Martin was shot by a neighborhood watch captain, George Zimmerman. The night of the fatal shooting, Zimmerman called 911 reporting Martin as a suspicious being. Ignoring the dispatcher’s orders to stay in his vehicle, Zimmerman exited his vehicle and an altercation and gunshots occurred. In the police report Zimmerman had injuries that were said to be “marginally consistent with a life-threatening episode, as described by him”, such as an open wound to the head, broken nose and other injuries. On the phone call Zimmerman used racial slurs and racially profiled Martin. Zimmerman’s family later went on to sue NBC for “editing the tape to make it seem like their son was racist.” News later came out that Martin was unarmed and Zimmerman never stated that he was with the neighborhood watch group. Martin’s girlfriend came out to say that they were on the phone at the time and she heard Martin ask why Zimmerman was following him and she also heard Martin call for help before gunshots were heard. Trayvon Martin’s parents started a petition to get George Zimmerman arrested, which was signed over 1.3 million times. As the case progressed Barack Obama spoke out and said that this incident required “national soul-searching”, also the New Black Panther Party set out a $10,000 reward for the capture of Zimmerman. Zimmerman was said to have low economic standings and had a reasonable bond set, but it later came out that he and his wife lied about their finances and Zimmerman was told to turn himself in within 48 hours. Zimmerman’s attorneys decided this was going to be tried as a self-defense case. The jury was an all-woman jury and was kept anonymous throughout the whole trial. George Zimmerman was found not guilty and this ruling rocked the nation. Many said that, that case was to show just how much of a racial democracy there really is in the country. Critics say that because Martin was an African American teen, that his character was called into question regularly in the trial, some even named it “The Trial of Trayvon Martin.” Some people even say that since he was wearing “dark clothing” it made him suspicious, which people saying that any other college proved that point wrong or teen student could wear the same thing and not get shot. The most brought up point in public was that since Trayvon Martin was an African American in a primarily white neighborhood, the race cards were stacked against him. Since then, there has been incident after incident of black lives being taken and not getting the proper trial or justification they deserve.Take the shooting of Brown, for instance. Brown was shot twelve times by Officer Darren Wilson, he was unarmed and was said to have put his hands up once he was shot to show he was unarmed and surrendering. Wilson’s actions were justified as self-defense. Although there have been cases where the suspects get what they deserve concerning a trial and punishment. For example, the shooting in Charleston, South Carolina at a historic black church where Dylann Roof opened fire at the church during a prayer meeting killing nine people, including the pastor. The crime was labeled a hate crime and Roof was tried for nine counts of murder and the possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. Police brutality has been a rising issue within the movement, including the death of Freddie Gray, who sustained a spinal cord injury while in police custody. The medical examiner report declared it a homicide, after the investigation showed the injury was sustained by an outside force, and the six officers involved were charged but they were later found not guilty or the charges were dropped. The protests that followed were violent and quickly grew out of hand when the protestors threw rocks and started fires. Many controversies concerning whether police officers should have to wear body cams and other video surveillance on them during their patrols. Many people say that we should trust the ones who serve and others say past events have created distrust. Could having a camera on the officer’s outfit save lives, and also prove as an advantage in solving the mysteries in some cases? If police officers have a hidden camera would that make them be more cautious? There have also been other concerns, such as tampering with the video, privacy invasion, officers not turning them on, and which videos should or should not be made public.A huge argument is if an officer has a body cam on and gets a call to a domestic dispute, enabling the recording of the call would invade the privacy of the victim, but to prohibit the recording would prohibit footage of a huge portion of officer- involved shootings. It seems although there is a division on the notion and it’s not a mandated requirement, it could become one soon. In the past year, #BlackLivesMatter has gained momentum like crazy. Celebrities such as Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Kayne West, Chrissy Teigen and John Legend recently voiced their support for the movement. At her concert in Glasgow, Beyoncé stopped to have a moment of silence to remember those lost to police brutality. A giant screen displayed some of the names of the lives that were lost, including Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, who were both shot by police that week. There has been another social movement, #AllLivesMatter. Yes, all lives do matter, every race and gender, everyone has worth. But take the analogy that you broke your arm and you go to the doctor, and he says “all bones matter.” Yes but let’s take care of the one that’s broken. See “Black Lives Matter” is trying to highlight that there is demonstrable evidence that black lives matter less than white lives to the criminal justice system. I am in no way saying that the killings of police officers like in Dallas was okay or should continue, I am, however, for stopping injustice and unjustifiable murders across the board. Some protest that the Black Lives Matter group has become violent and out of control, and it shouldn’t have been that way. But I’m talking about the meaning behind the movement as a whole, and the sociocultural divisions that are set forth in this society. It has been proven repeatedly that blacks are treated differently in the judicial system, from being prosecuted and their punishment. A black man that committed a crime is more likely to get a longer sentence than a white man who committed the same crime. Also a black teen is more likely to be tried as an adult than a white teen who committed the same crime. While this is not the case in all trials, it has been proven that it has been accounted for in some cases and their outcomes. In the end it will take time for the country to live without racial divisions but hopefully we can work towards that goal together as a country. Whether one agrees with what I said or not, it’s up to them. But I do hope it may have opened their eyes and maybe have a better understanding. The Other Candidates Your only rational choice this November. By EMMA RUSHWORTH Election Day is November 8th this year, and each party has one candidate racing towards the finish line.
