Steers to £1290 Heifers to £1060
A mixed bag of stores on Friday, with plenty excellent runs of well bred and turned out cattle interspersed by several ‘last out of the field’ sorts, but all seeing very decent trade. Top slot of the day went to Gerald & Ann Burrow of Morchard Bishop with a Blue steer with tremendous shape (21m) which rose to £1290 whilst the finest of a cracking run of forward bullocks from Rob Hawkins, Awliscombe topped £1215 for a couple of grand Simmental steers (29m). Other bigger steers included Blondes (25m) to £1170 for Gemma Tooze, Broadsands and Limousins (28m) close behind at £1160 for Geoff & Marie Sharam of Dartmouth, also it was nice to see Plympton’s Bob Allen back in Exeter and selling his best, a Simmental steer (24m) for £1145. Native bred store steers peaked at £1130 for a South Devon (27m) from Frank & Sue Martin, Postbridge with Herefords again from Gerald & Ann Burrow (at just 14m) reaching £1120, other summer 2016 born bullocks to £1080 for a bunch of four Limousins for William Bromell of Chagford. Top store heifers saw £1060 for a smart black Limousin (20m) from AT & RJ Summers of Awliscombe, a price matched by Rob Hawkins with his smashing Charolais female (29m) other close to finishing sorts sold to £1040 for both Blues (24m) and Charolais (28m) for Gerald & Ann Burrow and Chris Lidstone, Kingsbridge respectively. Best of the later born heifers saw a pen of five matching Charolais (13m) to £805 apiece for Courtney & Phillip Heard of Okehampton. A good entry for our monthly sale of organic store cattle included groups of South Devon steers (18m) from Jerry Saunders, Newton Abbot to £870 and £860 and Limousin heifers (21m) at £720 for Dan Partridge of Dunsford.
153 SUCKLED CALVES & STIRKS – 11.30AM Auctioneer: Ian Caunter 07813 068935
A solid entry of both suckled calves and stirks met a firm trade throughout. The Smerdon Family of Ivybridge showed strong Charolais cross steers which topped at £850 whilst another good consignment from David Skelley Jnr of Shaugh Prior saw the best of his steers (10m) attain £790, with others of a similar age reaching £740. Andrew Barker of Dunsford once again showed tremendously well-farmed dairy bred cattle topping at £725 with others to £675 and £640 (11m). Richard Hill also of Dunsford attained £660 for Devon cross steers, whilst younger Charolais cross steers from Michael Reddaway (6m) reached £600. More trade for heifers, as the best from Dave Skelley Jnr topped at £670 with others to £650 and £600 (9m). Steve Francis of South Tawton hit £595 for Limousin cross heifers, Charolais cross heifers from Michael Reddaway (6m) hit £570 with others of a similar age reaching £550, whilst Ross Crang of Combe Martin realised £500 for dairy bred Simmental crosses (6m). A tidy entry of organic stirks topped at £705 twice for Ron Barter of Dunsford showing Limousin and South Devon steers (11m) and (8m) respectively, whilst a run of Hereford cross steers and heifers from Dan Partridge of Dunsford saw the best of the steers hit £590 with his heifers topping at £535.

British Blue bulls to £330 for Taverner Partners Hereford 7 180 156 10 170 137 of Kenford. Aberdeen Angus bulls to £280, £260 Devon 1 170 170 & £230 for Andrew Parker of Totnes. Heifers Aberdeen Angus 12 280 202 10 210 145 topped at £365 for a smart Simmental heifer from Holstein / Friesian Messrs C & EC Mills of Sampford Peverell with 23 180 23 2 110 60 other Simmentals to £300 & £295 for Malcolm & Fleckvieh 2 40 26 Kay Pring of Broadclyst. British Blue heifers to £355 for Paul Hendy, and Charolais heifers to £330 for Martin & Liz Bennett of Broadhembury & £280 for Ian Pincombe of Crediton. Friesians to £180 (x2) & £165 for Messrs GE Ellett & Son of Exmouth, £120 for Stuart Dagworthy of Woodbury and £105 for David & Adrian Cole of Bradninch.

