Learning Centre

Introduction

Winchester welcomes thousands of children and students on educational visits each year to explore themes across the curriculum. Our Director of Learning and Learning Officer, with the support of experienced volunteers, never take a one-size-fits-all approach to visits.

The next few pages lists the tours and workshops that we offer for classes.

Religious Studies

All ages Tours: Cathedral – a House of God. Workshops: Christianity through Art, Writing Prayer or Poetry, Understanding , The Winchester Bible - Holy Book and work of sacred art. Roleplay: To be a Pilgrim. A Monk’s Life. Special Tour: The Cathedral as a place of worship. Pilgrimage and prayer. Discussion Groups: As required on a range of faith-based topics from KS1 to ‘A’ – Level.

Anglo Saxons “We are just about to start Anglo-Saxons, this is perfect!”- Teacher from Donhead Prep.

Age: KS2 Cathedral Tour: Searching for the Anglo Saxons/King Alfred. Workshop: Anglo-Saxon art and culture - Illumination, Jewellery, Runes and Language Queen Emma – Peaceweaver and Kingmaker (late Anglo Saxon). City Museum: We work in partnership with the City Museum who can provide a one hour activity with Saxon pot-handling and a chance to explore their Saxon gallery.

Age: 14+ including ‘A’- Level Cathedral Tour: The Anglo Saxon Connection. Winchester Tour: Cathedral’s Outer Close and beyond. Workshop: Exploring Anglo Saxon language. Lecture: King Alfred in Winchester.

Age: KS 1 – 3 Local study.

The Development of Church State and Society in Medieval Britain 1066 – 1509

Age: KS3 Cathedral Tour: The Medieval Cathedral. Role play Workshop: To be a Pilgrim or A Monk’s Life. Workshops: Medieval Floor Tiles, The Mysterious Death of William II.

Age: 14+ including ‘A’–Level Cathedral Tour: Prayer, Purgatory and Pilgrimage. Role play Workshop: The Benedictine Priory of St .

Age: KS 1 – 3 Local study.

Age: KS3 and Counter Reformation Cathedral Tour: The Crown & the Church. Workshops: Stained Glass Workshop – Catherine of Aragon.

Age: 14+ including ‘A’–Level Tudors and the Reformation Cathedral Tour: The Cathedral in Turbulent Times. Workshop: Reformation in Winchester – Saxon, Tudor and now.

Age: KS 1 – 3 Local study.

Age: KS3 Cathedral Tour: Soldiers, Windows and Royals. Workshop: The Great West Window.

Age: 14+ including ‘A -Level Cathedral Tour: Destruction and Restoration.

Age: KS 1 – 3 Local study.

Ideas, Political Power, Industry and Empire: Britain 1745 – 1901

Age: KS3 Cathedral Tour: The Victorians in the Cathedral.

Age: 14+ Cathedral Tour: The Victorian Legacy – Restoration and War Memorials.

Age: KS 1 – 3 Local study.

First World War

Age: KS1 – 5 Cathedral Tour: Winchester Cathedral & the First World War. Workshops: Persuasion. Explores topics such as why did so many men volunteer to fight? What about the boy soldiers who lied about their age to join up? Poetry and Painting. How news about the Front manifested itself in poetry and painting. Poppies. How, why and who we remember. We will explore the questions: Where was God? What was the role of the Church in general and the Cathedral in particular? What about conscientious objectors?

Age: KS1 - 5 Workshops: Poetry, Prayer or Prose - Using the Cathedral for inspiration.

Maths

Age: KS3 Cathedral tour: Sacred Shapes and Numbers. Workshops: Sacred Shape Challenge, Press prints.

Age: KS2 Cathedral tour: Carved in Stone & Wood Workshops: Marvellous Materials, Flooding and the Cathedral, and Medieval Medicine.
