Nov 06, Eitan Levy rated it it was amazing. On the Israeli domestic side, the Carmel forest fire was a threat to Haifa and was finally controlled, this time with American aid. Seller Inventory U02B Seller Inventory 1-B As Oren relates this proved to be very difficult with a new President who had his own agenda for the Middle East. Too often, he says one thing and does another, he does not support his allies, he betrays his friends and reneges on promises, he exacts retribution for perceived slights; as the adult in the room, he has very thin skin. For the United States, its funding of the Iron Dome weapons system to protect Israel from Hamas rockets was enough support, and it refused to condemn Hamas even when it used human shields to protect its launch sites. It was Israel building a wall that prevented them from worshipping in Jerusalem. I won't spoil it, but I'm surprised he didn't change the book title while he was at it. And a member of the Sioux nation has a right to live on Sioux- nation territory. You can do with it—I would like to request you withdraw it. We hear so much about fake news and fake science these days, but you see it here on steroids. Jul 03, Steven Z. Nov 09, Emma S rated it it was ok. This is a timely book, especially for those who have been wondering what has been going on between Israel and the US. The demand was made deliberately, to put Israel between a rock and a hard place, to embarrass the Netanyahu government and to influence the Israeli elections, the very objection he voiced when Netanyahu addressed our Congress when he was running for reelection. He sees this as a matter of Israeli national security and spends a great deal of time parsing how Israel is presented. Do American Jews want Netanyahu to be blackmailed by Obama? Other editions. Amy Coney Barrett. Those who believe Obama has been a bad friend to Israel will welcome this book. An American by birth and a historian by training, Oren arrived at his diplomatic post just as Benjamin Netanyahu, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton assumed office. For Barack Obama, diplomacy and economic sanctions were effective tools in dealing with the ayatollahs in Teheran. Error rating book. The question is what is smart. Chotiner: Really? Ally is the story of that enduring alliance--and of its divides--written from the perspective of a man who treasures his American identity while proudly serving the Jewish State he has come to call home. Chotiner: Where did you get that right? He is concerned there is an anti-Israel bias that has become so pervasive that even the New York Times, Washington Post, and 60 Minutes seem to be purveyors of an image of Israel that their enemies have created. View all 6 comments. Ally My Journey Across the American-Israeli Divide 1st edition Writer The content was okay, the writing. He has a foot in both worlds and can address this first hand. In spite of these glaring omissions and the feeling of a agenda driven text, I trudged through the book hoping to come out with a better understanding of the Israeli viewpoint on some of the contentious issues but did not find anything new. Oren was criticised by Abe Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League, who said that Oren's theorising "veers into the realm of conspiracy theories There is a lot of jumping back and forth, so that without a strong pre-existing grasp on the main events it can be difficult to keep the order correct. He insists that the Americans have no stomach for war, but do they have a stomach for the ultimate chaos that will ensue when the world spirals out of control, when nuclear weapons proliferate? Oren has written many articles commenting on current political issues. Elsewhere, he protests too much. I watched these planes fly by with my own eyes, dumping water on the still burning woods. Chotiner: Who gave you the right to live anywhere you want in the West Bank? Oren has been a distinguished fellow at the Shalem Center in Jerusalem, a contributing editor to The New Republic, and a visiting professor at Harvard, Yale, and Georgetown. Seller Inventory GI4N The book is full to the brim with detailed story telling, and he does a good job of filling in the less-well-informed reader like me on the backstories. Friend Reviews. Ally is the story of that enduring alliance—and of its divides—written from the perspective of a man who treasures his American identity while proudly serving the