1598 STORE LAMBS
A few less on offer which only helped to maintain the recent high demand, with an entry just shy of 1600 penned averaging £59.60 a life, a little up on last week by 50p per head. A couple of pens of strong Poll Dorset x lambs from Mark Kimber of Merton topped the sale with both to £72, whilst further forward sorts ran to £70.50 for both Stuart Crang, Thorverton (x2) and RWF Huxter of Bridport. Similar money was seen for pens from Andrea Martin, Okehampton and Jonathan Musgrave of Yealmpton both with Charollais x at £69.50, not far behind with pens to £69 was Tony Chadwick, Higher Ashton and Umberleigh’s Dave Webber (with a pair of ram lambs). An excellent run of Suffolk lambs from Lyneham farms, Yealmpton saw the best to £67. Plenty of well summered consignments in that £60 to £66.50 region with many ‘keeping lambs’ in and around the £60 mark. Hill lambs again saw the whole range, selling anywhere from £20 to £60 apiece.
64 GRAZING EWES A few more grazers about on Friday with best sorts to £62 and £61 for well covered types from Alan Boorman of Trusham, lesser sorts reaching £52 for Philip Smith of Luppitt with sheep of high ground to £40 for rams from Richard Winsor, Princetown and £30 for small ewes from Naomi Oakley of Postbridge.

A good October entry of breeders saw the best of a fine run of FM ewes from Rob & Sue Greep, Cornwood to £78 for Suffolk cross, with others of that breed (4T & 6T) and running with a Texel ram, close behind at £74 for RJ & JK Kingdom of Sampford Courtenay. A good show of breeding rams was headed by JT & LE Heard, Okehampton with Suffolk shearlings to £270, also rams of the same breed and age reached £250 for Mike Waycott, Ashburton and S & R Stamp of Highbridge. Texel shearlings saw £245 for John Putt of Tedburn with Suffolk ram lambs selling to £200 (x2) for R Mills of Witheridge.
11 COUPLES (4 EWES & 7 LAMBS)
Just a few couples on offer with aged doubles from the Perring family of Bovey Tracey to £168 and two Mule cross ewes (4T & FM) and three lambs at foot from Ken & Brenda Cole, Loxbeare to £124 an outfit.
245 DAIRY CATTLE – 11.30AM Auctioneer: Mark Davis 07773 371774
A massive entry of 245 Dairy Cattle saw an excellent crowd of buyers around the ring. There are fewer numbers of fresh milk around at the moment and buyers are chasing for milk! Top of the Commercial milk section was £1800 twice for “Hemburyfort Marteebloem 110” by Woodmarsh Gerald from Derek Pyle and a Norwegian Red x heifer from Messrs JJ Palfrey & Co of Dartmouth who sold others to £1700. Other heifers to £1750 for a non-pedigree heifer from Messrs Lawrence & Tapp of Honiton who sold others at £1580 & £1550. Other Norwegian Red & Swedish Red heifers to £1280 & £1200 for Ken & Cathie Cottey of Whimple. In-calf heifers topped at £1300 for a British Friesian from Weavian Farms of Bideford who sold others at £1150 & £1050 twice. The same vendors also sold crossbred dry cows at £1250. A Special Sale of 85 Pedigree Ayrshires saw an excellent trade for the fresh milk! The Bolderston Family travelled a long way down to Exeter from Norfolk with four fresh Pedigree Ayrshire heifers, they were rewarded with an excellent trade topping the day at 1900gns for “Harry’s Gold Primrose” by Cuthill Towers Autumn Gold backed with seven generations of VG & EX dams, she sold to CRJ & JA Christophers of Truro for their Rosehill herd, others from this farm sold at 1400gns & 1380gns. Mervyn, Malcolm & Mark Nicholls sold a consignment of sixty-one heifers from their renowned “Hilltown” herd in South Molton which was led by four super fresh heifers which topped at 1700gns for “Hilltown Snowball 915” by Hilltown Trailblazer with others to 1650gns twice for daughters of Willhome Challenger and Libby’s Lochinvar and another at 1480gns by Hitcham Milk Cheque. In-calf heifers reached 1000gns for “Hilltown Star 569” by Green Lane Marksman. The dispersal of 110 organic in-calf heifers and bulling heifers on behalf of Jon & Sue Kittow of Silverton sold to a better than expected trade with the spring calving heifers topping at £1150 for a smart Blue Roan Shorthorn. Others sold to £1080, £1050 (x2) £1020 & £1000 (x2) with Jersey crosses to £950 on several occasions. Crossbred bulling heifers met limited interest as expected but the best sold to £510.

