This is a timely book, especially for those who have been wondering what has been going on between Israel and the US. The demand was made deliberately, to put Israel between a rock and a hard place, to embarrass the Netanyahu government and to influence the Israeli elections, the very objection he voiced when Netanyahu addressed our Congress when he was running for reelection. He sees this as a matter of Israeli national security and spends a great deal of time parsing how Israel is presented. Do American Jews want Netanyahu to be blackmailed by Obama? Other editions. Ally is the story of that enduring alliance—and of its divides—written from the perspective of a man who treasures his American identity while proudly serving the Jewish State he has come to call home. This volume has the heft and historical perspective one normally only finds in accounts written decades after the events. Instead what is offered is highly nuanced including some of the most sympathetic portrayals of the Obama I have ever encountered. Is this administration going to say that giving the UN greater power and the Palestinians recognition is also the best deal that they can get, and it is better than no deal, as they have been saying about the deal with Iran? At the same time, his detailed writing style left me wondering about the bigger picture. Click to Read More and View Comments. Oren's memoir of his time as Israel's ambassador to the United States--a period of transformative change for America and a time of violent upheaval throughout the Middle East--provides a frank, fascinating look inside the special relationship between America and its closest ally in the region. I too, have noticed inaccuracies in his book. Showing The book is factual, fast moving, and mostly candid I did feel like Oren held back and was searching for "pro-Israel" examples to limit the criticism of him being one-sided. I won't spoil it, but I'm surprised he didn't change the book title while he was at it.