Jewish State he has come to call home. This volume has the heft and historical perspective one normally only finds in accounts written decades after the events. Instead what is offered is highly nuanced including some of the most sympathetic portrayals of the Obama I have ever encountered. Is this administration going to say that giving the UN greater power and the Palestinians recognition is also the best deal that they can get, and it is better than no deal, as they have been saying about the deal with Iran? At the same time, his detailed writing style left me wondering about the bigger picture. Click to Read More and View Comments. Oren's memoir of his time as Israel's ambassador to the United States--a period of transformative change for America and a time of violent upheaval throughout the Middle East--provides a frank, fascinating look inside the special relationship between America and its closest ally in the region. I too, have noticed inaccuracies in his book. Showing The book is factual, fast moving, and mostly candid I did feel like Oren held back and was searching for "pro-Israel" examples to limit the criticism of him being one-sided. I won't spoil it, but I'm surprised he didn't change the book title while he was at it. He was upset with a 60 minutes segment in which Bob Simon a Jew documented the plight of Palestinian Christians being barred from worshiping Jerusalem. Jul 01, George Serebrennikov rated it it was amazing Shelves: , jews-israel , usa. After interviewing Oren, Simon interviewed Palestinian Christians, who scoffed at the idea that Muslim extremism was the reason they're fleeing the Holy Land. I would imagine that evaluations of this book will divide upon partisan lines: those approving of Obama and his foreign policy will look to make this personal and denigrate Oren. But, this book is about the author's time as an ambassador and he shows how tough and demanding the job was. Mar 25, Gabriel Perlin rated it really liked it. He offered historical reasons for Americans' strong bond with Israel. Too often, he says one thing and does another, he does not support his allies, he betrays his friends and reneges on promises, he exacts retribution for perceived slights; as the adult in the room, he has very thin skin. And with alarmingly few exceptions, those stories were authored by Jews. Seller Inventory 1-B And Oren's writing is engaging. Book is in Used-Good condition. Welcome back. However I came to read this book, I was clearly duped. Aug 16, Mark Hertling rated it it was amazing. A read through this book should invigorate Israel's enemies on the progressive, anti-Israel left in the U. While studying at Princeton in Oren realized the community of fate that existed between the United States and Israel and the need for a close alliance between the two. Michael Oren served as the Israeli ambassador to the United States from to This book does not do much in terms of explaining why US needs Israel as an ally but is a one-dimensional explanation of Israel's needs. In this regard the US support for Israel since its founding in seems almost as a forgone conclusion. Exact same right. There is a focus on the author's contacts and their titles, which I disliked but perhaps it is simply that I ought to be reading a different book. Throughout his illustrious career as a Middle East scholar, Dr. Ally My Journey Across the American-Israeli Divide 1st edition Reviews An American by birth and a historian by training, Oren arrived at his diplomatic post just as Benjamin Netanyahu, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton assumed office. Jul 03, Steven Z. About Michael B. Oren tells his story of immigrating to Israel, spending time on a kibbutz, in the army, in academia, and finally as the Israeli ambassador to the US during Obama's presidency. The details Oren provides are explicit and argues against the myth that Jews control the American media as even reporters like Thomas Friedman have been inadvertently coopted into this cabal. Oren delivers a final word on the state of the Alliance after the book's initial publication. The timeline is spazzy. Political correctness is alive and well too, maligning those who disagree with their efforts and shutting down any dialogue by labeling it racism or making some other disparaging remark effectively shutting down the very free speech college used to foster, the very atmosphere where ideas used to germinate and grow.

