a toaster oven to a family who only had a hot plate to cook on. Another group of KI members is purchasing a gas stove for this family.

22 WINTER 2021 (Archives Continued from P. 28) going back more than 300 to 500 years; no, I am going “sideways” to identify and understand how Laurie and I are related to so many. It takes 215.887.8700 • FAX 215.887.1070 • www.kenesethisrael.org research, not just looking at my 36,000 Ancestry DNA “close matches” or Laurie’s 19,000. Of those, SENIOR STAFF Senior Rabbi, Lance J. Sussman, Ph.D., D.D. about 2,500 are DNA matches to both of us, and [email protected] / 215.887.8702 we are matches to each other. Cantor, Amy E. Levy, M.S.M. An Avotaynu quote from four years ago [email protected] / 215.887.8702 seems much easier for me to believe today: “Since Director of Religious Education, Rabbi Shoshanah Tornberg Ashkenazi Jews had mostly larger families and [email protected] / 215.887.8704 many intermarriages with cousins, the number Executive Director, Brian Rissinger of fifth cousins will be [less than the 20,000 [email protected] / 215.887.8700, ext. 405 expected in the general population.] We estimate Director of Early Childhood Education, Liz Z. Sussman, M.Ed. at least 3,500 fifth cousins for each Ashkenazi [email protected] / 215.885.2425, ext. 419 Jew today. With only this number, the probability Membership Engagement Director, Jaimie Abt Shmelzer [email protected] / 215.887.8700, ext. 401 is that for any two Jews, the chances of NOT Director/Curator, Temple Judea Museum, Rita Rosen Poley having a relationship is close to zero. This also [email protected] / 215.887.8700, ext. 416 means that not only are all Ashkenazim related, Librarian, Meyers Library, Ellen Tilman but they are most likely related in multiple ways.” [email protected] / 215.887.8700, ext. 417 I have been glad to help others begin their Youth Engagement Coordinator, Danielle Carlin exploration, Ellen Tilman, Joe Davidson, and Amy [email protected] / 215.887.8700 Levy among them. Feel free to ask for guidance Choir Director/Pastoral Care, Hazzan David Tilman by leaving a message for me via the KI office.
