The Michael has the prestige of being head of the angels, ’s attending spirits. The word archangel I thank You, my heavenly Father, comes from the Greek word arché (prince) and angelos through Christ, Your dear (messenger). The prophet Daniel wrote ‘Michael, night from all harm and danger; the great prince’ who shall arise at the time of the end and I pray that You would keep (Dan 12, 1). This is a very who is always bidden to fight against God’s enemies; , the me this day also from sin and and ‘the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly every evil, that all my doings and places’ (Eph 6, 12). They fear men more than they fear God, and so they miss out on the great blessing of knowing Jesus and His love. All our sins are like this: we fear something more than we fear God. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Holy Communion is joyfully received here today. At the altar, our Lord Jesus Christ delivers His true body and blood into our mouths. His gift of body and blood, given in, with, and under the bread and wine, bestows tremendous benefits. His body and blood forgives our sins, strengthens our faith, binds us to the Lord, and unites us with each other. In this is life and salvation.

All members of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod have publicly confessed this sacred gift and its blessings, and so are encouraged to commune. Other guests wishing to join our confession and receive this Holy Sacrament are asked to meet with a pastor in the weeks before communing for the first time.

When you have examined yourself according to Christ’s bidding (1 Corinthians 11:28), come to His altar rejoicing, just as Jesus asks, knowing that our Lord meets you here with joy.

Those coming to the altar for a blessing rather than Holy Communion are asked to cross their arms over their chest.

PAGE 14 Dear Savior, at Your gracious invitation I come to Your table to eat and drink Your holy body and blood. Bible Study: A Man Named Martin: The Man, the Moment, the Movement

Theme: As we near the celebration of the Five-Hundredth Anniversary of the Reformation, we will begin a new Bible Study looking at Martin Luther: his biography, the important events in which he played a major part, and the lasting impact he made on both the church’s and even Europe’s cultural landscape. This study is based on Lutheran Hour Ministries’ series A Man Named Martin, featuring a DVD video and guided instruction per session.

Days & Times: Tuesdays at 10:45 A.M. Sundays at 9:00 A.M.

Location: Tuesdays in church overflow room Sundays in church fellowship hall

Book Club: Things Fall Apart

Theme: The Book Club is ready to get its hands on a new book. As always, all are welcome to attend and encouraged to join in the discussion. This time around we’ll be looking at Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. It’s an historical fiction novel by a Nigerian author about life in an African tribe in contrast to the message of the Catholic missionaries who are coming and settling in among them. This is an interesting book not only from an anthropological perspective, but even from a missional standpoint of the benefits of the Gospel and how to (and how not to) share that Gospel with one's neighbors. Here’s a brief description from Amazon:

It is a classic narrative about Africa's cataclysmic encounter with Europe as it establishes a colonial presence on the continent. Told through the fictional experiences of Okonkwo, a wealthy and fearless Igbo warrior of Umuofia in the late 1800s, Things Fall Apart explores one man's futile resistance to the devaluing of his Igbo traditions by British political and religious forces and his despair as his community capitulates to the powerful new order.

With more than 20 million copies sold and translated into fifty-seven languages, Things Fall Apart provides one of the most illuminating and permanent monuments to African experience. Achebe does not only capture life in a pre-colonial African village, he conveys the tragedy of the loss of that world while broadening our understanding of our contemporary realities.

Each member is responsible for securing their own copy to read. We are to have the whole book read and ready to discuss at this next meeting.

Day & Time: Sunday, October 1 from 3:00 – 6:00 P.M.

Location: The Millers

Church Library Theme: We are pleased to announce our new church library. You may search the catalog from home: https//www.librarything.com/catalog/ascenlcmsatl. The library is located downstairs in a back room just past the fellowship hall. It is furnished for the comfort of reading and study. The library is available on Sunday mornings, but please contact Pastor Miller: [email protected] for access during the week. We hope to make it even more inviting, and to PAGE 19

expand our number of titles.

As our library opens, we request two things:

1.) Donations: If you would like to contribute to the library, please bring relevant donations to church. The Library Committee will review them to determine if they will work with our collection. Please label your donation bag with your name so any surplus may be returned to you. Appropriate categories include: biblical commentaries, biblical geography, biblical languages, church art, church history, church fathers, biographies of saints, historical fiction with religious subjects, music, hymnals, and theology.

Currently, we only offer titles for adults and reference/non-circulating books. However, in the future our hope is to incorporate children’s books, audio books, and DVDs of a religious nature, as well as sacred music on CD.

2.) Library Committee Volunteers: We would appreciate your assistance with managing this project and helping with future plans. If you would like to serve in this way, please contact Judy Russell: [email protected] or

Relief for Victims of Hurricane Harvey & Irma

Theme: As LCMS World Relief and Human Care and its LCMS Disaster Response answer the call for two hurricanes, it’s important that the kindness being expressed across the Synod continues in the aftermath of these catastrophes.

LCMS Disaster Response is committed to supporting affected districts and their church communities while also building on their capacity not only in responding to a congregation’s needs, but also in extending Christ’s mercy by providing body-and-soul care to entire communities.

As damage assessments come in from the Florida-Georgia District, and as we continue to support the Texas District, there is much to be done in the weeks, months — even years — ahead.

Several of you have asked how you can help with these efforts. There are several ways to donate or to get even more involved. Find out how at www.lcms.org/diaster-response.

Open Arms Fall Festival Theme: Open Arms Lutheran Child Development Center is LCA’s number one mission effort. It is our opportunity to reach out to the children and their families in our community with the Gospel. One way we can do this is to represent our congregation as we welcome all families attending the annual Fall Festival. Please sign up on the list located in the narthex to serve.

Day & Time: Saturday, October 21 from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Open Arms Coffee Mornings

Theme: The opportunity to love and serve our neighbor is as close as our own doorstep. Every day, we have families walk through this building, who are just waiting to be touched by God’s people. One way we can show our Christian love and reach out with the warmth of Jesus is to give them a pick-me-up on their way to work. We are asking for volunteers to serve parents a cup of coffee after dropping off their little ones. It is just once a month, and we ask that you would consider signing up to be the face of Ascension for one of those months on the signup sheet in the narthex.

Day & Time: First Wednesday of every month from 7:30 – 8:30 AM, beginning November 1

Locations: On church property

Stepping Stone Mission Project Theme: From now through the month of November, the members of the Lutheran Church of the Ascension will be teaming up with Stepping Stone, a mission to aid the homeless in Atlanta. We will be collecting clothing and toiletry items for the needy, which may be dropped off in the grey barrel in the narthex. The hope is to have a stock in time for Thanksgiving Day. New and used items to be collected are as follows:

o Underwear and socks (new only, please) o Shoes and boots o Pants o Shirts o Sweatshirts and sweaters o Coats and jackets o Hats o Gloves and mittens o Blankets o Sleeping bags o Travel size toiletries o Plastic Ziploc bags Support for LCA Music Program Theme: Have you enjoyed the music at Lutheran Church of the Ascension? We are so grateful for our Music Director, Debbie, as well as the gifts of our talented musicians. Please consider supporting them and ensuring the quality music here for time to come by making a special donation to the music program. You may make your gift out to the general music fund, or give in memory of Irma Collins, Mary Ann Nuckols, Tamara Albrecht, or Dan Buehl, all of whose memorial monies are set aside for special music.