  • Peace Between Israel and the Palestinians Appears to Be As Elusive As Ever. Following the Most Recent Collapse of American-Broke
38 REVIVING THE ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN PEACE PROCESS: HISTORICAL LES- SONS FOR THE MARCH 2015 ISRAELI ELECTIONS Elijah Jatovsky Lessons derived from the successes that led to the signing of the 1993 Declaration of Principles between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization highlight modern criteria by which a debilitated Israeli-Palestinian peace process can be revitalized. Writ- ten in the run-up to the March 2015 Israeli elections, this article examines a scenario for the emergence of a security-credentialed leadership of the Israeli Center-Left. Such leadership did not in fact emerge in this election cycle. However, should this occur in the future, this paper proposes a Plan A, whereby Israel submits a generous two-state deal to the Palestinians based roughly on that of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s offer in 2008. Should Palestinians find this offer unacceptable whether due to reservations on borders, Jerusalem or refugees, this paper proposes a Plan B by which Israel would conduct a staged, unilateral withdrawal from large areas of the West Bank to preserve the viability of a two-state solution. INTRODUCTION Peace between Israel and the Palestinians appears to be as elusive as ever. Following the most recent collapse of American-brokered negotiations in April 2014, Palestinians announced they would revert to pursuing statehood through the United Nations (UN), a move Israel vehemently opposes. A UN Security Council (UNSC) vote on some form of a proposal calling for an end to “Israeli occupation in the West Bank” by 2016 is expected later this month.1 In July 2014, a two-month war between Hamas-controlled Gaza and Israel broke out, claiming the lives of over 2,100 Gazans (this number encompassing both combatants and civilians), 66 Israeli soldiers and seven Israeli civilians—the low number of Israeli civilians credited to Israel’s sophisti- cated anti-missile Iron Dome system.

  • Israel and Overseas: Israeli Election Primer 2015 (As Of, January 27, 2015) Elections • in Israel, Elections for the Knesset A
Israel and Overseas: Israeli Election Primer 2015 (As of, January 27, 2015) Elections In Israel, elections for the Knesset are held at least every four years. As is frequently the case, the outgoing government coalition collapsed due to disagreements between the parties. As a result, the Knesset fell significantly short of seeing out its full four year term. Knesset elections in Israel will now be held on March 17, 2015, slightly over two years since the last time that this occurred. The Basics of the Israeli Electoral System All Israeli citizens above the age of 18 and currently in the country are eligible to vote. Voters simply select one political party. Votes are tallied and each party is then basically awarded the same percentage of Knesset seats as the percentage of votes that it received. So a party that wins 10% of total votes, receives 10% of the seats in the Knesset (In other words, they would win 12, out of a total of 120 seats). To discourage small parties, the law was recently amended and now the votes of any party that does not win at least 3.25% of the total (probably around 130,000 votes) are completely discarded and that party will not receive any seats. (Until recently, the “electoral threshold,” as it is known, was only 2%). For the upcoming elections, by January 29, each party must submit a numbered list of its candidates, which cannot later be altered. So a party that receives 10 seats will send to the Knesset the top 10 people listed on its pre-submitted list.

  • "Groups Fear Public Backlash Over Iran
Forward.com Groups Fear Public Backlash Over Iran Forward Staff | Fri. Feb 02, 2007 While Jewish communal leaders focus most of their current lobbying efforts on pressing the United States to take a tough line against Iran and its nuclear program, some are privately voicing fears that they will be accused of driving America into a war with the regime in Tehran. In early advocacy efforts on the issue, Jewish organizations stressed the threat that a nuclear Iran would pose to Israel in light of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s calls to “wipe Israel off the map.” Now, with concerns mounting that Israel and its supporters might be blamed for any military confrontation, Jewish groups are seeking to widen their argument, asserting that an Iranian nuclear bomb would threaten the West and endanger pro-American Sunni Muslim states in the region. Jess Hordes, Washington director of the Anti-Defamation League, said that the strategy of broadening the case against Iran was not an attempt to divert attention from the threats to Israel. “It is a fact that Iran is a danger to the whole world,” Hordes said. “We are not just saying it to hide our concerns about Israel.” Yet many advocacy efforts, even when not linked to Israel, carry indelibly Jewish fingerprints. Last week, Jewish groups claimed victory when the United Nations approved a resolution denouncing Holocaust denial, with Iran’s regime as the obvious target. Additionally, numerous Jewish activists are pressing in advertisements and Internet appeals for Ahmadinejad to be indicted in The Hague for incitement to genocide. In warning of possible scapegoating, insiders point to the experience of the Iraq War.
