Music by KURT WEILL Book and lyrics by BERTOLT BRECHT English Adaptation by MARC BLITZSTEIN

StEDWARDS.-.. UNNERSilY AUSTIN•TEXAS DIRECTOR'S NOTE THE THREEPENNY OPERA is Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill's most famous collaborative effort. It is, in many ways, an unusual musical - piece. Originally written in 1928 in post World War I Germany, Weill .a.. and Brecht freely adapted John Gay's 18th century English Opera, "The StEDWARDS UNIVERSITY Beggar's Opera", to speak to their war weary, defeated, and AUS T IN• T EXAS economically depressed German audience. The original production in Berlin was a huge success with over 10,000 performances throughout Germany during the following five years. The Nazis banned the play in St. Edward's University 1933, upon coming to power. Brecht barely escaped the Nazis in several moves to Switzerland, Russia, and finally, the United States. He always sympathized with the a tradition of academic excellence little guy and never seemed to be content anywhere he lived. He re turned to East Germany after World War II where he developed one of the world's pre-eminent theatres, the Berliner Ensemble. He is now regarded as one of the leading playwrights of the century, writing such + day and evening programs + over 30 majors modern classics as MOTHER COURAGE, GALILEO, THE CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE, and THE GOOD WOMAN OF SETZUAN. Of his situa + small classes tion in Communist East Germany he is said to have uttered: "I escaped the claws of the tiger to only be eaten alive by bedbugs." He never gave up his Austrian passport and kept his money in the West. In tonight's production we have made several choices that could be considered risky, but are intended to give one cause to think.
