Young home bred Blue heifers with plenty of shape also ran to 209ppk, plus 208ppk for Phillip Dennis of North Tawton while South Devon heifers (25m) fetched 197ppk for Keith & Hilary Harvey of Bovey Tracey. Charolais heifers (27m) from Roger & John Dennis of Tedburn St Mary saw 192ppk (£1141) also Rob Corkery of Higher Metcombe attained 192ppk (£1164) for a solid looking Limousin steer (22m). OTM prime saw a well-muscled Blonde heifer to 197ppk (£1190) for Derek Arnold of Morchard Road. Barren Cows – Barren cows in tremendous demand with numbers light everywhere, selling to a high of 157ppk (£1117) for Messrs Tucker & Parkhouse of Pennymoor with a Limousin. Murray Grey barreners saw 138ppk (£976) for J Hastie of Wiveliscombe with Blue cows to 129ppk (£894) again for Derek Arnold. Other overweights generally £72-£77 depending on breed and finish. 49-52kg hoggs sold to £80.80 (165ppk) for Rothamsted Research of North Tawton, £77.80 for Mick Branton of Dunsford, £77 for R Cheriton of Whitestone and £76 for Peggy & Phil Keast of North Tawton. 46 and 47kg hoggs also to £76 for Phil Lockyer of Cheriton Bishop and £75.20 for again for Peggy & Phil Keast. 45kgs peaked at £76.50 (170ppk) for Roger & John Dennis of Tedburn St Mary, 44’s to £74 (168ppk) for Derek Harvey of Roborough and £73.50 & £73 (167 & 166ppk) for Darren Reed of Broadwoodkelly. 42kgs to £69.80 (166ppk) for Simon Ashton of Brixham as 41kgs sold to £68.50 (167ppk) for J Hastie of Wiveliscombe and £68 (166ppk) for Alan Bickley. 40kg hoggs to £68.50 (171ppk) for Phil Coaker of Postbridge, £67.20 for Ben Gray of Tedburn St Mary and £67 (both 168ppk) for Chris & Katie Steer of Modbury. Lighter hoggs were headed by a pair of shapely 38kg Beltex’s from the Steer family of Liverton that climbed to £76.50 or a sale topping 201ppk. Another pair of shapely hoggs scaling 37kgs from Phil Coaker realised £69 (186ppk) while a penfull of 39kgs from Alan & Lisa Johns of Slapton sold at £67 (172ppk) and 38kgs from Blackaton Manor Farms of Widecombe made £66.20 (174ppk). More 37kgs at £63 (170ppk) for both Derek Harvey and Tale Valley Farming Partnership of Cullompton. SQQ is within a penny of last week at 165ppk. 637 CULL EWES & 47 RAMS A similar number of cull sheep met a flying trade for the quality on offer with pens of pure Charollais ewes selling to £120 & £113.50 for Bill Quick who also sold crossbred ewes at £108. Pure Texel and Roussin ewes to £118.50 & £100 for Anthony Carter of Dawlish, whilst Suffolk crosses sold to £113 for the Maynard family of Hele, £112 & £107 for pure Suffolks from Mike Waycott of Ashburton and £111 for crossbreds from Adrian & Julie Rich of Halwell. More mainly Suffolk cross ewes to £108.50 & £100 for Edward Hosegood of Zeal Monachorum, £108 for both Rothamsted Research and John & Diane Vooght of Dunsford, £105.50 for Richard Hartnell of Honiton, £103.50 for C & S Partridge of Calverleigh, £102.50 for the Cuming brothers and £100 for West Prawle Farm of East Portlemouth. Heavy and thick Dorset ewes looked the most improved trade, up in the region of £10-£15 on previous weeks topping at £95 for Derek & Judith Galloway, while Mules were up slightly selling into the mid £70’s and to £76.50 for Geoff & Joe Lang of Bishopsteignton. Fewer hill bred ewes forward sold at similar levels and generally in the £40’s, but a greater number of very plain, lambing disaster type ewes will have hampered the averages selling from £11 to £61. Rams topped at £118.50 & £99 for John Simons of South Chard, £118 & £110 for P Bryce of Dunsford, £117.50 for the Maynard family, £115.50 for Bill Quick. Overall average was up £3 to £74.