Rural Reflection October 2017
Well, what happened to the Indian summer we were promised after a washed out August? It looks like the Great British weather had other ideas and we seemed to have jumped into Autumn after what felt like a particularly short summer. As I write this the sun is shining and I am sure many of you are out there today trying to make the most of a rare dry day.
Latest reports suggest the Harvest Results have been mixed for 2017 with some farms not having managed to finish combining due to the wet and untimely weather. In the meantime, hedge-cutting appears to be in full flow since the hedge-cutting window opened on the 1st September.
It has been hive of activity in the professional offices at Kivells throughout September as the deadline for Countryside Stewardship application forms was the 30th September. The team managed to submit 68 applications to Natural England before the deadline (53 Mid-Tier Countryside Stewardship applications and 15 Water Capital grant applications). The expected monetary value to our clients is worth circa £300,000 of capital work which includes hedge laying, fencing, concrete yard renewal, hard bases livestock drinkers and many more. Successful agreements will commence on 1st January 2018. If you would like to find out more about the Countryside Stewardship Scheme please contact your local Kivells office for more information.
The Rural Payments Agency (RPA) have announced the proposal to change the rules for greening for the Basic Payment Scheme 2018 will be taken forward. Those arable and mixed farmers amongst you may need to prick your ears for this part! If you are planning to use leguminous crops for your Ecological Focus Area (EFA) greening element, you may be affected. For example, plant protection products can no longer be used on these areas which applies to crops such as combinable peas or beans planted this Autumn. Other changes include the use of the tree lines for greening and the minimum period for catch crops. Previously tree lines were not classified as a hedge for greening purposes however, in 2018 they can be. Please feel free to speak to someone in the professional team if you’re concerned about your greening element of the Basic Payment Scheme to avoid payment penalties in 2018.
Some of you may have had a payment from the RPA recently which is labelled ‘FDM Reimbursement 2016’. FDM stands for Financial Discipline Mechanism which is a deduction applied to all claims above €2,000 which is put into a reserve fund in case of a farming crisis. If not all of the reserve fund is used in that year, claimants will be reimbursed.
There are currently grant opportunities available under the Rural Development Programme for England in the form of LEADER funding. This funding is to help increase productivity and animal welfare. The amount of funding available will depend on the area in which the farm falls into. For example, the Greater Dartmoor Leader group will fund up 40% of eligible costs with a maximum payment of £100,000. Supported projects include milking robots, enhanced cattle and sheep handling systems, crop robotics, LED lighting in livestock housing etc. There is also funding available for rural business start-ups and farm
diversification. If you would like to check the eligibility of a project you are considering and would like to be guided through the application process, please contact a member of the Kivells team and we will be happy to help.
In other news it has just been announced that there is a Rural Broadband Infrastructure grant available for Local Authorities to apply for. There will be a focus on connecting rural businesses in areas with poor connection speeds. The aim would be achieve speeds of 30Mbps in these rural areas. The RPA need to be contacted in the first instance to request and application pack and handbook and they will assess applications on a case by case basis. This is an evolving topic and it will be a case of ‘watch this space’ until we know which Local Authorities will be eligible to apply.
The Kivells farms and land department have seen a flurry of new instructions this Autumn. Details of farms and land for sale can be found on our website www.kivells.com. There have also been some recent pleasing sales despite the uncertain backdrop of BREXIT. A recent auction near Holsworthy saw 23.42 acres of organic pasture land reaching £200,000 which was well above the guide price. Looking forward, the date has been announced for the Autumn Budget, which will take place on the 22nd November 2017. As this is the first budget to be made in the Autumn, rather than the Spring, we will have to see what the impact on the agricultural industry will be. On a more certain note, the exchange rate for 2017’s BPS payment has been set at €1 = £0.89470. Thankfully this is a slight increase from last year (€1 = £0.85228) which I’m sure will be gratefully received! Payments will be made by the RPA from the 1st December 2017 onwards.
